Principal on leave after gun accusation

Original post made on Oct 13, 2009

Monte Vista High School Principal Rebecca Smith has been placed on administrative leave following an anonymous message that she handled a gun in an inappropriate manner in the presence of a student, said School District spokesman Terry Koehne on Tuesday afternoon.

it is about time, that woman has been a tyrant for years and not one person has bothered to address any of her previous egregious behaviors. Perhaps the school district will finally do what should have been done years ago. Termination!!!!!!!!

Mr. Cannon, a Vice President at Los Cerros Middle School, would make an excellent Principal at Monte Vista. It is time for change at MVH.

It is indeed a time for a change in leadership. From financial mismanagement, to harassment of certain types of kids, to finally this incident, the final curtain for this administrator needs to be closed.

What's wrong with that Principal? Is she hard with teenagers? Too much so? How so? (One would think it's good to have somebody strong to deal with teenagers, no?)

I'd like to know more about it, got curious with people going to her neck for an apparently harmless incident. Of course there must be a lot

Enough of the coverups. What's the real story here? Having been a parent in the Danville school system for nine years I am surprised to read of the anger and discontent regarding this person. How are things of seeming great importance not newsworthy? This story makes this appear to be her first offense which apparantly it is not.Enough of the Danville bubble, let's look at reality. This is as bad as the parent in denial of their own child,s misdoings!

I hate to say this but "good riddance" to this principal. I hope this is permanent not just a temporary leave. She was totally unreasonable in regards to a special needs request that my daughter had on behalf of other less fortunate individuals. Rebecca Smith treated my then freshman and myself extremely unreasonably and disrespectfully. We pulled our daughter from the school by the middle of 10th grade. Best decision we ever made. Said daughter is now doing exceptionally well at UCSB and is still doing work to recognize the needs of others less fortunate.

An "anonymous" complaint about handling a BB gun "in an inappropriate manner"! While this should of course be investigated, how about waiting for facts before "appointing" a replacement.

Also, why are people unwilling to identify themselves in their comments? Facts, or even a personal opinion, should not be hidden behind "resident" or other pseudonyms.

Glad to see that the district is not "turning their heads the other way", as they always have when it comes to Becky Smith. She should have been put on administrative leave years ago, when the whole "misappropriation of PTA funds" was discovered. While she has served this community for many years, it has become quite apparent in the last few years that she should contemplate retirement. Becky pushes back on anything that requires "extra work" by her. Programs that would be beneficial to the students at her school, are often pushed aside because she doesn't want to deal with them. Why is it that so many parents had to go to the district 3 years ago to get Becky to put on the very crucial "Every 15 minute" program? Why is it that other High Schools in our district are more innovative in implementing beneficial programs for the students in our community, and Monte Vista doesn't. Look at all the great things that Principal Joe Ianora is doing for San Ramon Valley High School; always looking out for the safety and advancement of his students. Why is it that his school always has at least 100 kids each school year who apply for inter-district transfers, with a majority being Monte-Vista designated students? Why is it that we MVHS parents have to go over to San Ramon High in order to become educated about kids and parenting (i.e. the Healthy Choices/Parent Ed program at SRVHS), because they offer amazing parent lectures that Monte Vista doesn't?
I think it's high time that the District begin to really look into what it best for the students at Monte Vista High, it used to be the most sought-after high school in the district; not any more. We need a new "energy" at MVHS ... IT'S TIME!!!

Jerold - we wish to remain anonymous because we may still have children at the school. As long as we can avoid dealing with the principal we're fine. Much of the teaching staff at the school is outstanding and we have nothing but praise for many of the outstanding teachers who give remarkably of themselves and on a daily basis are making a huge difference in the lives of many students. I personally know of staff members who are scared to go the office when they are called in. That's no way to run a school where your employees fear you too.

Why has the school district not sent an e-mail, or given any notice, to the parents, about what occurred with the principal at MV? The school district has no problem constantly sending us e-mails "requesting"(demanding)money from us for fundraisers, but does not even notify us about an incident involving the principal and a gun? If the district superintendant does not notify all the parents of the facts of this incident by today, a recall drive needs to be implemented to remove the school board and the superintendant immediately.

