About this blog: The Raucous Caucus shares the southpaw perspectives of this Boomer on the state of the nation, the world, and, sometimes, other stuff. I enjoy crafting it to keep current, and occasionally to rant on some issue I care about deeply...  (More)

Pledge-week Ode: Turning on Inskeep

Uploaded: May 15, 2016

I’m a late adopter of Pandora. Of my several artist-stations, I’m usually drawn to The Eagles. Pandora throws many other, somewhat related songsters into the mix, including Jackson Browne (who did, after all, write most of ‘Take it Easy’). I had earlier dismissed him, after waiting in vain for that One Great Opus. I’ve had to reassess though, listening more closely and pulling-up lyrics from the web. Maybe I just wasn’t ready for some of them, but his songbook is already rich with thoughtful musings.

Anyway, ‘Running on Empty’ plays frequently on my Eagles station; it became an earworm and ‘Turning on Inskeep’ proceeded to write itself, for what that might be worth. Sorry, Jackson.

It is pledge drive week on KQED – please donate -- don’t hold this doggerel against them.

Turning On Inskeep, to Jackson Browne’s "Running On Empty,"

List’ning to all the words rushing on, past my ears,
Want some help making sense of it all, not just playing to my fears.
In 2-16 I am 65 -- seen a lot in all my years,
Now I know who I'm turning to – they’re not loud, but clear …

NPR, Turning on Inskeep,
NPR, Renee Monta-ay-agne
Add to that David Greene
And the Morning Ed team.

Gotta do what you can just to stay on up-to-date,
Trying not to confuse all the crap, with those who tell-it-straight.
In 2-16 I have finally found a newscast to call my own,
I don't know what I’d do, if I had to go it alone …

NPR, leaning on Inskeep
NPR, not some Fox News cree-e-ep
Pledging KQED
It’s the news source I keep

Everyone I know, everywhere I go,
People need some basis to believe.
I don't know about anyone but me.
They stay up all night, just to get it right,
and an occasional smile from some joke made by Steve.

Looking out at the world rushing on past my ears,
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy life appears.
Looking ‘round at the friends that I used to know, through all these years,
Looking-in past their eyes, I see some grinding gears …

NPR, trusting on Inskeep
NPR, going deep
Pledging KQED
They’re the top of the heap.

Megyn you want to tempt me,
You know, the way you look so fine.
Don’t think you buy what you say, so I'm not wasting time --
You know I don't even know what I'd be hoping to find --
When you know a good thing, the rest are all left behind.
Community.
What is it worth to you?
