For the past 35 years, thousands of athletes and amateurs in the San Ramon Valley have been running to support their schools, and come Oct. 12 and 13 residents will have the opportunity to do so again when the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation’s annual Run for Education returns.
The primary fundraising activity for the SRVEF — which SRVEF organizers say raises more than $8 million a year for San Ramon Valley Unified School District schools — this year the Run for Education will be held at a new location in the heart of San Ramon next to City Center Bishop Ranch.
“This event comes together each year due to the tremendous support of our community,” said SRVEF Executive Director Vanessa Berastain. “Walk along our course on race day and you will see families laughing and smiling with new and old friends. The positive energy is amazing! We want to thank Chevron for being the presenting sponsor of the Run for Education and being an active participant in the community where the company’s headquarters are located.”
This year’s Run for Education features opportunities for serious and casual runners to test their mettle, with a 5k and 10k run, the mini-run for junior athletes, and the return of the quarter-mile Friendship Run.
Festivities start 10 a.m. Oct. 12 with the second annual Friendship Run, at City Center, 2700 Camino Ramon, San Ramon. Created for student-athletes enrolled in special education courses, the Friendship Run features a fun opportunity for students to walk, roll or run along the outdoor course. The Friendship run costs $20 for competitors to register.
Then at 2 p.m. kids aged two to six are invited to compete in the popular Mini-Run, where all runners will receive a shirt, cape, a medal and post-race treats. Registration for the Mini-Run costs $20 per competitor.
On Oct. 12, City Center will also feature the Health and Wellness Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The action then heats up on Oct. 13, with the 10K timed race, set to start at 8 a.m. at Charlotte Wood Middle School, 600 El Capitan Drive, Danville. Racers will need to pay a $55 registration fee in order to qualify for the competition in advance or $65 on race day.
Next, the 5K race will be held at 8:30 a.m. at City Center Bishop Ranch, competitors can pay $40 to register in advance or $50 on race day.
Runners can register online until Oct. 13.
Once again coinciding with the Run for Education, is the Rotary Club of San Ramon’s annual Auction for Education, which is set to run Nov. 1 through Nov. 9. Last year’s auction raised almost $62,000 for SRVUSD schools and this year has seen more than $40,000 worth of auction items donated by local businesses and community member.s
