Bernie's latest promise

Uploaded: Oct 24, 2015

I wrote a blog a few months ago about supporting Bernie Sanders. I like him, up to a point, but he's been making promises he can't keep now. He's built up a big following among the 18 to 20 something voters by, among other things, promising Free College.

As a guest on Jimmy Kimmel's show recently, Bernie compared the need for a College Degree to a High School Diploma 50 years ago. Fifty years ago a High School Diploma was enough to get a good job, but now employers want a College Degree. So college should be free now like High School was 50 years ago.

Employers require a College Degree for two reasons – to screen out applicants by cutting down the pile of applications, and to find someone who is able to perform at least at a HS level. An AA Degree from a Community College is like a High School Diploma now.

I graduated High School 65 years ago. A High School diploma 50+ years ago demonstrated a High School education. Now, and I know this from my experience teaching online for University of Phoenix, a High School diploma from some school districts barely demonstrates an Elementary School education.

When my mother attended public school in the 1920's, High School wasn't required. An 8th Grade education was enough for most jobs. My paternal Grandmother was an elementary school teacher. She attended what was called "Normal School," which was a three year college program for teachers.

For many years the only jobs for educated women were teaching at Public Schools, which is probably why schools were so much better up through the 1960's. Once women had access to other professions, Doctors, Lawyers, and Indian Chiefs, Public Schools had to make due with whoever couldn't get a better job.

I know I'll get reamed for saying that and it isn't entirely true. There are some great teachers who love the profession and choose to be teachers. But women have many more career opportunities to choose from now, which wasn't available 50 years ago.

So back to Bernie and his free college. State Universities already have low tuition for residents of the state. Most states have very good public Universities, especially California. They are not free but there are student loans, grants, and other assistance for residents who cannot afford tuition. Also students can live at home and commute to college and not have to pay dorm fees or for food service.

Public colleges in most states already provide many students the opportunity for a low cost college degree. I'm for low or no-interest college loans and longer terms to repay them, but promising free college at a national level is not something Bernie or anyone else running for President can deliver.
Community.
What is it worth to you?

Hopefully, Bernie will be interviewed and asked to explain how college students
might receive a free college education.

He may have a reasonable answer. I still appreciate Bernie. I'm also delighted that Hilary is done with the Congressional Nazi's. what a farce...

Hilary is not my ideal candidate but I would certainly vote for her over any Republican. As for the RACIST NAZI Trump, what a sorry excuse for a human being.

He's right when he states that there is no Republican party today...they've gone off the deep end...I agree!

Cholo,

The Republican Party has been dead for years. It has been taken over by the Independent American Party Web Link which is where the Tea Party folks belong, but the idiotic Media needs to categorize what they cannot comprehend so the Press declared the TP-ers to be Republicans.

You may recall that the Mainstream Republicans like Lindsay Graham insisted they were not. Now the real Republicans are called RINOs by these new non-Republicans and President Obama, who is what used to be a moderate Republican, is called a Socialist.

So Bernie calls himself a Socialist, when he is really a mainstream Democrat. He does have a plan to add a small tax to stock trades or transfers, which would raise enough money to pay for free college, but it would be almost impossible to get this passed by Congress unless his coattails are big enough to sweep all of the Republicans out. Not gonna happen.

Cholo,

Trump has slipped into second place behind Dr. Carson. Trump was never a serious candidate, but I'm not so sure about Carson. I do think once the primaries get underway, the more traditional Republican candidates will take over. It won't be Jeb, but it might be Rubio or Cruz.

I consider myself a liberal Republican on most social issues & a conservative Republican on financial issues. I would never vote for Trump in the primary, like many Republicans, as his comments on true war hero John McCain were so inappropriate, similar to his comments blaming President Bush for 911. I really like Governor John Kasich, who has the ability to bring both parties together as a unifier, as witnessed by him winning 44 of 46 counties in battleground state Ohio. However, unfortunately he has no chance per the polls. Thus I am supporting Dr. Carson, who is clearly the smartest person in both parties running, and has lived the American dream from poverty growing up with a single mom in Detroit to Head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins. He inspires people of color that the American dream still exists if you follow the rules, work hard, unlike the Black Lives Matter group that proclaims violence against police officers & blames everyone but themselves for their bad decisions.

I am sorry that Biden is not running as he would be so much better than Bernie or Hillary.

