Classified employee staff hour reductions will be on the San Ramon Valley Unified School district’s agenda Thursday morning, when district officials gather for a special board meeting.

The reduction or elimination of classified employee hours is a relatively routine item that will commonly find its way onto the Board of Education’s agenda at the end of each school year, according to district staff.

In a staff report district officials said these reductions are “necessary to meet specific program needs and/or to address specific declining enrollment in the district.”

This year, the district will consider eliminating a total of 13.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) hours worth of classified employment positions for the 2019-2020 school year.

To start the district will consider eliminating 8.1 FTE at 11 positions for classified employees at as of yet unspecified schools. The board will then consider the reduction of an additional 5.4 FTE across nine position at unidentified schools.

The Board of Education’s special meeting will be held 8 a.m. Thursday, at the SRVUSD offices, 699 Old Orchard Drive, Danville.

  1. This is completely wrong! This board just took a raise and it is their second one this year! If one of them passed on their raise it would cover the cost of these cuts. They need to remove themselves! They are not for the kids AT ALL!

  2. This is ridiculous, the schools have already shifted so much burden to the parents and yet they plan to take on LESS after all that raises?! Where is education going? Do they expect all parents to not work so their expensive raises can no longer be afforded with tax money?

  3. If we’re not happy with the way this district is going, we must vote them out.
First, we need candidates. This board is complacent and comfortable. They have run unopposed for years so they feel the community is happy with what they’re doing.
If we’re not happy, we must generate our own change. They will never do it for us.

  4. Classified staff hours, especially custodial, should be INCREASED instead of decreased.

Remember when misbehaving children in period piece movies had to stay after school and “clean the blackboard?” How about students in this district “shadow” custodians and help with sweeping, common area trash pick up, window sill cleaning, etc. Pl-ease do not respond with hazards and safety remarks.

To “Seriously”: this is a joke response(kind of). Maybe in addition to facilities bonds, parents will be forced to pledge a day of duty each school year to help out. That, in addition to strong-armed “donations” at the start of school years.

  5. I can’t believe the inaccurate statements in these posts. The school board has had no raises in its stipend in over a decade. Principals and other managers got one raise this year just like the teachers and actually identical to the teachers. The school district for the first time in its history is declining in enrollment and in fact has lost over a thousand students in recent years with another 3 to 4 thousand predicted in the next few years. That generally means less staff is needed. Also, the District gets thousands of dollars less per student than many surrounding districts in the Bay Area. I saw an article that said SRVUSD is the 4th lowest funded K-12 school district in California. Yet, the District has some of the highest test scores and proficiency rates in the state. Instead of critizing maybe you should be praising the District for using the tax dollars wisely and effectively.

  6. Monte Vista Joe,
The point is the SRVUSD administration is stacking raises upon raises. The superintendent salary is going up along with the teachers. Yet he has increases that the teachers do not receive. The SRVUSD administrations contains to take the credit for the hard work of the teachers, parents and students. The district administration seeks to undermine the safety and tools needed to provide for the students. SRVUSD is creating additional administration positions while cutting teachers. They cost the school districts over 300,000 in increasing insurance premiums because of their present and past history of lawsuits. Their passive nature on dealing with problem employees have resulted in large lawsuits. The school board has continued to hire administration positions from much smaller school districts and their performance in crisis shows their lack of experience. A review of SRVUSD administration salaries show each of the top positions personnel have salaries that are 100% increases of their salaries from 5 years ago. It’s fine to seek talent but the school board seeks mid-low level talent and then pays them like their gods.

The school board is a rubber stamp for the administration they have shown that their allegiance is not with the students or parents. As most school districts have learned term limits are needed to insure school board members remain objective in their review of the school district administration. Are school board is stagnant and has grown complacent with high test scores driven by the outstanding increase in outside tutoring we parents are providing. The districts decisions are not reflected by the test scores because the students and parents are high performing not the school district administration. The safety decisions that this school board and administration decided in order to cut cost will cause the parents and students to being paying for a lifetime. The student drowning was because this school board and administration decided the safety of our children was not critical.