Yes, Mike Cannon would be a fantastic principal and a huge upgrade from Becky Smith. The district has had many chances to get rid of her, but for some reason they just turn their eyes to her. She got caught stealing from our students, proven that the money was mismused and that she was dishonest and they gave her a little slap on the hand. The students have absolutely no respect for her! Many teachers and most parents don't either! This is your chance SRVUSD! Please do the right thing!

I've had two kids go through MV and both have absolutely hated the school. They're both 4.0 students, hard workers and successful with their extracurricular sports/activities. The problem we've experienced is with teachers who don't teach, resent the kids, and an admistration that is generally unsupportive and intimidating. How about the general policy of not giving tests back - how are our kids going to learn when they don't even know what problems they got wrong? It's really unbelievable. In retrospect, I would have sent my kids to SRVHS which seems to be much more student-friendly. MV is a hornets nest and Becky Smith is the queen bee. All of these msgs are anonymous because parents and kids are afraid of retaliation from teachers. Time for a change.

Becky's dismissal is long overdue. She is a dictator and her philosophy filters down to her teachers. It is not a nice school, the kids and parents we know hate the school and it's only gotten worse over the 9 years our kids have been going through.

I feel our kids are going off to college totally burned out and turned off to learning because of the experience they've had at MV. It doesn't need to be this way. Hire a principal/leader, who genuinely cares about the kids and who conveys that philosophy to the teachers.

As a graduate of MVHS I can personally attest to the comments being made about Principal Smith. It has been hard to watch the deterioration of a once great school. It's time for change. With children headed toward MV in the future, I would seriously have to consider alternatives if she is still there.

I have a child at both schools (SRVHS @ MVHS). Hands down SR is a better school. Everything from logistics, i.e., the selling of dance tickets (MV kids spend lunch hours in line only to be turned away when the bell rings)to the care of our kids. Teachers at MV have made kids feel guilty because they claim they must pay for copying paper handouts with their own(teachers) money. This is not something a student needs to be worried about. Ask any student at SR who Mr. Ianora is, and they'll point him out. MV students don't even know their princioal's name is Rebecca Smith.

While most of you have already put the rope around Ms. Smith's neck, no one is talking about the good things that have come out of their student going to MV and Ms. Smith! How about the thousands that have received excellent educations and can proudly say they are MVHS graduates. My child graduated from MVHS (an average student, played sports and was active in school activities), who went on to be successful and is in the big world with a great job and incredible high school memories. No matter what Ms. Smith was in charge. There are many haters of Ms. Smith (last name begins with a "B"), even the people who's children received scholarships, full rides etc. to excellent colleges. I find it interesting that MVHS's test score continue to be high, MVHS has some of the highest scholastic student athletes in the area. Someone talked about the transfers, how about the transfers in (the total numbers do not seem to change that much). If Ms. Smith has done something improper, I say she should be scolded (like the students) and move on. The last time I checked it was NOT guilty until proven innocent! Let the kids at MVHS worry about their education and not wrapped up in the gossip of the moment like our area LOVES to do!

If you Monte Vista parents had children that hated MV and Becky Smith so much why didn't you transfer? It is because your children got a good education and the colleges are impressed by what comes out of Monte Vista High School. Becky Smith needs to be slapped on the hand and then let's move on and let her do her job....which is to educate our children. It is amazing how these same people can be so ugly to a Principal, but yet find it OK to have alcohol at underage parties, allow your children to drive with kids in their cars, before their year is complete and lastly allow their children to drive drunk...or yes, a little buzzed! Wake up San Ramon Valley!

My son came home yesterday and told me this and I had a hard time believing him. Now I know it is true. I am glad to see the district taking action to investigate this incident. Having children at both MV and SRVHS, I can say that SRVHS is a better overall school and I am sure it is because of the leadership. I think this may be a good time for a change for MV. MV is not a bad school by any means but it could be better. Mostly in the area of communication and providing a well rounded education for all kids not just over achievers.

Having no kids in the school with two kids that graduated in the late 90's from Northgate, I understand high school politics oh too well!

I can see that this entire situation has indeed tainted MVHS. I really feel for the incoming freshmen for next year that may have to endure the politics as stated. Obviously with this principle the school will never move forward. I understand tenure which only serves to hold back improving education.