American,

The change in the Republican Party came straight out of Carl Rove's Southern Strategy. He converted the Dixiecrats to Republicans to vote for Richard Nixon. They brought over their Religious "values," many of which I don't find valuable, along with their sexism and racism.

Nixon was a slimy character, but a surprisingly good President. It's too bad he was forced to resign. Of course that set up the Republicans to take revenge on the Clintons. The Clintons are slimy too. Hilary is much less than Bill, but he's so much more charming.

I think Bernie's appeal is that he isn't slimy. He's real. So you can like him without feeling icky all over, but I don't like him on policy issues. That's why I liked Rand Paul for awhile, because he's a Libertarian and wants to reduce the size of the Federal Government.

I've come around to agree with Conservatives that "Nanny Government," keeps us all children. A Pediatric Neurosurgeon understands the brains of children, so he might be the best choice after all.

I'm not sure about Kasich. I read something about him that turned me off but I can't remember what it was. I like Biden, and he is smart even though he's made fun of as being goofy or stupid. But that poor man has been through so many personal tragedies it's time for him to retire and spend time with his family.

Bernie is honest, but his policies of socialism are so dangerous, similar to the economic fall of the Soviet Union. Blaming those who work hard, play by the rules, and achieve economic prosperity for being " evil" is ridiculous. Capitalism is freedom, and attacking those who make money in a capitalistic society is wrong. Capitalism creates jobs, freedom, and ability for a poor, black son of a single mom to become a wealthy neurosurgeon and top presidential candidate like Dr. Carson.

Biden calling out Hillary for calling Republicans " the enemy" showed him to be a true bipartisan leader, and someone who could work with the Republicans to actually get something done. Hillary and Bernie would never be able to work with the Republicans. Trump would never be able to work with Democrats to get things done. However, I think Dr. Carson could work with Democrats & get things done for the good of the country.

I just finished reading " Killing Reagan" by Bill O'Reiley & although President Reagan & Tip O'Neil had different political views, they could work together and put our country first, and then have drink together. Nothing brings people together like sharing a pint of Guiness. Maybe I am old school Irish-Catholic, but I think our country was better & stronger when the Teddy Kennedy's & Bob Dole's could put partisan differences aside & share a beverage over brokering a deal.

A state of prolonged mutual hostility between the two parties of congress grew out of and is the collateral damage due to the near impeachment and resignation of President Richard Nixon.

There was a cooling off period during the Reagan years. When Nancy Pelosi became Speaker, she refueled the fires with her belligerent, hostile, antagonistic demeanor.

It is so bad now, recovery to an non partisan congress, that will serve the American citizen is not possible.

Unlike most Bernie-heads, I am not so delusional to believe he'll be able to accomplish a majority of his goals - and if he got elected and really was successful, there is a very real chance his life could be in danger. He would have many enemies.

No, I am voting for Bernie for the same reasons I voted for Nader in decades past: In the hopes that he can shine a glaring light on the obstructionists. You may love Sanders, hate him, or you may be indifferent, but one undeniable skill he possesses is the ability to shame those who do harm to our country. There is vast evidence of this on youtube going back many years. My hope is that unlike the all-too-diplomatic Obama, he will continue tearing the bad guys a new one every chance he gets, and just maybe a few of his campaign promises will come to fruition. None of this means he is without shortcomings, but for me he has a lot less than any other candidate.

I look forward to viewing the upcoming debates! Hopefully, the "T" will get scratched up and have his locks plucked by the press! I believe that he's mentally ill, with an Axis II Dx...he may have serious bucks but unfortunately he's waaaaaaaaaaaaay too coo-coo for this one.

I don't appreciate Ben Carson either. In time, I strongly believe that he to will be weeded out!

How could anybody possibly believe that Biden would run? He's in mourning and one doesn't just place the experience of losing a son out of mind and welcome a stressful election process? He would have to be nuts. I'm happy for Biden that he will have the time that he needs to heal and moveon with his life outside of electoral politics.

I don't know enough about Bernie and I look forward to learning more about him.

I don't trust Hillary even though she has qualities that I admire. As for the "Bill", he's clearly a nasty weasel, and a liar! I haven't forgotten that he sexually abused Monica. The power differential was so great that I can't accept his anti-social behavior. I hate the thought that me might live in the White House again.

