Every year the Community Presbyterian Church (CPC) in Danville sends hundreds of students from throughout the San Ramon Valley on a mission trip to Northern Mexico to build houses for families in very poor conditions.
To help pay the way for students to attend the experience, on Sunday the CPC is holding its annual Mexico Student Mission Project dinner and auction to raise money for the trip.
“Many have never had a chance to serve someone else in a way that really makes a difference,” said Caleb Bonifay, Director of ROCK, CPC’s highschool youth group. “In fact, many of the students going have never really experienced life outside of this community. If you would like to support the students going on this trip, you can help by donating items to the auction or by simply coming to the auction with a generous heart.”
Auction attendees will dine on Mexican food and be given the opportunity to auction on a variety of items including 49er tickets, gift cards to Kick N Mule and Forbes Mill and time at a Tahoe house and Pismo Beach house.
Tickets cost $20 for the dinner, which CPC staff say will be used to help cover the costs of approximately 250 students and more than 75 adults who make the trip in order to help lead and support the students’ efforts.
Interested 8th to 12th grade students can still sign up to attend the trip, which is set to depart on April 4 and return on April 10.
Participating students will travel to Northern Baja California, Mexico near Tijuana, where they will be assigned a variety of tasks that will culminate in the building of a home for a family — who students will get to meet and interact with.
“We build houses for families desperately in need of some security and stability for their own children,” said Bill Haslim, Associate Pastor for Student Ministries. “The work our students do on this project changes the lives of these families forever, but more than that, this experience changes our students’ lives.”
Families can learn more and sign up for the trip online at www.cpcdanville.org/mexico/. Total Cost per Student is $695 — final payments for the trip will be due March 16 — however students in need of a scholarship can apply to receive support.
All ages are welcome to the family friendly Mexico Student Mission Project dinner, which will be held Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the CPC, 222 W El Pintado, door open at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online with CPC staff saying a few will be available at the door.