I am so glad that I am through with all of this, but do feel for the students that are trying to move forward and have a fun and educational high school experience. They will remember these bad experiences for the rest of their lives. Don't we owe them more?

Having worked at MV in the past, an administrative leave is long overdue for Becky Smith. The kids don't know her, the teachers are scared of her and numerous corrupt incidents have occurred under her watch. When your purpose as principal is no longer centered around the kids you should not be there anymore. I would anticipate once this investigation is complete, coupled with the myriad of past mulligans she's had, she will be gone. Who knows, I could be wrong again though. haha To be fair to MV as a school though, it is highly unreasonable to blame MV staff for all your problems. MV is a public school with public school problems, but it is still imo an AMAZING school! From what I witnessed the staff really cared about the kids and went out of their way to help them. The kids themselves were awesome and made the campus an amazing environment to be a part of. Even the majority of parents were really supportive. I would encourage some of you to refrain from making unfair and unwarranted derrogatory remarks about a school the community and staff have worked so hard to establish.

I'm a former Monte Vista parent and if parents have a problem with the administration at any school, going in with a reasonable attitude would really help. Going in screaming and yelling will only alienate. If things are not right at Monte Vista or any school, our District will handle it. Things are always handled but not to everyone's satisfaction, but that's how life goes. There are decisions made that everyone doesn't agree with.

Why don't people like "Republican" above get a life. Everytime something happens in the school district, the only "line" they always say is get rid of the school board and superintendent. They don't ever have anything constructive to say and I am frankly sick and tired of these people. I've lived in this community for over 25 years and these people have done nothing but cause problems and disruption and have spent much of the district's monies and energies with frivolous claims and false allegations and their own political agenda. We have a wonderful school district with dedicated employees and it's sad that a few are always trying to destroy that.

We got lucky and were granted a transfer so our son is now attending SRVH.
Everything that has been written is interesting and mirrors what my son has told me about the principal. Too bad it takes so much to get rid of someone who obviously has some issues. It's amazing that someone thinks she needs a "slap on the hand", the woman took money from the kids! Amazing, yeah slap her on the hand that should do the trick. Also it's not so easy to transfer to another school, we went through all the steps and were completely surprised when it came through.

wow- can't believe the negative assumptions/comments based on an investigation being made on anonymous tip, on an "airsoft" pistol. Why can't parents wait til the facts are in before making such negative comments? Unbelieveable! And we wonder why this generation of kids is so screwed up (me, me , Gotta have the "best" now"!, looks like we can point to the behavior/attitude of their parents!

An "Airsoft" pistol isn't even a BB gun - it's a harmless toy that shoots little clay pellets. Regardless of the other complaints stated above (and I pity anyone who is an administrator of any public entity in the entitled enclave of Danville/Alamo, because a failure to kowtow to the "specialness" of each and every one of our residents is always going to get you backstabbed with a vengeance) I don't see the big deal over the "Airsoft" pistol and what made its handling "inappropriate."

Yes GLC, but you were granted your transfer! Was it because Becky Smith was the Principal, or the teachers were so bad...you forgot to say WHY you left! Gee and we forgot to discuss transfers because of SPORTS, with an underling of staff and students. Little Jimmy or Jane did not get on the team or the level they wanted so...let's transfer...who are you people kidding? Yes, you must go through the motions to transfer, but USUALLY in the end you get what you want...just like always!!

Don't forget, there are 2213 students at MV. The negative comments are coming from a pin size group. If you're unhappy and transferred, that was your choice and hopefully you are now happy and getting what you want. It really isn't anyone's business why you transferred and frankly who cares.

Let the administration deal with their investigation. None of us know the facts and the allegations were annonymously sent, so consider the source.

It is impossible to take many of the above comments seriously, as they appear to come from terribly disgruntled parents who are used to getting it "their way", hence the name "Burger King School" given to Monte Vista because their rich, entitled parents demonstrate that they can always "have it their way". Perhaps the principal has truly made another error, but to condemn her immediately, before the facts are out, tells you something about those who make those premature statements. This is not to defend her, but rather trying to promote the concepts of fairness and justice that is not reflected in many previous statements.

These people put in many hours beyond what the contract requires. This is their time on site. These same people spend countless hours at home and the weekend in order to be prepared to prepare the students for their future success.
Never let it be said that these people don't care. They are deeply involved with the students and it shows when these student are accepted in high level universities.

