Oh You Crazy Moon

Uploaded: Sep 26, 2015

Many years ago when I lived in Culver City, I was driving back from Orange County and the moon was huge. It was sitting almost on the horizon and was so big it was distracting. It looked mysterious like something out of a science fiction movie. It seemed to be following me home.

When I got home the moon was still there and even bigger. It was spooky. I had never seen a moon like that. I went into the house and hoped it would be back to normal the next day.

I don't recall if there was anything on the news explaining why the moon looked so big. The Internet barely existed back then, so there was no way to look it up. But now the news is telling us there will be a super moon this weekend.

Well last night I went outside at 7 pm to watch the super moon again. I looked in the sky and there were clouds over the moon. They came and went and came back again, so I couldn't always see the moon. But it didn't look that big at all.

A neighbor walking his two Scotties to the dog park asked why I was sitting there. I told him there was going to be an eclipse of the moon. He asked what time and I said between 7 pm and 9 pm. He said he would try to see it too. I waited a little longer and went back into the house to check the time. Then I realized it wasn't on Friday night, it was going to be on Sunday night.

I have been getting very confused lately about time and events and things in general. I couldn't remember how to use my charge card at the Nob Hill Market yesterday, and I left my cane there and had to go back to get it.

I'll be 73 in October. I'm not aging well, which is why I will be looking at some Senior Independent Living places soon. I might need to move to one in a year or two.

The moon thing made me recall that amazing moon I saw driving back from Orange County 30 years ago. The newscasters reported that the last super moon was 30 years ago. So that's what that giant moon was.

The one scheduled for tomorrow night will not only be a super moon, meaning it will be at its closest point in its orbit to Earth, which makes it look very large, but there will also be a total eclipse of the moon.

There was an eclipse earlier this year around midnight. I went out to look at that one too. That's when the moon turned read from the shadow of the Earth over it. So there will be both a super moon and an eclipse on Sunday night. I plan to watch, and this time be there at the right time. How about you?

I'll try to remember to watch the moon...maybe? I'm in the computer room and I can hear a few girls singing in their usual squeaky voices...out of tune! They seem to be enjoying themselves...very funny!

I'm already 73 and yup, it's not uncommon to forget things. It seems to me that most of it is useless information.
I loose things like keys, glasses, bills, but never food, water, soft drinks, tea, silverware, newspapers, or books. However, I have gotten lost in San Francisco and Berkeley! That what happens as we age. I enjoy exploring so when I get lost, it's because I'm checking out places that I only rarely visit. I'll admit that I've gotten lost on my way to the J in SF. I also remember jumping into the pool and when I was asked my name by a few ole timers and drew a blank. I don't care, I've been known to just make up a name.

I enjoy election years. I haven't attended any political meetings yet...too early. I don't like Trump, Fiorina, or Carson. They seem mean, judgmental, and too caught with themselves.

The Pope is preparing his last words. I appreciate that he met with prisoners. I don't know about you, but I had no idea that John Bainer was such a crybaby. Maybe he has a depressive core?

yup...you can count on becoming forgetful as you age...it's not a crime. I sure enjoy being alive!

Cholo,

It was warmer and nicer Friday night for the super moon than tonight. Too bad it wasn't on Friday.

There's also more cloud cover today, so that might ruin the whole thing. I will go out at 7 pm and see what I can see of it.

Here's a link to Hoagy Carmichael singing "Ole Buttermilk Sky."

It is followed by Per-Olav Kindgren playing the most beautiful arrangement of "Georgia on My Mind" on a Martin guitar. No vocal needed. Those Martin's are the Stradivarius of guitars.

Cholo,

John Boehner is tender-hearted and red faced. He does cry easily and cannot work with the hard-hearted crop of RINOs, Republicans in Name Only, who are destroying the Republican Party. He's earned his retirement, but I'm sorry to see him go.

Big moon or big disappointment

Well I went outside at quarter to 8 to see the super moon, but I couldn't find it. I walked down the street to see if I could see it and some people coming back from the Dog Park showed me where to look. I looked and saw a slightly larger moon than I saw on Friday, but I wasn't impressed. It wasn't as big as the one I remember from 30 years ago, but back then I lived in Southern California. So that might have made a difference.

I wanted to see the eclipse, but the moon kept disappearing behind the clouds. I caught a glimpse of it turning red, but it wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped. The eclipse a few months ago was much better, even though the moon was very high in the sky and I had to crick my neck to see it.

I remember a supermoon closer to Christmas maybe 10 years ago? I know it was not 30 years ago. I went for a walk at night up the trail to Del Valle in Livermore, the side by Wente's. It was cold and fun and yes the moon seemed bigger then. I completely missed this blog and this big moon event.

There is a movie called "Melancholia" about a planet approaching the earth. Lots of shots in the movie show the moon and planet both in the sky. After seeing the movie, I never have looked at the moon in quite the same way.

Thanks for the link, Cholo. Those Bonobos look like hairy children and behave just as silly.
