Media malpractice

Uploaded: May 18, 2017
Listening to the radio Monday afternoon and then reading the Tuesday morning East Bay Times, I was struck at just how low the standards of journalism have fallen.
Monday afternoon, the Washington Post released a story based on unnamed sources that claimed President Trump had released information during a meeting with the Russians that could endanger intelligence operatives overseas.
Within a short time, H.R. McMaster, the National Security Advisor, spoke to the media and flatly denied the Post story and said it was false. McMaster was in the room for the meeting as was Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The next hourly CBS Radio News broadcast repeated the allegations in the Post story and did not mention McMaster’s denial at all. Not sure if this qualifies as “fake news,” but it is a grade F in a decent journalism school.
The next morning, the East Bay Times did almost the same thing. It led with the Post story across the front page and then buried any mention of McMaster’s first-hand denial on the jump page.
Fair treatment would have run the stories side-by-side.
As is, both CBS and the Times put greater credence in unnamed sources than they did in a person who attended the meeting.
In my day of running newsrooms, we were cautious about using unnamed sources in potentially controversial stories. If a story was ever challenged in court and we could not produce a source, the court could simply rule that we made it up.

The Zone 7 water agency’s latest newsletter disclosed costs for the repairs to the spillway at Oroville Dam. Emergency repairs ordered by the Dept. of Water Resources cost about $250 million, of which Zone 7’s share is $5 million. The state agency also let a contract for $275million for long term rebuilding that will cost Zone 7 ratepayers another $5.5 million. That assumes the rebuilding can be completed within the budget.
ESPN.com reported a father-son story with a nice local tie. Former NFL defensive lineman Greg Kragen grew up in Pleasanton and starred at Amador Valley High. The piece concerned his 24-year-old son, Kyle, who had been signed by the Carolina Panthers. Kragen played the final season of his 13-year career with the Panthers in the franchise’s first season as an expansion team.
While Greg, now 55, played defensive line—Kyle is a linebacker. What they share, beyond their genes, is both were undrafted after their college careers. Greg caught on with Denver and played nine seasons there—making the Pro Bowl and playing in three Super Bowls.
Kyle, who played for Cal, will go to training camp this summer and try to make the Panthers who are loaded with talent at his linebacking position.
Greg is coaching at Foothill Community College.
Community.
What is it worth to you?

President Trump is a pathological liar. Who cares if the press tells the truth about anything? The truth is of little value anymore...tell a lie, get elected President of the United States...tee hee hee...

wow, everything that has occurred this week with the Trump Admin and you land on 'unnamed sources' were used? ahem. You hear of Watergate? Deep Throat? Pretty sure it would be irresponsible of the media to 'hold' a major story because none of the 'sources' wish to be named. Let's keep it all quiet until somebody goes public? That can't be your opinion because what is left of print media would disappear overnight as there would be only warm n fuzzy fluff pieces. And most know warm n fuzzy fluff articles don't sell newspapers. Or generate viewership.

And Hillary Clinton is not a liar?

People should be more concerned about how BOTH the Democrats and Republicans are doing the nation a dis-service.

It's clear the hate and anger of both parties and their followers are ruining our country.

I saw on the news the terrible incident in Washington DC where the Turkish security people attacked protestors. Many people said this was not how we do things in the US, conveniently forgetting about the hate shown in Berkeley and other places that people have for Trump supporters.

The Democrats are not the answer to our problems - we need a new, moderate party that represents the true majority of Americans. The election of President Trump was a clear message that things need to change. If Hillary Clinton could not beat a scumbag like Trump, because she is as big a scumbag as he is, Democrats definitely are not the answer.

Well, Huh??, maybe you will get your wish for a new party. If rumors are true that a criminal RICO case is coming against the GOP itself, then that may well be the deathknell for that party. We shall see.

Posted by Huh??, a resident of Pleasanton Valley,

Dave - So that would clean out half the problem. How do we get rid of the Democrats? They are just as bad. Or are you in a state of denial?

The political 'noise' and associated comments hid a great deal by Zone 7....$5?
Wow!

Deepthroat, American hero a/k/a Mark Felt, is spinning in his grave after reading this apologia for the consistently disingenuous, conflicting and incompetent propaganda issuing forth from the White House.

When the brutal and brief Trump 'era' is over, the free press will once again be rightfully hailed as heroic guardians of the American Experiment in democracy.

If the democrats have success railroading Trump out of office!
Pence, a much better conservative and realist, will take the oath to be President.

Pence, by way of his service during his time in office, as President, will direct the necessary policies, that will elect majority conservative republican candidates to congress for decades to come.

Mainstream media has become dishonest, well beyond fake news. They are creating the news and outcome by criminally using 'sources' as their substantiation to write the outcome they want. Law enforcement has more restrictions on using informants in their profession than these news organizations. These allegations that the sewerstream media loves to push on the public, will in the end prove to be false. Liberals stand behind these news outlets because they can't stand Trump; I get that, but fair and honest reporting is an important aspect of our democracy. It's sad though, the Democrats used to believe that.