As a parent with kids at MVHS, I have to agree with so much being said here. If your kids aren't there, or went years ago, you are looking in from an outside perspective. We are not talking about whining or 'burger king people'.

While there are many fabulous teachers at Monte Vista, the administration is difficult to deal with and the attitude conveyed is really a "i don't give a sh*t what you want". I think if you have straight A students who are looking at going to Harvard it may be a great school. But as a parent with average kids who work really hard and struggle with teachers who refuse to use school loop, record grades incorrectly, and a myriad of other issues, I'm just hoping my kids can get into a decent college and aren't turned off learning.

From the information I have from parents whose kids go to SRVHS, I would much rather my kids go there but they are not accepting transfers, so we are out of luck and forced to make the best of the situation. It makes me sad that we live in a community with a lot of economic advantages but the kids and *learning* are not the priority.

And yes, I am anonymous because you can bet that someone at MV is looking at this and if they see a name it will go in that kid's file. I would really love to see the district put in a new principal. I like to think it would benefit everyone.

Becky Smith was an awful principal. As a student I was very involved whether it was my involvement in leadership, or any of the three sports that I played. Seeing this, I was able to see a side of her that most were not able to see. She cares about herself, and herself only. I was always glad to see that a portion of our students' expenses had gone to her 'serious' need for a golf cart, to carry her around campus. I had a great experience at MV through sports, and friends...however there was always Smith...and I can assure you all that I am one of the many that would say this. Bring Aida Glimme back, she is young, smart, and knows MV better than anyone.

Does anyone care that a kid brought a gun to school? Airsoft or otherwise students shouldn't be taking weapons to school. What would the outcome have been if a student had brought the same gun to school in SF or Oakland?

Posted by Parent

Some common ground areas that every logical person should agree with:
(1) School District should have immediately notified all the parents that the principal was on administrative leave due to an investigation into an incident involving some type of air gun.
(2) School District communications with parents on safety issues are more important than anything the District does. Parents should not learn of this from an on-line newspaper. Reporting this would also stop the rumor mill from working overtime;
(3) If a student would have been expelled or suspended from doing on campus with the air gun, what the principal did, than the penalty for the principal should be more severe, as she is an adult with adult obligations and responsibilites.
(4) There needs to be a full investigation into the alleged misappropriations of school funds issues that so many people are constantly refering to, and the results of the investigation need to be shared with the public.(Again, so the rumor mill does not take off)
(5) There are many fantastic teachers, administrators, and students at Monte Visa. However, they can all only reach their full potential if they work together, as a unified team. Based on the numerous complaints about the principal, it seems that change is needed, to have a unified team;
(6) There are schools that have incredible principals, but poor student test scores and poor student success,and there are schools that have terrible principals but have incredible student test scores and student success. Either praising, or blaming, a principal for student test scores, is inappropriate;
(7) Danville parents are, in general, well educated, appropriate, fair, and just, and want what is best for their children. If, based on the totality of circumstances, a new principal is needed for this objective, than it is time for a change at MV.

Yes, there needs to be more info!! The student who had the air gun was brought in to the office, and what happened after that needs to be made very clear. The money question was handled by the district and there are strict rules about how it is spent at every school in the district. If you do your homework, you will find that monies were NEVER taken by ANYONE at MVHS. I would find it interesting to know what other schools had been doing before these new rules were set down...maybe they would have been in the same hot seat. I find it hard to believe that if your student was so unhappy with MV, you did not fix it, your students can and have transferred. Yes, a few areas at MVHS need a little sprucing up, but for the most part it looks pretty darn good. Thank You Rebecca Smith for making MVHS a top school.

MVHS is a truly fantastic school that our community can be very
proud of. It is a California State Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School. MVHS has exceptionally accomplished students, excellent teachers and staff, and great community support. Is is perfect? Heavens, no. But what is accomplished by the administration each year under the extreme pressure of bugetary concerns (and last minute budget cuts), district pressures and parent/student expectations is truly amazing. Let's not trash our wonderful school. Go Mustangs!

