A Danville man died in an electric bicycle crash in the western part of town on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The man was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as Keith Howard, 73.

At around 2:55 p.m. on Monday, Howard was riding his electric bike on Highland Drive when he hit a speed bump at the intersection of Highland and Lonesome Road and went airborne, according to town spokesman Geoff Gillette.

He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek to be treated for what Gillette believes were head and wrist injuries.

Howard died at the hospital at 4:30 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.

No one else was injured in the crash, Gillette said. Police interviewed two witnesses to determine what happened.

The incident is still being investigated, but according to Danville Police Chief Allan Shields, the preliminary investigation indicates drugs or alcohol were not a factor.

  1. My heart goes out to Keith Howard’s family – very sorry for your loss.

In case people get too hung up on the fact that this occurred on an electric bike…be aware that these can not only help you go faster, but some can help you go slower, using regenerative braking, which could be quite useful on some of the steep hills we have around here such as on Highland Drive, where this incident happened.
