A Concord man was arrested after a hit-and-run car crash in San Ramon that led to an hour-long lockdown at Montevideo Elementary School late Friday morning, according to authorities.

The incident began at 10:50 a.m. when an officer tried to stop a car for a speed violation at Alcosta Boulevard and Estero Drive, near Pine Valley Road, according to San Ramon police Lt. Todd Santiago. The driver of the dark sedan stopped at first, but then fled at high speed.

The officer did not start a high-speed pursuit out of safety concerns for the community and because of heavy fog in the area, Santiago said. However, he followed at a safe speed and found the man had crashed into a house at Vera Cruz and Montevideo drives, about a mile to the northwest of the initial stop.

The driver ran away from the car, according to Santiago. Officers set up a perimeter and began K-9 searches, aided by the Walnut Creek Police Department, a San Ramon police K-9 officer and an East Bay Regional Park District police helicopter.

San Ramon police placed the nearby Montevideo Elementary on a precautionary lockdown for about an hour starting at around 11:15 a.m., said Elizabeth Graswich, spokeswoman for the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

The driver, who has been identified as Lenny James Cabrera, a 36-year-old from Concord, was seen by people at Country Brook Rental Condominiums, Santiago said, about a mile north of the crash.

Officers located and arrested him at about 12:10 p.m. on suspicion of evasion and hit-and-run misdemeanors, according to Santiago, at which point they discovered that he had two felony warrants out for his arrest: a warrant from Concord police for felony drug, identity theft and grand theft charges; and a warrant from Pleasant Hill police for charges of felony drug, identity theft and possession of firearm and ammunition by a felon.

The Concord warrant had set his bail at $730,000 and the Pleasant Hill warrant had it set at $355,000, according to officials.

After being apprehended, Cabrera was transported to the hospital as a precaution from the high speed crash, and then booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.

“I like to thank our community for their help in the capture of this subject,” Santiago said. “This arrest is a great example of how our community and police work together to provide a safer City of San Ramon.”

  1. This is getting crazy! This guy should have been in prison and not running around with the innocent public! Are the liberal judges and Governor Moonbeam Brown, going to.turn him loose now again too?

  2. Based on the limited information in the article it suggests the courts acted properly and judges issued felony arrest warrants. It is the role of law enforcement to then locate and arrest the individual. Nothing here indicates Mr. Cabrera was already in custody and released as part of a liberal conspiracy by judges or the governor. Perhaps Rob U ought to stop jumping to wild and unfounded conclusions based on his preconceived politically based notions.