I need more time and information on all of the candidates to figure out how I will vote. It's such an exciting time! VIVA AMERICA! VIVA!

American,

I doubt Bernie has called anyone evil. Maybe billionaires who buy politicians for their own self-interest, but not working people who start businesses. Stop repeating right-wing clichés.

Biden was in the Senate for many years. Anyone who has worked in Congress knows he/she has to work across party lines to get anything done. It's often "I'll vote for yours if you vote for mine," and the moderates could compromise. The indoctrinated won't and that's why we have a dysfunctional Government. As we have seen, even a moderate President can't change that.

Hillary is probably the most qualified person to ever be President. She's been First Lady, and knows all of the Presidential Protocols. She's been a Senator and knows how to work across the isle. She's been Secretary of State and knows International Diplomacy. I can't recall any other Presidential candidate who has that level of experience. Still that might not be enough to get by the partisan crazies!

I watched the debate, and have read many articles with quotes from Bernie, and he equates having money with being the problem, even if you earned it legally. His " one percent" rants blame those who earn six figures( 75% of Danville) for societies problems. This is America, and you should not feel bad for working hard in school, getting a job, working hard and earning a good living. I appreciate Bernie not hiding his policies & biases, but his policies and biases are dangerous to our freedoms in a capitalistic country.

It is also funny how Democrats are saying Hillary would be a great president due to her alleged great resume and allegedly being " most qualified". Few disputed that George H. Bush was " most qualified" and had best resume ever as a congressman, Director of CIA, ambassador to China, and two term Vice President. But Roz, to you, how did those great qualifications work out for you as to President George H. Bush? Unlike Hillary, at least he was an honest person. As witnessed by multiple polls, the number one word used to describe Hillary was " liar".

American,

Polls of people calling Hilary a "liar" doesn't mean she is, only that those people believe she is.

George H. Bush was never President. Chaney was President and Bush was an amiable front man. I'm not sure what kind of Governor he was in Texas, but Texas is known for electing, er, dumb Governors. I'm not sure how Ann Richards slipped past the idiot check.

I haven't heard Bernie attack rich people, only income inequality. We have a very wide gap in this country between the ultra wealthy and the other 99%.

Small business, for the most part, is not started or run by rich people. They may become rich if their business is successful, but they won't be successful without good employees.

The most prosperous time in this country was the 1950s when Unions were strong. It is always better to have more money in more hands than too much in the hands of a few Aristocrats or Oligarchs. Money floats up. It does not trickle down.

American,

You are describing the credentials of George H. W. Bush, not George W. Bush. Daddy wasn't a bad President, but he appointed some advisors who gave him bad advice. George W. didn't have a clue what was going on. Jeb doesn't have a chance. No more Bushes, and maybe no more Clintons.

Roz

Roz: I said George H , not George W, when discussing impressive qualifications. It was your mistake. American people are right about Hillary, she is a liar and her record of lying is well documented. A lot of the wealth inequalities is due to ridiculous Internet related companies & related mergers where 25 year olds become millionaires on paper overnight. Problem is these young people who often are Democrats do not donate money to charity and are into expensive toys instead of helping others. Steve Jobs is a perfect example of this as it has been often reported he gave almost nothing to charity despite his massive wealth.

When you say George W. was not President and Chaney was you lose all your credibility. Having read numerous books about his two terms, George W was certainly in charge but like a good CEO he took advice from others, including Chaney, Condi Rice, and others. Often the liberal press voiced your false stereotype that he was not bright but he was similar to Reagan in that others like you underestimated his talents which allowed him to be a good two term President.

Dispite my misgivings about Trump he's opened up a national debate over immigration that has been sadly silenced for too long by our policians. He also isn't afraid to speak his mind, unlike so many others who don't dare say anything that might be taken as controversial. Sometimes I think he really doesn't care if he wins and just shoots from the hip. It's reckless and not well thought out but I find it refreshing.

Roz,

"Polls of people calling Hilary a "liar" doesn't mean she is, only that those people believe she is."

Hillary ( and the Obama administration) most definitely lied to us regarding Benghazi and the proof was shown in the recent hearings.

While Hillary was communicating to the citizens that the cause of the attack on our embassy was a obscure video, she was privately communicating with her family and the President of Egypt that she knew it was a terrorist plot.

It was all right there, in her own emails.

