The Danville Town Council on Tuesday is set to consider supporting an 8% rate increase for RecycleSmart for solid waste and recycling services next year.

Town officials say the rate increase would increase residential services by approximately $2.08 to $5.82 per month and commercial services by $13.04 to $39.13 per month, depending on the customer’s service plan.

According to a staff report by assistant to the town manager Diane Friedmann, annual rates are set based on the costs of delivering solid waste and recycling services. She added that, beyond compensating crews, rates are also based upon “RecycleSmart administrative costs, franchise fees and vehicle impact fees that are charged to partially mitigate the impacts that refuse collection vehicles have upon the Town’s public streets.”

The proposed 2020 rates would generate an estimated $10,531,221 in revenue, which would be sufficient to fund service delivery and other related costs for these waste services.

If the Town Council approves the recommendation, the RecycleSmart board — a joint powers authority (JPA) that provides waste collection and recycling services for communities throughout central Contra Costa County — will review the 8% increase and consider approving it during a public hearing on Jan. 23, with new rates becoming effective on March 1.

The Danville Town Council is set to hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. in the Town Meeting Hall, 201 Front St., Danville.

  1. Please Don’t raise rates.. there service sucks !! we have to call almost every week because they didn’t pick up one can or another on our whole street.. If this happen on your street please make comment and send letter to town.. IMPROVE GARBAGE SERVICE DON’T CHARGE US MORE FOR BAD SERVICE !!!

  2. As I recall, Danville awarded the contract to a new trash/recycle company with an increase in our rates a couple of years ago. Now we are going to raise the rates again by 8%? Ppl on fixed income do not have the luxury of requesting an increase of their SS or pension benefits to keep covering these type of costs.

  3. I sent the town manager an email-our garbage is often missed and debris is all over the street falling out of cans in the neighborhood. Service should improve before rates are raised.