Let's look at the facts. Rebecca Smith has been accused of wrongdoings as an administrator in the past, yes. She is currently under investigation for more accusations, yes. Is your student at MVHS getting a great education? YES. Sending hundreds of kids to UC's and Ivy League schools each year, is this really even worth gossip? Like I said before, she in under INVESTIGATION, and I'm sure appropriate measures and punishments will be implemented as deemed fit by the district. I personally as a graduate, am fully in favor of replacement, but is it really worth the whining? There are real problems in this world.

Concerning all the "good deeds" Mrs. Smith has done:

I have a friend who is Sophomore this year, and until a few weeks ago, believed vice principle Mrs. McCarthy was Mrs. Smith. I am a Junior this year, and I have seen Mrs. Smith less than a dozen times in my three years at Monte Vista. If it were not for the great staff and being able to walk to school, I would have already transferred from Monte Vista.

For those it concerns, the gun was not a BB gun like many people believe. The article specifically says "airsoft gun" which is not considered a legal weapon (it fires plastic beads, which can hurt at a close range, but is not likely to cause any serious damage). While this offense (which could be a result of being over worked) may appear minor, Mrs. Smith's lack of appearances at school events has lead me to one conclusion - she cannot handle this job. It is time for her to step down, relax, and let someone capable be principle.

From what my MV student told me, the student had an inflatable gun and Ms Smith pulled a metal airsoft gun out of her desk and then pointed it at the girl. If this is true, why would she even have the gun in her desk...aren't they strictly prohibited? She may have had one because she believes and acts like she is above everything and everyone else. Why should Ms Smith think she will get in trouble, she never has before, even after being found guilty! Yes, she did use funds inappropriately, but since she didn't "personally gain" from it, the district did nothing, even though the money had been raised by and for the senior class.

How strange Current Student, when I started MV my sophomore year, I made it a point to introduce myself to Mrs. Smith, Mrs. McCarthy etc. I knew when school started that Mrs. McCarthy was gone, where have you been? I have seen all of our Asst. Principals (spelled correctly)and Mrs. Smith, Principal (again spelled correctly) at most of the activities at MV including home Football games. If your friend or you have not taken the time to introduce yourselves, then do not complain. We have a great school, and I hope this does not take us off track when it comes to education. Mrs. Smith is well known as a great educator and I agree.

The anger that has been unleashed comes from years of being ignored by Principal Smith and the District. So it is only natural to seize on the opportunity to have one's voice heard. In fact, the District's contempt for the parents is so great, that they don't feel it necessary to notify parents of the leave.

The MV community is generous and committed to providing their kids with the best, but their efforts are too frequently obstructed by Ms. Smith, and there is no opportunity for debate or compromise.

Whatever you think of her qualifications or abilities, a Principal of a public school needs to be responsive to the parents - not necessarily agree on everything, but willing to discuss concerns with an open mind. Clearly, she has failed in this most basic requirement.

I'll withhold my judgement on this incident until all the facts are known. But I condemn the district for their lack of communication about the incident, and for turning a deaf ear to issues raised by the parents.

I will never forget the day my son, an honor roll student who played multiple sports all four years of high school, asked me after his grad ceremony " was that women who spoke, our principal?" I was stunned to learn that was the first time he had ever seen her! He said he knew her name, but no one really ever saw her around campus! The following year, one of my daughters was in the senior class whose funds were misappopriated. Our last child is now a senior and I can honestly say I will be so happy to be done with Monte Vista! Monte Vista has been a good school academically, but school should be a well rounded experience providing more than than just academics. Anything that requires any extra work from the administration is automatically nixed, and if it is something that remotely sounds like it might be fun for the students, it is sure
to be vetoed! I think it is time for some new life and energy at Monte Vista.

This story has turned into many various rumors spreading around the MV campus.I noticed a lack of actual Monte Vista student responses[on this article], which seem like the people who would be MOST effected by the leave of our principle,so I, being a student who's concurrent at MV) and Venture, decided to comment. First off, Becky Smith doesn't even interact with students on a daily basis. My freshman year at MV(2 years ago), no one even saw her come out of her office, EXCEPT to ride around on the school's fancy upper middle class golfcarts.God forbid she has to walk around the school multiple times like us kids. If she doesn't even get to know us kids, how is she going to effectively run the school we go to? There's also many other things to be said about Becky Smith and the missing budget money like someone mentioned above, but I am pretty sure most students are glad to have her leave.

