Many years ago when I lived in Culver City, I was driving back from Orange County and the moon was huge. It was sitting almost on the horizon and was so big it was distracting. It looked mysterious like something out of a science fiction movie. It seemed to be following me home.
When I got home the moon was still there and even bigger. It was spooky. I had never seen a moon like that. I went into the house and hoped it would be back to normal the next day.
I don't recall if there was anything on the news explaining why the moon looked so big. The Internet barely existed back then, so there was no way to look it up. But now the news is telling us there will be a super moon this weekend.
Well last night I went outside at 7 pm to watch the super moon again. I looked in the sky and there were clouds over the moon. They came and went and came back again, so I couldn't always see the moon. But it didn't look that big at all.
A neighbor walking his two Scotties to the dog park asked why I was sitting there. I told him there was going to be an eclipse of the moon. He asked what time and I said between 7 pm and 9 pm. He said he would try to see it too. I waited a little longer and went back into the house to check the time. Then I realized it wasn't on Friday night, it was going to be on Sunday night.
I have been getting very confused lately about time and events and things in general. I couldn't remember how to use my charge card at the Nob Hill Market yesterday, and I left my cane there and had to go back to get it.
I'll be 73 in October. I'm not aging well, which is why I will be looking at some Senior Independent Living places soon. I might need to move to one in a year or two.
The moon thing made me recall that amazing moon I saw driving back from Orange County 30 years ago. The newscasters reported that the last super moon was 30 years ago. So that's what that giant moon was.
The one scheduled for tomorrow night will not only be a super moon, meaning it will be at its closest point in its orbit to Earth, which makes it look very large, but there will also be a total eclipse of the moon.
There was an eclipse earlier this year around midnight. I went out to look at that one too. That's when the moon turned read from the shadow of the Earth over it. So there will be both a super moon and an eclipse on Sunday night. I plan to watch, and this time be there at the right time. How about you?
