The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has again received top marks by the California Department of Education, meeting or exceeding performance standards in every category of the California School Dashboard accountability system.
Through the Dashboard, schools and districts are graded in six categories: suspensions, chronic absenteeism, graduation rate, college and career readiness, and academic proficiency in English language arts and mathematics, along with English learner progression. Five local measures revolving around a district’s community are also considered and graded on a pass-fail basis.
Categories are graded by a color system; blue marks the highest performance, followed by green, yellow, orange and schools with the lowest performance will be marked as red.
SRVUSD excelled throughout each criteria, receiving a blue rating in four of the six categories — graduation rates, college and career readiness, English language arts and mathematics — and earning green in suspensions and chronic absenteeism.
While graduation rates dropped 1.1% from last year, but according to the Dashboard, at 97% SRVUSD seniors graduate at a much higher rate than the state average of 83.5%.
One area the district has seen a large drop in is in the suspension rates of foster youth. In 2017 suspensions for this demographic remained in the blue, but now it has dropped to the red, with reportedly 23.8% of students in foster care having been suspended at least once.
Suspension rates have grown slightly overall — 1.4% of students have been suspended at least once compared to last year’s 1.3%, but still remains low compared to the state average of 3.5%.
Local indicators don’t follow the color system; instead a district will simply met or fail to met the standard. The SRVUSD met the standard of each of these measures which include: quality of teachers, materials and facilities, implementation of academic standards, parent engagement, climate and access to a broad course of study.
Dashboard also graded individual schools on performance and found that overall SRVUSD schools performed exceptionally well. The only individual school to receive a red mark was San Ramon’s Venture Independent Study School, which received the lowest possible rating for chronic absenteeism and graduation rates.
It should be noted that graduation rate and college and career readiness were only measured at the high school level, and chronic absenteeism only for elementary and middle school students.