I think its sad that so much hate is directed toward a supposed leader of our children. If she's that bad, let's get her out. However, one must realize that every principal has many enemies and the truth must ultimately be decided by those we have entrusted with that position. Let Becky Smith have her day and may the truth and the best interests of our children prevail.

Attention all whiny parents. The school is about your children, not you. I'm sure you all were not consulted when a principal was hired, just as the details of the investigation are not your business now. If you weren't complaining about irrelevant things constantly, you might be contributing to a better school environment. You might also be raising responsible children who in the future will not follow your obnoxious lead. Get a life.

Bring Aida Glimme back indeed! I, also a Monte Vista student, was in a similar situation to the girl who was threatened with the airsoft gun two years ago. SRVEA got the ACLU to offer to sue her for me, but I didn't have the courage to stand up against her in a court of law. I went to the district, and they apologized and said they would be keeping a closer eye on her but pretty much said they couldn't take any official action unless I was willing to stand up against her in a court of law. Students, teachers, staff members, and former administrators have all filed complaints against her. Maybe now that a story is out that is finally just as strong, if not stronger than mine, I can publically come out about my story.

The issue is not whether MV is a good school, but rather, how much better it could be with good leadership.

When you look at the intangibles like school spirit, MV takes a back-seat to Cal and SRV. Not because of spoiled students, as some would say, but because Ms. Smith's policies repress it.

Anyone who was at homecoming in 2007 will tell you that it was an embarrasement. More so given that parents and students were champing at the bit to make it a great event.

Of course, some will say that school is all about academics, but it's more than that. School spirit is an expression of a healthy student body, and under Ms. Smith, the patient is being drained of its blood.

I am currently a MVHS senior. I have had an overall successful academic/athletic/extra-curricular career at Monte Vista. However, after reading everyone's posts, I have a couple things to say.

Mrs. Smith is a bad principal. Sure, we can have a replacement. But what's the big deal?

To put it simply, many students have not felt that they have been inhibited by our principal. Most of us - and I mean most - do not see how a principal can significantly affect our success. Yes, they run the school and its programs, but come on, these have always been in abundance even when Mrs. Smith reigned 'dictator.' Every year, we have high graduation rates and numerous students going into prestigious institutions. See, most of us just go about our daily lives at school, working accordingly to the classes we take, and upholding our respective responsibilities. And on the most part, we have excellent teachers and excellent academic results. Sorry to be so blunt, but if your kids cannot keep up - that is their own problem, not Mrs. Smith's or any of the teachers'. Just like someone said earlier - a school does not need a good principal in order to have high-achieving students because it all boils down to the level of determination in the students themselves (in which case is consistently aplenty at Monte Vista).

No offense to parents (because parents are, of course, our greatest peoples in life), but please get real. So some people complain how MV doesn't offer any parenting classes whereas SR does. Golly me, but when my kid is in high school, I think I would know how to parent them by then. And come on - when students hear about this, they scoff and comment something along the lines of: "LOL, Mrs. Smith got owned." That's it. Then they go about doing their math homework.

All in all, Mrs. Smith has never played a role in Monte Vista kids. And I realize this is bad, yes, in a sense that it injures MVHS' ego. Of course, a good school -should- have a good principal, but please everyone, do you have no trust in your kids to the point where ridiculous 'high-school politics' will affect them? Really? High-school politics?

Leave it to the administration. Thank you.

cant wait to be threw with mv,
when you get 2500 teenage students together 9 months out of the year obviously a small percentage will participate in those activities. The goal of the administration is to prevent those activities from happening frequently and controlling those violating the rules.

After reading everyone's posts what I would contribute is this: my freshman attended Charlotte Wood for middle school. I now have a sixth grader there. Sande Budde is a wonderful role model who depicts the type of hands-on and extremely visible principal. Every child there knows exactly who she is and she knows many students (and parents) names as well. Granted it's a smaller school but how nice would it be to have someone like that at the helm of MV?

Take it from a guy who just graduated a couple years ago. Becky Smith is not only arguably the most incompetent person I've ever met, but the most dishonest one. During my senior year, when she selected three other students and myself to represent MV at the Bank of America scholarship competition, she told us to make up bogus titles for ourselves or to exaggerate our otherwise minute accomplishments with MV clubs and extracurricular activities. Last year (when I was a freshman in college), she more or less completely plagiarized a previously well-known motivational speech from one of America's most endeared figures. For a school that claims to have a strong and valiant honor code, Monte Vista lacked good examples where they were needed the most: at the top.

