Tom Cushing emailed me yesterday, "Now, I either have to write my year-end poem, or just wish everybody a good weekend. ;-)"
That reminded me that I wrote a couple of songs many, many years ago (at least 30 or more) about Christmas and New Year's. So I thought I would take the easy way out and just add them to my blog as "poems."
Of course song verses are for the most part not real poetry, but most people don't know the difference. Verse has to do with rhythm and meter and fitting a tune. Poetry, good poetry, has to do with creating verbal imagery.
So here are my lyrics to "Christmas Wish" and "Happy New Year, Anyway." I don't have the music handy, but if I find it I'll post it as images.
Christmas Wish
Let there be peace on Earth
And goodwill towards men,
How often have these words been spoken?
Yet so many, many ways
On so many, many days
Has the meaning of this phrase
Been broken.
Let there be peace on Earth
And goodwill towards men
Will, I hope, someday comes true.
So if I could have one wish
Then I'd make this the Christmas
Present that I give to you.
Happy New Year, Anyway
Now another year has passed
Time is moving much too fast
Seems like we just had the last
"Happy New Year, Anyway."
Guy Lombardo's Auld Lang Sine
Drink a toast with last year's wine
Hope the new year turns out fine.
"Happy New Year, Anyway."
Time Square, no care
Singing in the street
Snowflakes, day breaks,
Oh, my aching feet!
Well another year has gone,
But a lot of stuff went wrong
So I'll finish up my song with
"Happy New Year, Anyway."
