A 19-year-old man working construction on a home on El Cerro Boulevard was hospitalized Monday morning after cutting off his hand with a saw, according to authorities.
The man was employed as a construction worker at the home on the 800 block of El Cerro Boulevard, and was engaged in what “looked like some sort of woodworking,” Danville Police Chief Allan Shields said.
According to San Ramon Valley Fire deputy chief Lon Phares, the man was using a miter saw. Phares wasn’t sure exactly how it happened, but the man severed his hand right below his thumb all the way across.
Danville police and the SRVFPD were dispatched at 10:52 a.m. DPD arrived first and applied a tourniquet. The man was taken to the hospital shortly thereafter, said Phares, and last he’d heard the man was at John Muir Medical Center for surgery.
The man was employed by Planned Environments Inc., a local landscaping company, according to the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). The division’s investigation is ongoing and could take up to six months. The firm has no history of worker-safety violations, according to Cal/OSHA.
