A jury will deliberate the facts at a coroner’s inquest Thursday in Martinez to determine how an inmate at the Martinez Detention Facility died nearly a year ago.

James Darryl Cooper, 45, was unresponsive when he was found by a correctional deputy conducting room checks on Jan. 24, 2018. At the time, sheriff’s officials said his death appeared to be medically related, and that Cooper was in custody on charges related to domestic violence.

The inquest will be held at 9 a.m. at the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse at 725 Court St.

Inquests are convened when a person dies and law enforcement is in involved. The inquest will be open to the public although no photographs, video or audio recording will be allowed during the inquest.
