Alamo man killed in solo crash on Rudgear Road

CHP: 82-year-old drove through Danville Blvd. intersection, struck tree

An 82-year-old man from Alamo died when he drove his Volkswagen sedan off of the roadway and into a nearby tree Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers responded to the solo-vehicle crash at approximately 10:30 a.m. in the area of Rudgear Road and Danville Boulevard, just west of Interstate 680 near Alamo, where they found the man’s car in a ditch. First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.

CHP officials say the unidentified man was driving down Rudgear Road toward its intersection with Danville Boulevard, and for reasons still under investigation, drove through the intersection, then off the road and into the ditch. No other vehicles appear to have been involved in the crash.

As of 1 p.m. Thursday, personnel from the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office are in the process of identifying the man.

The crash is still under investigation and the CHP is encouraging any witnesses with information to contact the Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, 646-4980.