Posted by Sam, a resident of Oak Hill,

No, guys. You can't blame all of Trump's woes on Democrats or the so-called "MSM". Donald Trump has been shooting himself in the foot over and over and over again since he became President. The White House administration officials say that FBI Director Comey was fired on the basis of the assistant Attorney General's memo. But then Donald Trump himself comes out and says that that's not true, and that he had always planned to fire Comey, memo or no memo. Eggs on the faces of administration officials.

Then the so-called "MSM" reports that Donald Trump gave the Russians classified information! "Foul!", claim conservatives and White House officials. "There goes the MSM with their lies again!", say conservatives. But then Donald Trump comes out and says that, yes, he DID give classified information to the Russians and that as President he had the right to do so. Once again, eggs on the faces of all the conservatives who claimed that the "MSM" was lying.

This is all quite amusing. Really. If some of you are unable to see that Donald Trump's mouth - not the mainstream media - is Donald Trump's worst enemy then I feel very sorry for you because you really are missing out on a lot of humor here.

Do I wish that Donald Trump could turn it all around and suddenly and miraculously start acting like a mature adult? Sure. Do I expect to see such a miracle? No. This is the Donald that we are stuck with for the next four years. Expect lots and lots of blunders and fiascos for the next four years and, no, it won't be the mainstream media's fault. If you're honest with yourself you'll recognize who is really to blame for all of the upcoming blunders and fiascos that you're going to witness: Donald Trump himself. That's just his nature, and he doesn't care if you like it or not.

Jake: with powers of whining like that, why you could be President! But there's Not a Shred of Evidence presented in your post to back-up your charges.

About dishonesty - where's your beef? Not a perfect record (what profession's is?), but when rare instances are discovered, they are a Big Deal. The guilty are made to apologize and in serious cases (like making up 'alternative facts'), they get drummed out of the corps. In the WH, that stuff gets you promoted.

About "criminally" using sources? What crimes, What sources? What nonsense!

Please name three recent stories that "will prove to be false." Then we'll see.

The rest of your post is just angry "othering" of folks with whom you disagree. Sad. And no, I'm not a newsman.

@Woodbern (I get the parody of Woodard - this isn't close to Watergate)

LOL! I need not prove anything, it is you liberals that are in the position of supporting your claims. You do have those Democrat talking points down though. Show us the evidence that he is guilty of anything other than tweeting too much. And please, don't site some anonymous source that doesn't exist. Perhaps you should listen to or read Allan Dershowitz's commentary (a civil libertarian and Democrat that voted for Hillary) on Trump and his firing of Comey and his questioning of Comey about General Flynn. I get that you hate Trump, but the press has gone insane with anger. Now we see the Sacramento Democrats going above and beyond anger to a point of hateful discourse that would not have been tolerated of Republicans under Obama. And for the record, I am not a defender of Trump, I just believe in the adversity of free speech and truth that seems to have been forgotten by the liberals.

The only reason to support your passionate claims and criminal charges with actual evidence is if you want to convince anyone else that they are true.

Your refusal of the opportunity, coupled with the regurgitation of your prior post, are unconvincing, to say the least.

@Jake Waters

From what I have read about recent events, Donald Trump has not yet crossed the line into impeachable offenses. However - and this doesn't seem to be disputed by most people regardless of party affiliation - Trump has been getting very close to crossing the line. That's why Comey saw fit to record in writing his recent discussions with Trump and share with associates his recent experiences with Trump.

So, no, I don't believe that Trump has yet crossed the line into impeachment hearings. But what is very disturbing is that Trump seems to have no clue or awareness of the fact that he is close to venturing over and crossing the line. I'm sure that his advisors - including the ones who have been frantically researching the subject of Presidential impeachment in order to protect Trump - are well aware of the dangers here and are warning Trump over this. Unfortunately, as you and I both know, Donald Trump isn't very good at taking advice from others. If he does get impeached, Trump will only have himself to blame.

Ahhhhhh! I love when all the libs come out en' masse to opine to all things Trump.

On Russian collusion: evidence of ANY election collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians? Anyone?

On firing Comey: Evidence of obfuscation? Anyone?

Taxes: Evidence of whatever he is accused of doing with his taxes? Anyone?

Impeachment: On what grounds? Did he break any laws? Anyone?

The New York times sourced the Comey memo from a phone conversation - A PHONE CONVERSATION! - they didn't even view a document for crying out loud!! And some of you look at this as evidence?

This is the state of MSM reporting on Trump. Phone conversations and anonymous sources that have provided NOT ONE BIT OF EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING that Trump has been accused.

ZERO!!!!

And all you genius' realize that you cannot use newspaper articles as a evidence in a criminal investigation, right? Do any of you know why? ANYONE??

I've been kicking back laughing at all of you looking at white sheets and swearing you're seeing ghosts.

Trump is exhibiting all the traits of someone who is completely innocent. He can act and say the things he's does because he has nothing to be worried about.

Mark my words, the moment he clams up is the moment he has been caught.

