César Chávez celebration

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is set to hold their 29th annual César E. Chávez celebration and awards ceremony next week, aimed at “recognizing his commitment to social justice and respect for human dignity,” according to an announcement from the board.

“We honor César E. Chávez and recognize his legacy of fighting injustice and improving the lives of farmworkers, their families, and their communities. We are inspired to commit ourselves to service to others,” said Board Chair Supervisor John Gioia. “We also recognize our 2023 Youth Hall of Fame awardees whose commitment to service and community are to be applauded and are the force moving forward Cesar Chavez’s legacy.”

This year’s keynote speaker will be former San Pablo Mayor Genoveva Garcia Calloway, who will share reflections on Chávez’ life and legacy, with the theme of the upcoming celebration being “Hope and Healing.”

The event will also feature music and dance performances, as well as honoring this year’s inductees into the county’s Youth Hall of Fame. Prisha Purohit, a junior at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, received the high school award for teamwork this year, with Athenian School juniors Anay Pant and Aria Capelli earning the leadership and civic engagement and good samaritan award respectively.

Festivities are set to kick off at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (April 4) at 11 a.m. More information is available here.

San Ramon Trails Challenge

Registration is now open for the San Ramon Trails Challenge, which kicks off on Saturday (April 1). The challenge is aimed at encouraging residents to tackle five out of seven of the San Ramon Valley’s featured trails in the ensuing five months through September.

This year’s featured trails are the Monarch, Summit View to Old Ranch, West Alamo, Bollinger Creek to Elderberry, Rolling Hills, East Alamo Creek, and Dougherty Valley Ridge to West Alamo Creek loop trails.

More information on the trails and the free, self-guided program is available here.

Secret history bus tour

Former San Ramon Mayor and history buff Bill Clarkson is set to guide a bus tour of the “secret history” of the San Ramon Valley next month.

The four and a half hour tour is set to take visitors to a number of different sites throughout the region and educate them about the overlooked historical stories behind the sites.

The event is scheduled from 8:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. on April 15. More information and registration are available here.
