The San Ramon Planning Commission is set to discuss a proposed new day care center on San Ramon Valley Boulevard and a revised expansion plan for a church on Alcosta Boulevard on Tuesday night.
The first project on the commission’s agenda is a proposal to bring a new 3,490-square-foot building to 2023 San Ramon Valley Blvd. for Genius Kids Day Care Center.
The new, single-story building would sit at the back part of the property, which is a narrow rectangular lot that houses The Cabinet Center at the front along the thoroughfare. The site is near Hooper Drive and next door to Gianni's Italian Bistro.
The day care center, which could serve a maximum of 72 children, would feature four classrooms and an entry lounge/office space.
The Planning Commission is being asked to approve a development plan, an architectural review and a use permit as well as ease setback requirements and allow the center to only offer 19 parking spots as opposed to the 22 required under city rules.
The second proposal Tuesday is an updated expansion plan from the Church of the Nazarene, which has its Christ Community Church at 12700 Alcosta Blvd., between Norris Canyon and Bollinger Canyon roads.
The new plan consists of smaller buildings, split into two phases, compared to the expansion plan approved for the church site in 2010, according to Lauren Barr, acting manager of the city’s Planning Division.
The revised proposal calls for a 350-seat sanctuary and classrooms, with the potential for a single-story, second phase of additional classrooms. With the existing church building, the full expansion would leave the church with 19,000 square feet of building space. The new sanctuary would be 46 feet tall at its tallest point.
The concept represents a reduction from the 450-seat sanctuary with classrooms and fellowship hall, totaling 34,000 square feet, approved for the church site in 2010.
The proposed church expansion on the site’s lower lot would sit across a shared parking lot from the 82-bed senior care facility approved for the upper lot in August 2015. Construction on that project is expected to start this year, Barr said.
The commission could consider giving final approval to the church expansion revisions Tuesday night.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. inside the council chamber at San Ramon City Hall, 7000 Bollinger Canyon Road. For more information on the projects, review the commission’s staff reports online.
In other business, the commissioners will talk with staff about the city’s development plan concept review process, which allows potential developers to ask the commission about a project early on to receive initial feedback about their concept before submitting formal applications.
City planning staff will ask the commissioners for input on the concept review process and any changes they might like to see.

Why would the city make an exception and grant the new day center fewer parking spaces than city rules require? The city rules were made for a reason - PLEASE stick to them when approving development plans!
