San Ramon celebrating its multiculturalism with community event Sunday

Returning for the second consecutive year, San Ramon’s Parks and Community Services Department is throwing a party recognizing the diversity, community and multiculturalism of the San Ramon Valley with its Culture in the Community Celebration this Sunday.

The event will have dozens of booths participants can visit to learn about the diverse cultural groups that call the San Ramon Valley home and check out cultural entertainment that will include Japanese Taiko drumming and American Indian, and traditional Indian, African and Balinese dance demonstrations — to name a few.

For the kids — and kids at heart — a variety of hand crafts, sports demonstrations and games from around the world will be available to watch and participate in at the different booths. In addition to the educational displays and entertainment, participants will have the opportunity to access other cultures through the ethnic foods offered through various food trucks and stands.

Last year’s celebration saw over 1,700 residents attend the event, which had booths representing 26 different world cultures, children’s activities, prizes, a chalk art showcase and even a cricket demonstration.

The deadline has passed for residents interested in hosting a booth that represents their country of origin, but event organizers strongly encourage residents to apply for next year’s planned celebration.

The celebration is free to all and runs from 12-5 p.m. Sunday at the San Ramon Community Center, 12501 Alcosta Blvd.