Don't get me wrong. Monte Vista was integral in my development; because of the opportunities the school gave me, I was able to succeed academically and extracurricularly, and as a result I'm now at an Ivy League-calibur school. But the administration at MV - not just Becky Smith - is corrupt, inept, and dishonest. Whether the administration played a crucial role in my academic development (and those of others) is irrelevant. The administration is such a flawed representation of the school's ideals and its intelligent and illustrious student body that it desperately needs an overhaul. I would argue that the overthrow of Becky Smith is the right place to start.

How is the behavior of the principal not the business of parents? Get a life??? Huh? Whose business is it? A public school serves the community and, ahem, is funded by our tax dollars. You'd better believe parents have not just a right but an obligation to know how the school operates and whether the principal is a bully.

And I hope parent who suggested the principal's alleged behavior is an example of a good lesson simply didn't think this through. It's an abuse of power and nothing less. Yes, perhaps the woman had a bad day and used poor judgment. But it was a bad enough day and poor enough judgment that she shouldn't be invited back to try again.

Monte Vista has been a respectable school for years. Our high AP scores continue to reflect the school's ability to prepare students well, regardless of the teacher's ability to teach and continues to demonstrate how we as a student body can be independent of the teachers.

Regardless of that side note, Becky Smith does not really play an active role in administration. Of course the student body sees her around the campus, but over my past four years, I only interacted with her once (and that is when I was talking to my counselor and she interrupted). Still, we cannot put all the blame on Becky Smith. If students want to see change in the school, they as a student body must ask for it. For example, when security and safety became an issue after "assault" attacks, the school administration proposed two separate lunch periods without hearing a voice from the student body. The Class Of 2009 united together and we let our voice be heard by saying that we did not want two lunches. The school administration acknowledged our opinion and knew that we did not want this to happen. Clearly, if the community and the student body want change, let the school know your opinion...because if you do not, then nobody will know about it.

I went to Monte Vista and I will admit that there were times Mrs. Smith was not my favorite principal. But through the years I got to see her in different environments and I liked her a lot more. She obviously made a mistake and obviously isn't perfect, but it's extremely rude and immature to call her a tyrant. Get over yourself and have some respect and pity for her. She is not a bad person, she is not an evil person, she just didn't make a good choice.

This event is the just the tip of the iceburg. Everyone who has ever had an issue with her; teachers, parents, students, etc... need to come forward and oust this woman. For all of those who ask why has Becky Smith been allowed to stay at MVH? A spouse wealthy enough to hire great attorneys, and some friends in high places. The truth will eventually come out about who is protecting this woman. But perhaps looking at the political candidate for the 10th Congressional District may be a good place to start.

As a senior at Monte Vista and a member of the Pricipal's Advisory board, I have had to deal with Mrs. Smith countless times. Everytime I have had an encounter, it is awkward and unproductive. It is irrelevant about the transfers, and personal feelings of kids at the school because it happens everywhere, and take into consideration that tons of Stone Valley kids go to SR due to location when they are supposed to go to MV.

She didn't just inappropriately handle an airsoft gun, she PUT IT TO THE HEAD OF THE STUDENT. Why did she do this? All because the student got suspended for a total bogus reason right before apps are due.

We DO know whe she is. She isn't stranger to our school's community unless you choose to be ignorant. I too have had my fair share of dealing with the admins at my middle school, and at Monte Vista for less than stellar reasons, and if anything, I can say that despite her unproductive work at school, and her ego getting in the way of positive steps for our school, she treated me as a human being, unlike her assitant pricipals of previous years. I am not trying to defend her actions, as much as do my best to give the most accurate picture of a woman who is under intense scruitney, all by her own means.

I do not like her as a pricipal just because issues that are important to me and other members of our school are ignored due to their academic "unimportance".

And as a side note,
I 100% agree with the statement made about Burgman. He says he wants our school to be power houses in every sport, but he has done NOTHING to help. But he has done EVERYTHING TO DETREIMENT programs other than football, or basketball. He rejects overly qualified coaches for a reson that "You [me] wouldn't understand."

