From zero to victory in stunning turn-around

Original post made on Sep 6, 2008

Danville Little League 10-11s All-Stars pitcher Nick Bartenetti was concentrating so hard on a foul ball in the Section 3 championship elimination game July 23 that he didn't see the fence until he slammed into it. He could have left the game injured; instead he stayed in and led his team to victory from a seven-run deficit against a home-run-hitting team from Half Moon Bay.

Okay Nicky: answer me this one.

Jill needs three pieces of lumber a total of 27 ft. long for a dog
pen. The second piece has to be 4 ft. longer than the first, and the
third piece has to be 4 ft. longer than the second. How long is each
piece of lumber?

No answer? No baseball for you!

C'mon, Nicky -- it's easy! Shouldn't take this long. What's the formula? If the first piece is "x", then what's the second? The third? And what to they equal all together?

When you're a pro baseball player and I'm your agent -- I'll rob you blind!

Time's up, Nicky -- you suck at this -- and it's a hanging curveball of math questions!

Look, the formula is: x+(x+4)+(x+8)=27

Which becomes 3x+12=27 when you remove the parens, which you can, cuz it's addition.

Subtract 12 from both sides and it's 3x=15. Divide both by 3 and x=5.

So the boards are 5+9+13=27. EEEE-ZZZZZ!

Okay, slugger -- I'll give you the weekend on this one, cuz it's harder -- ask yer Mom for help:

"At the same moment, two trains leave Chicago and New York. They move towards each other with constant speeds. The train from Chicago is moving at speed of 40 miles per hour, and the train from New York is moving at speed of 60 miles per hour. The distance between Chicago and New York is 1000 miles. How long after their departure will they meet?"

Remember -- in real life, ya gotta count past four!

Why am I reminded of this scene from "Grease?"

Principal McGee: "We have pictures of you so-called mooners. And just because the pictures aren't of your faces doesn't mean we can't identify you."

"At this very moment those pictures are on their way to Washington where the FBI has experts in this type of identification. If you turn yourselves in now, you may escape a Federal charge."
