With air support from county sheriff’s deputies, Danville police arrested an Oakland man after a pursuit on Friday morning.

The 22-year-old man was taken into custody around 11 a.m. Friday on suspicion of felony evasion, with police saying additional charges may be sought after their investigation is completed because the car he was driving was reported stolen during a carjacking in Hayward.

Danville Police Chief Allan Shields said the department’s automated license plate reader system flagged the stolen vehicle in Danville near Diablo Road and Camino Tassajara on Friday. Soon after officers located the vehicle, described as a 2016 Honda HRV, on McCauley Road near Monza Court.

A male suspect attempted to flee the area on foot, but air support from Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Starr3 helicopter helped locate the man, Shields said.

The man faced undisclosed minor injuries while trying to evade police on foot and was taken by ambulance to San Ramon Regional Medical Center, Shields said.

The sheriff’s office established its air support unit in 1997 and currently has two helicopters to help authorities manage crime from the air. So called STARR helicopters are often used to locate suspects, assist in search and rescue operations and regularly conduct patrols along the Delta waterways.

Editor’s note: The man’s name was withheld in accordance with Embarcadero Media’s policy on naming arrestees prior to prosecutors filing formal charges.
