The city of San Ramon is giving residents the opportunity to experience new settings, appreciate thought-provoking stories and soak up some culture from around the world as its “Friday Foreign Film Series” continues this month.

“Friday Foreign Films” screens a critically acclaimed foreign film one Friday a month at San Ramon’s Front Row Theatre, taking audiences on a journey exploring the cultures of countries from Denmark to Sri Lanka.

Movies are subtitled in English, and will feature a discussion of the film led by a moderator after the film has concluded. Attendees will also provided with light refreshments to enjoy with the screening.

February’s screening features “Dheepan,” a French crime drama and winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or. It tells the story of three Tamali refugees who flee war torn Sri Lanka, seeking safe harbor in France. The trio form a family and face new challenges as they try to rebuild their lives in a new country.

“Dheepan” is set to screen Feb. 22, 7 p.m., it is rated R and has a run time of 100 minutes.

In March, residents will have the opportunity to view the Spanish/Argentinian film, “Truman.” A dark comedy-drama, in Truman Julián receives an unexpected visit from his friend, Tomás, who lives in Canada and gives his friend some troubling news. The two men, along with Julián’s faithful dog, Truman, share an emotional and intense few days together, as they try to cope with Julián’s complicated situation.

“Truman” is not rated and will play for viewers March 22 at 7 p.m.; it has a run time of 108 minutes.

April’s screening will show “After the Wedding,” and take viewers to Denmark with a stop in India. In After the Wedding Jacob Petersen receives an offer from a Danish corporation that will help keep an orphanage he manages from going bankrupt. As Petersen goes to collect the offer, he discovers a life-altering family secret that will change his life forever.

“After the Wedding” was was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. It will screen April 11 at 7 p.m., has a run time of 120 minutes and is rated R.

The final scheduled film in the series “Force Majeure,” is an internationally co-developed film that will visit San Ramon in May. A dark comedy, Force Majeure tells the story of a Swedish family visiting the French Alps for ski vacation. One day an avalanche shakes the family’s trust in their father, and may permanently divide them from one another.

“Force Majeure” is set to play May 3, at 7 p.m. It has a run time of 120 minutes and is rated R.

The remaining “Friday Foreign Film Series” will run February through May at the Front Row Theatre,17011 Bollinger Canyon Road, San Ramon. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online, teens under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
