The Eugene O’Neill Foundation is set for its first performance of 2018 coming up next week in Danville, with staged readings of the playwright’s intense personal drama “Days Without End.”

The readings — produced by the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House — will take place at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, 205 Railroad Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m.

The Sunday performance is now sold out. Tickets for the Jan. 6 reading are $25 and available for purchase online.

“Days Without End,” written by O’Neill in 1933, follows the internal struggles of protagonist John Loving as he debates his faith and writes a book. His character is played by two different actors, portraying the multiple sides of his personality.

“This is a rare chance to see a play lost to time,” said Eric Fraisher Hayes, director of artistic programs for the O’Neill Foundation. “The idea that every person contains many persons becomes a striking theatrical component of ‘Days Without End.’ The play touches on the timely topic of creating and controlling one’s own narrative. Writing this play was an intensely personal experience for O’Neill, as it touches on a brief period of time when he considered returning to the Catholic Church of his youth.”

The reading stars Teddy Spencer and Chad Deverman as John Loving and also features Elena Wright, Jesse Caldwell, Aaron Wilton and Danielle Levin.

Eugene O’Neill lived at Tao House in Danville from 1937-44, where he wrote his final works. He’s the only American playwright to have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and he also is the recipient of four Pulitzer Prizes, three while he was living and one posthumously.

The Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House was established in 1974 and seeks to further the legacy of O’Neill through its educational, artistic and research programs.