The administration lied because they knew that if the truth came out that close to a election that it was 'goodnight' for Obama and their cushy jobs, and hello! Romney. They banked on the truth coming out later and people not paying attention and sure enough, they are right.

Yeah, the public thinks Hillary lies because she HERSELF has been shown to lie.

It's hi-larious that somebody who quotes from books ghost-written for Bill O'Reilly, and claims Bernie Sanders stands for soviet-style socialism, would then go off and question anybody else's "credibility."

And you can run conspiracy theories about Benghazi forever -- and the GOP has, but it just doesn't wash. Anybody with any sense knows that preliminary reports are routinely wrong. Fact of the matter is that eight rounds of haranguing have elicited exactly one moment that could be misused against the Secretary of State -- and that charge has been fully spent. Those "select" committee maroons sent Hillary a big old birthday card last week. Even their own caucus disavowed them, in advance.

Imagine a campaign pitting her against any of that clown troupe way over on the far-distant right. She will wash the floor with them, for which we should all be grateful. Politicians dissemble and have some flexibility in their positions? News Flash!

I'm not defending Hillary or supporting Hillary, but the whole Benghazi thing is a sham. Four people were killed, and Hillary knew those people. Most of the Congresspersons attacking her about it did not know them or care about them but are using this [Web Link simply to hurt her politically].

The facts are that Secretary of Defense, Leon Penetta, moved a platoon of commandos from Croatia to Italy, only an hour away from Benghazi, but the attack was over before they could get there. If they had gone in to protect the Ambassador this could have turned into another war with many more than 4 people dead.

There are a lot of secrets in Foreign Policy, and whatever the truth is can't be blabbed in public. So these "hearings" are nothing but a waste of time and money to smear Hillary. If you are a conservative, you should be outraged by millions of dollars wasted on the politicization of our Congressional budget.

Obama spends more of our tax money playing bad golf than this committee will ever spend. Having a secretary of state tell us the public that a movie was to blame for the deaths and it was not terrorism the same exact day she tells her daughter and Egypt that it was terrorism mandates an investigation. It is ironic that the only time Democrats care about costs and spending money is when it involves investigations in their misdeeds. I don't blame Hilary for preventing the deaths but I blame her for lying to the public to prevent the Obama administration from looking bad. I respect Bernie for being honest and truthful, I just don't agree with his policies. As to Hillary, she is a liar, can not be trusted, and I also disagree with her policies.

Last night's debate was a great example of why it is important that people actually watch the candidates in action, in debate, instead of just watching tv ads or blips, to get a sense of who these people really are, and who is Presidential. I was leaning toward Dr. Carson prior to the debate, but was so impressed by Senator Rubio & how he handled an attack by Governor Bush, that I am now leaning toward Rubio. He was informed, bright, polite, engaging, honest, and above the cheap attacks, all traits that I consider Presidential. As the son of legal immigrants, whose dad was a bartender & mom a maid, he is proof that the American dream still exists.

Unlike Ted Cruz, or Donald Trump, he also is a unifier, and can work with others.

I also like Governor Christie as a Vice President, tough, common sense, who also can work well with Democrats as witnessed by getting elected as a Republican in a liberal democrat state of New Jersey.

A Rubio- Christie ticket could get things done in Washington.

I missed the debates yesterday. I tried to find the station but didn't see them on. I'll look for the replay.

I was impressed with Rubio in the last debate. I like Chris Christie too. I liked that he cared more about helping the residents of his state recover from the hurricane than playing politics by rejecting help from President Obama. He's been criticized by Republicans for thanking Obama. How stupid!

I'd consider voting for a Rubio/Christie ticket. I'd prefer that to Hillary and whomever. I'm not sure yet about Bernie. I like him on a personal level, but not as President.

With all due respect, Senator Zuckerberg...er...I mean Rubio, is talking out of both sides of his mouth when speaking about immigration. Just recently he's been caught lying about H1-B visas by saying that he supports barring employers from firing american workers only to rehire H1-B's, but then his own plan calls for increasing H1-B by 3 times what is currently allowed. Huh?

Forget that I am in favor of the lowest cost, MOST QUALIFIED labor winning a position. What Rubio is doing is outright lying and I'm sick of the Republicans (ALL POLITICIANS) doing that to my face and thinking that I'll just let it pass.

