The San Ramon City Council has a new second-in-command with the recent announcement that first-term Councilwoman Sabina Zafar has been selected by her colleagues to serve as mayor pro tempore (or vice mayor) for the coming year.
After a vote following her nomination by former vice mayor Scott Perkins during the City Council’s regular meeting on Nov. 26, Zafar will take on the duties and responsibilities of the mayor in the event of Mayor Bill Clarkson’s absence from a council meeting or other such event.
“I am humbled and honored that after being on council for only a year, my fellow council members and mayor unanimously voted to appoint me as vice mayor. This speaks to their trust in my ability to lead in the absence of the mayor,” Zafar said of the appointment.
Every November, the San Ramon City Council selects the mayor pro tempore from among their ranks to serve a one year term. During periods where the mayor pro tempore takes over responsibilities, they possess all of the powers and duties of the mayor.
A tech executive and community volunteer, Zafar was elected to her first term on the City Council in November 2018, becoming the first woman of color to ever serve on the San Ramon council.
As for the goals she hopes to achieve in the coming year, Zafar said: “My goals will be to continue to remain present, transparent and engaged with the community. Work with the Tri-Valley leadership to bring attention to the collective brain power of our citizens to attract jobs and businesses to our communities. And to work with the countywide leadership to solve for the traffic and commute issues that impact our citizens lives everyday.”
