Contra Costa County Supervisor Diane Burgis, who represents parts of the San Ramon Valley, was recovering from heart surgery Tuesday morning after undergoing a planned procedure to replace her aortic valve, according to a statement from her chief of staff Mark Goodwin.

The surgery took about four hours, starting at 8 a.m. Monday and finishing around noon, and Burgis was said to be conscious and joking with friends by the evening. Her hospital stay is expected to continue for about a week, Goodwin said.

“I’m not sure what the greater challenge will be, keeping her away from the work she loves while she recovers or keeping up with her when she gets back, but I look forward to both,” Goodwin said. “We’re grateful to the medical team at John Muir Hospital Concord and to everyone who has reached out to express their support.”

Well-wishers can send cards and flowers to the supervisor’s office at 3361 Walnut Blvd., Brentwood, CA 94513.

Currently in her first term on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, Burgis represents the largest of the five districts, geographically, covering Blackhawk, Diablo and Tassajara Valley in southern Contra Costa, as well as Antioch, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen and Oakley in the east.
