To Cholo or not to Cholo?

Uploaded: Jun 22, 2015

Yes that is the question. I'm sticking my neck out to post this because Cholo seems to be a polarizing character on the Pleasanton Weekly and Danville/San Ramon Express. By discussing this in my blog, I'm hoping to solve the problem and not make it worse.

One of my regular readers emailed me that they won't comment on a recent blog because of Cholo. I was surprised by this hostility to Cholo. Most of what I've read by Cholo is playful or silly, but not objectionable, or at least not objectionable to me.

I don't mind Cholo's comments and I like most of the links he posts. I used to think Cholo was a "she," but based on some recent comments about the Basque, I now believe Cholo is a he. I've known for a while that Cholo is Jewish. Maybe that's why Cholo and I get along.

Some of Cholo's posts are silly but not harmful. I have not seen Cholo attack bloggers or commenters, or at least not in a mean way. So I don't know what this anti-Cholo business is about.

I've had much worse comments on my blogs. I'm not going to repeat any of them because I don't want to stir up the trolls, but a few months ago I had to lock the comments on my blogs just to shake off a troll. In my opinion Cholo is not a troll.

So I don't want to chase Cholo away, but I don't want Cholo chasing my regular readers and fans away either. If you are pro-Cholo (and that includes you too, Cholo) post your reasons why in the comment section. And Cholo I'm trying to defend you here, so be nice and don't make it more difficult by attacking anyone in your comments. I will edit or suppress any negative comments.

If you are anti-Cholo email me at rrogoff@embarcaderopublishing.com and I will print whatever is printable from your comments anonymously. Maybe if Cholo tones down some of what you are objecting to, he can be welcomed back.

Roz- your blog and the other blogs seem to be the only other place where we can read Cholo's posts. Please, do not take our most loved Cholo away from us.

I'm not sure if these replies are from Cholo or one of his supporters, but I had to suppress one because of attacks against other posters using their initials. Some were easy to guess and I do not support personal attacks.

Roz,

On your last "Rand" blog "Cholo" and "Cholo-related" usernames made up 80% of the comments. On Toms' blog its about the same.

I'll just say it's my personal preference to not read any of "Cholos'" posts.

On a side note, I've noticed that hits to all the bloggers posts have seemed to come way down starting around April, and spammers posts have gone way up. Do you have any idea why that is?

Dan,

I don't know. It might be because other posters don't want to post along with Cholo. That's why I wrote this blog, to see if Cholo would play fair and not chase other posters away.

I was also getting Spam posts on my blogs about the Essay Contest. I think those were automatically generated to send that link to the Essay Writing website. I had to delete the links, but I left the rest of the message.

Roz -- everybody's total blog views numbers fell at once and have stayed down, which suggests to me that our publisher changed its method of counting them.

There Have been fewer trolls around lately, as well. Some folks just seem to enjoy a hot flamewar, and check back in frequently to monitor 'progress.'

Tom,

I wonder if the author's clicks are not counted now. I used to rack up a bunch of hits when I was editing my blogs. Those probably should not be counted.

As long as Cholo stays off drugs his/her comments are welcome. Roz you are a good storyteller. Not much to argue or comment about. You are one of the few writers that will translate foreign phrases and spells out the meaning of abbreviations and acronyms the first time you use them. This is a common courtesy that not many writers pay attention to anymore. Tom ? really hard to argue with a lawyer :-).

Bill,

Thanks for the complement. I worked for many years as a Technical Writer and I'm still teaching classes online for University of Phoenix. I hate vagueness. So that's why my writing style tends to be very specific.

I've been doing my best when it comes to posting. I can't imagine others not wanting to add comments. It seems to me that lots of folks enjoy tuning in on what I have to say. Unless I'm wrong?

906 and 606 for yourself and Tom aren't bad at all! Congrats!

hmmmmmmm...seems like scapegoating is going on and it ain't because of moi!

Fan Mail?

I don't know where you can send fan mail to Cholo. If you find out let us all know. But you can click on E-Mail Roz Rogoff under my name at the top of this blog to send me fan mail. My e-mail address is also in the blog.

Marm, you caught me. I'm not a good speller but I usually look up words I'm not sure of. Oops I ended that sentence with a preposition. It should have been "of which I am not sure."

Churchill supposedly had the best response I've seen on that preposition thing: "Madam, that is just the kind of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put!"

I enjoy reading the topical discussions which generate the largest number of responses from your readers. The ones with low or no comments though interesting for the most part are not nearly as entertaining to read. I encourage the bloggers here to be more selective in subject matter. It's really the combination of a relevant and close to home subject and reader comments that make your articles a success.

I think Cholo is hilarious. Comments are short and very obtuse. I read them twice to make sure I'm getting the full meaning and chuckle both times.

VIVA CHOLO! VIVA!
