Ben Affleck cast as new Batman... Weirdly enough, not as a joke

Uploaded: Aug 23, 2013
The nerd world is abuzz with news of the casting of Batman in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel. Christian Bale -- for reasons I speculate involve the chafing of leather suits and constant laryngitis from the "I'm Batman" voice -- has decided to give up his mantle as the cloaked, DC superhero. In what is being affectionately called "Batman vs. Superman," the gloomy billionaire Bruce Wayne will be played by Ben Affleck.

Let's review Ben Affleck's film history. Acclaimed writer and director, Oscar nominee and winner for Best Screenplay with co-writer Matt Damon for "Good Will Hunting," brilliant portrayal of the fallen angel Bartleby in Kevin Smith's "Dogma," and the recent "Argo" blew people away.

Now let's review his history with superhero movies.

"Daredevil." A movie that has gone down in film history as one of the worst superhero movies ever made. A movie that Marvel has been energetically trying to scrub out of people's minds ever since it hit theaters.

I think to sum up the opinion of the general populous on this subject, I will refer to my good friend and renowned expert on negativity, Grumpy Cat.

I think that you're exaggerating quite a bit and being much too harsh. Although for some reason there does seem to be a segment of the population that thinks that Daredevil was an unmitigated disaster, it was actually not a bad movie - not the most memorable superhero movie ever and not in the league of the most recent Batman movies, but far from the worst either. Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper both gave the film positive reviews. (Ebert: 3 stars out of 4).

That said, I don't think that Affleck is the best choice to play Batman, either, and it's going to be impossible for him to live up to the standard recently established by Christian Bale's outstanding portrayal of Batman.

This was one of the funniest postings yet. I'm rolling on the floor in laughter.

It's also funny to me how Pleasanton's self-professed moral residents are obsessed with a 1-1/2 man vigilante crew. Yes, please, let's continue to glamorize vigilantism because, after all, our children need to grow up in a media-constructed culture where inflicting one's sense of justice outside of the judicial-legal system is a very commendable thing.

Hey, who knows, maybe Cody was imitating all the action heroes he's been exposed to over the years -- you know, in which the heroes careen neighborhood streets, speeding, violating all manner of traffic laws. Our heroes. Question of the day: Who do YOU like best for the Batman role? Bale or Afflect?

I think Ben Affleck is a great actor, but personally, I prefer Christian Bale as Batman.
