The San Ramon City Council is poised to formalize the city's selection for an electric vehicle consulting service as the next step in complying with state requirements that local municipalities shift away from gas-powered vehicles by 2035.

On the table at the council's regular meeting Tuesday is a resolution that would authorize Mayor Dave Hudson to enter into an agreement with Frontier Energy Inc. for consulting services on the electrification process for the city's vehicles.

The services would be provided as part of a fleet electrification study for a two-year term, with a price tag not to exceed $200,000.

Frontier Energy emerged as the city's top choice for services following the consideration of a total of 11 consulting firms that responded to the city's request for qualifications that was first advertised on June 19.

"Frontier Energy, Inc. presented a comprehensive, multi-phased approach, outlining key elements much in line with the City's long-term electrification goals for fleet and infrastructure," Program Director Darin Fitzpatrick wrote in a staff report prepared for the upcoming meeting.

Under state requirements, local municipalities are required to begin the process of moving towards all-electric fleets starting next year. So far, San Ramon has a long way to go, with just six vehicles in their 181-vehicle fleet being electric.

"The City requires Fleet Electrification Consulting Services to develop a comprehensive systemwide assessment of electric vehicle needs for the City, and to recommend a strategy for a multi‐tiered vehicle purchase and replacement process, inclusive of the support facilities required," Fitzpatrick wrote.

The San Ramon City Council is set to meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 12). The agenda is available here.

Consulting services? Sounds like another money grab of taxpayer money.
