Different colleges offer different programs and services to help undergraduate students prepare for admission to law school and to find internships and other opportunities that help them to consider a career in the law as well as other professions.
While virtually all small, mid-sized and larger colleges offer pre-law advising either through their career development center or through academic advising services, it is not done the same way at every school.
Among the value-added programs and services offered different schools are:
• Membership in career-related consortiums with colleges and/or universities that have agreed to share internship and job postings or conducted in-person events together to help students to find jobs or internships in major cities.
• Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, the national pre-law fraternity.
• Other networking groups where undergraduates can meet with and/or shadow lawyers at work.
• Academic programs in legal studies that offer coursework to help undergraduates to succeed in law school or in other career directions in business and government.
• Mock Trial program for undergraduates interested in learning and trying cases in a simulated court room in regional and national competitions.
• Partnerships for early admission to law school where undergraduates take courses in the law school during their senior year in college.
• Honors colleges within the larger schools that offer smaller honors classes and/or living and learning communities. This helps to make the education at a larger school closer to being as personal as it is at a smaller one.
When you are constructing a college list and considering prelaw studies, it pays to do this extra step in your research!
