Deputies investigating death at county jail

Man found hanging in shower

An inmate was pronounced dead while in custody Tuesday morning at the Martinez Detention Facility, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

Just before 7:45 a.m., a deputy found the man hanging in a shower.

He was unresponsive and life-saving efforts by medical staff and firefighters responding to the jail were unsuccessful.

The man has been identified as 52-year-old Antioch resident Phillip Jacobson, according to sheriff's officials.

Jacobson was booked into jail on July 11, 2017 on suspicion of eight felony counts of child molestation, and his bail was set at $4,150,000.

The death is under investigation by the sheriff's office and the county's district attorney.
