I'm posting a quick summary of the Committee meeting, followed by the complete text of Esther's BackPacked with Care flyer.
The Committee met for the first time on August 8, 2012. Carol Lopez, Bill Meine, Will Doerlich, and John Mills represented the Parks and Community Services Commission. Esther Lucas, Nicole Blazin, Pat Edwards, and Kim Giuliano represented staff. Seven residents including me attended the meeting.
The Committee came up with a list of the top five goals for an Independence Day event and then broke into subcommittees. Two of us, including me, are on the Research Subcommittee to find out what other cities are doing for their Independence Day events. Three other residents are on the Events Subcommittee to come up with ideas for how to celebrate Independence Day.
I'm posting Esther's flyer below. "Us" means her, Nicole Blazin, and Gary Lucas.
**************** BACKPACKED WITH CARE ****************
BackPacked With Care is a special project created by Esther and Gary Lucas and Nicole Blazin. The three of us recently learned that 170 elementary kids in San Ramon qualified for the subsidized school lunch program. To qualify for this program a family of 4 must earn less than $41,000 per year. While many residents in San Ramon are blessed with nice homes and good incomes, there are many who are struggling to make ends meet. Back to school time can be very expensive for growing children, causing more financial stress on already strained families. Our goal is to provide as many backpacks filled with much needed school supplies for these children as is possible.
HOW TO DONATE
Listed below are the supplies needed for an average elementary school child here in San Ramon. If you wish to donate you can bring any of the supplies listed below either individually (i.e. boxes of pencils, crayons, etc), an individual backpack with the supplies for a child or a gift card or small cash donation. Esther, Gary and Nicole have personally challenged themselves to 10 backpacks each this year, with your support we can do a lot more! So shop till you drop and help us supply local kids with what they need to to be successful in school this year!