Sam,

PLEASE point out my twisted and distorted facts!!

I notice how you NEVER provide a fact-based rebuttal to anything anyone says; always with generalities.

Want examples of your completely useless analysis? Here goes:

1.) "From what I have read about recent events, Donald Trump has not yet crossed the line into impeachable offenses..."

Well we're certainly glad that Sam thinks that Trump is not impeachable...yet! Of course, you don't go into a smidgen of detail to explain what would be his impeachable event, but hey, that's just detail eh Sam?

2.) "That's why Comey saw fit to record in writing his recent discussions with Trump and share with associates his recent experiences with Trump."

Really? And you have this evidence of written records? It seems to me these records are the governments given that they -if in fact they exist- were made in the course of Comey 's job. But again, you have no evidence that they a.) even exist and b.) say exactly what has been reported.

3.) "But what is very disturbing is that Trump seems to have no clue or awareness of the fact that he is close to venturing over and crossing the line."

So as an amateur psychologist, you might want to explain how you have gleaned this from the mind of another human being. You make the accusation, but then don't point out why you think he has no "clue or awareness". Give us your professional opinion, Doctor.

4.) "I'm sure that his advisors - including the ones who have been frantically researching the subject of Presidential impeachment in order to protect Trump - are well aware of the dangers here and are warning Trump over this."

Evidence of your surety? I mean you SAY that some are trying to protect him, but who? How do you know this? I've never heard anything related to this topic ANYWHERE and even if it is true, so what?

5.) "Unfortunately, as you and I both know, Donald Trump isn't very good at taking advice from others."

Do you have a single shred of evidence to back up this claim? I can tell you at least one thing that he changed his mind on since the election and that is building the new embassy in Jerusalem. I suppose you think he just decided this on his own?

Ok, so I just literally ripped to shreds your last substantive (I use that term loosely) post and showed how it is ALL based on generalities and supposition, yet you have the unmitigated gall to say that my post is "twisted and distorted"?

Try upping your game a little and give us facts Sam. I'm happy when ANY politician is caught in illegal activities, I'm an equal opportunity critic in that respect, but they actually have to commit, ummm, illegalities before I'm convinced.

Always fun.

Regarding impeachment:

I think it is hilarious that my liberal friends are shrieking about impeachment as if its something new to a Republican President.

Headline 2017:" What would happen if Donald Trump were impeached?"
Web Link

Headline 2004: "Can we talk of impeachment?"
Web Link

In case any of you were wondering, the 2004 headline was in regards to Bush.

All that is old is new again!

Seems to me the last President impeached had a big fat (D) attached to his name.

One of these days, you libs MIGHT get it right.

"Evidence of your surety? I mean you SAY that some are trying to protect him, but who? How do you know this? I've never heard anything related to this topic ANYWHERE and even if it is true, so what?"

The fact that Trump's White House lawyers have been researching the subject of Presidential impeachment has been all over the news, Dan. Do a Google news search of the words "trump lawyers impeachment research" and you'll find plenty of stories. The fact that you say that you've never heard anything about this only shows that you spend too much time posting and mouthing off, and not enough time reading.

Oh, and all your other points were equally weak so I won't waste any further time commenting on them.

I'm sorry, was this post also too filled with "generalities" for you or were you able to understand it and find the news stories yourself without me having to provide you with a detailed reading list of news links?

Isn't the only item that 'might' rise to the level of impeachment is the firing of Comey? While the Prez has the 'right' to do the termination, if he did it to hinder an active investigation THAT would be obstruction to justice. High crime and misdemeanor? Maybe. But would the darling GOP controlled congress do such a thing? House would need simply majority to send on its way to the senate, and they require 2/3 to uphold finding. What a waste of time if attempted. While Trump does foam at the mouth like the leading GOP defender in these forums, and he does shoot himself in the foot with his mouth (like the cheerleader here does) and he is a whack-a-doodle President; nothing really points to removing him...yet... What would drive Trump to quit and go truly bonkers? If the media ignored him completely. That would drive him right over the cliff. BUT, if anything, Trump drives viewership pro and con. Just remember 48% of the voting public wanted him and right this second like 80% of those still defend him no matter what he does/says. I would mention the lowest approval ratings ever, but the troll would come unglued.

If you had been paying attention, even the DEMOCRATS have been walking back any impeachment talk. Why, you might ask? Because they probably know that all this has been kabuki theater from the very beginning.

This has all been brought to the forefront because Clinton lost an election that everybody thought was hers. There has to be ANTHER reason why she lost and, lo' and behold, its the RUSSIANS!

Having been around horses many years, I know that a horse has five gaits.
The walk, trot, canter/lope, gallop and back.

When I googled prance and got the horse information, was surprising, because a horse does not prance as the googled information defined. Prance is not any part of a horse gait.

Prance must be undefined democratic dialog!

I don't remember anybody on the left complaining when IRS official Doris Learner claimed the 5th when she was caught targeting conservative groups. Yes?

NOW you worry about someone claiming the 5th??

If it wasn't for double-standards, the left would have no standards.