Kasich, Bush and Rubio are nothing but establishment, big G country club Republicans. They've had their chance to right this country and the continue to make it worse. Heck, if I wanted more government I'd just vote Democrat and go home!

It would be wonderfully ironic if the Repubs, after 8 years of unsuccessfully trying to hang an amateur label on Obama, then decided to nominate Junior Senator Thirsty. Economic growth - 1.3% this quarter. Who reported it?
Healthcare - flat to declining growth. Costs going up. Can't keep doctor, still.

Bernie is not a socialist, but rather a democratic socialist. The former often supports a top-down, state-dictated system that usually has arisen after a failed revolution of the masses; the latter believes in letting the people democratically decide how wealth is best distributed and/or redistributed. That is what democracy should be about, despite what the fascist "free market" ideologues belch out.

Either Bernie or Hillary will trounce whomever the Republicans field as a candidate. 50% of Republican base supporting either Trump or Carson is a clear manifestation that the Republicans have no viable candidate, at all. Trump is a worthless narcissist whose xenophobic-racist rants won't play beyond the foamy-mouthed Republican base. And Carson likely will be found to have dead bodies stored in his cellar. His book (Carson's) reads at a 4th grade level. In one paragraph he condemns all the libs for calling Republicans names, and the very next paragraph he likens Obamacare to Gestapoville. Outside of his illusory bubble, he is clueless. The Jews, don't you know, might not have suffered the holocaust if only they had resisted Hitler with handguns. He equates women who have abortions to murderous slaveholders, yet doesn't have the courage of his convictions to call for imprisonment of the women who choose abortions or the doctors who assist them. He's a nutcase. Fisher could play chess better than anyone else; yet he was a racist, xenophobic, fascist. Carson is cut of the same cloth.

The rest, polling well below these two zeroes, are being "preferred" because of scripted comeback replies (Rubio, Christie), being a unifier (Kasich?!?! a faux moderate), belief in god's law over law of the land (Huck, Cruzer, and Carson once again). None of them is capable of moving beyond repetitious Republican talking points. George W. Bush, served up cold, is not a meal the electorate will support.

The Republicans don't have any smart candidates in their basket. Hmmmph! I wonder why? I mean, how smart does one have to be to carry water for the Koch bros.? Truly.

Prediction: We're looking at a brokered convention with Romney called back as prodigal candidate, or perhaps even Paul Ryan who will be exposed, as Biden so effectively demonstrated in their VP debate, as the faux "really smart guy" that he is.

I didn't vote for Romney in the last election. While I think he has very good qualifications to be president, he was out of touch with most working people and his 47% comment to wealthy donors was unfortunately condescending.

It's too bad Romney was so arrogant because I couldn't vote for Obama. He was too disappointing. He was supposed to be the "Great almost black hope," and he turned out to be Bush III. The only people who didn't notice Obama is a moderate are the "I wish we owned slaves again" Tea Party.

So I voted for Roseanne Barr. I voted for Roseanne for two reasons. One, which I have already said, is out of all the clowns running she was the funniest. The other is she had no chance of being elected. I didn't really expect Roseann to win, but if she had, I believe she would have done a pretty good job. I wish she was running now. She would be a whole lot better than Trump.

A lot of her early routines were about struggling to raise a family on low paying jobs. Her original TV show was about that, and it resonated with reality. The only other show that did that was "The Honeymooners."

I got it JB, you have no response to the points I made.

Democrats never do.

Roz,

I'm saying this kinda tongue-in-cheek, but when you say you are a conservative, but then proceed to vote for characters like Rossanne Barr, and contemplate <snicker> Bernie Sanders, you don't sound very much like a conservative.

"Unfortunately condescending" does not equal untrue; philosophically he was correct.

Ps.

Psssst, Professor JB, just in case you need an explanation, I'm not really talking about Romney in my comment to Roz, genius.

Always my pleasure :)

OBoE,

Just so we know the score:

Senate - Republican
House - Republican
Governors majority Republican
State Legislatures - majority Republican

Yesterday's election: Web Link

We'll see what happens in 2016.

Um yeah, "grasping at straws". Lol!

Ps, I'm so sorry to the blogger who supported the wife-beater sheriff of San Mateo county. Looks like the citizens didn't like his releasing illegal immigrant felons that murder innocents. One can only hope he'll take out his frustration hitting a pillow, instead of his wife. /s