As a student at Monte Vista High School, I find much of the posts on this article offensive. To the parents, who have not experienced first hand the supposed "great" education your children are receiving: let me say this. Before you cast MVHS in the gutter, let me remind you that there are 2700 students at MVHS; there is ONE principal. Please do not drag the name of my school through the gutter because of one woman, regardless of her actions. Let Mrs. Smith stand alone in her possible punishment or certain infamy. The students at Monte Vista have moved on from this and are continuing to thrive - we will not let administration issues tamper with our education. And we will not let your petty comments affect our education either.

I work at Monte Vista.
The student brought in, a blow up, very obvious fake gun. When she was taken to Becky Smith's office, Becky pulled out a very realistic looking gun from her desk, and pointed it at the girls head.
As that was going to teach her a lesson? If a student had done that, they would be expelled!

Over the years, the district has had so many complaints about Becky Smith, that it is sickening!

The reason I don't give my name like everyone else, we'll be fired! I am so thankful just to have a job.

Monte Vista has great students! Most of the staff is great, there are some that will do anything for Becky, but I won't. I do my job and I do it well!
It was great to see that Kathy McCarthy was moved to a different school, to have those two split up was a huge step! You all must wonder why so many of the VP's have left Monte Vista...answer is Becky Smith, she made life miserable for them.

Even with all the rumors and drama this past week, it has been so nice at Monte Vista not having Becky around.

She's nothing but a school yard bully trying to intimidate everyone. She did succeed with some, but I'm happy to say... NOT ME!

When you are horrible to people in your lifetime...it will come back around and bite you in the a**. Look who finally got bit in the a**, Becky Smith!

I am a senior at Monte Vista High School. As a student who has attended multiple schools in multiple states I can safely that this is the worst administration I have seen. They are intimidating and standoffish to tdhe students that they deal with. It was only last year that they change the homecoming dance to saturday evening, previously it was on a friday and none of the football players were able to attend. Becky Smith is the ring leader of this negative school atmosphere. This recent incident is unacceptable but thats just the tip of the iceburg. Not once have I even seen Mrs.Smith interact with a student of Monte Vista or make any effort to make Monte Vista a warm and welcoming place. In fact I hardly ever seen her on campus. I've never heard her on the intercom in any school announcements nor have I seen her at any school functions. In fact I cant recall I time where I've even heard her speak. Like I said I'm a senior so theres not much a change in a administration could do for me. But for the underclassmen's sake, I think it would be beneficial to terminate Becky Smith and rebuild the administration from the ground up.

I have been hearing complaints about Becky Smith for years. From parents, students, alums and other members of the MV administration. She is incredibly disrespectful to EVERYONE and so very condescending to most. She is particularly offensive to students with special needs and I have witnessed her mock them and mimic ticks/behaviors.

I have heard stories of her tormenting fellow administrators just to "show them who's boss." There was a particularly great dean of discipline a few years back that she just tormented - first by moving the copy machine into his office so he could never shut the door or have to interrupt discipline meetings because teachers had to make copies, moved him into a closet in the teacher's lounge and lastly into another closet in the student cafeteria - how appropriate to have discipline meetings there, right?!

For years people have complained to the district and for years nothing has happened. The big question from everyone is "what does she have and on whom that keeps her in her position?" No one knows, but whatever it is, I hope it doesn't help her to get back to Monte Vista. Enough is enough.

Posted by Reader, a resident of the Walnut Creek neighborhood:

The article does not state the origin of the gun. Any comments regarding its origin or its use by the principal are pure speculation. Basically, none of us know anything about what happened. We are all just trigger happy. No pun intended.

Agreeing with this statement completely. Getting worked up over lack of proof in any direction, only hearsay, is both silly and pointless. While it is said Mrs. Smith is rarely seen at school events, this is because those attending are focused on said event, not at the teachers or crowd. Mrs. Smith does attend these events, most of the football games i've attended i have seen her.

Another point - Picking out a new principal is not something we decide. Pre-selecting one is a futile gesture.

Relax and wait for a complete story, Parents, Students, and Teachers.

From this article, I don't know what Becky Smith did or didn't do. I see no comments from eye witnesses. I can't see nor did your reporter question the nameless faceless person who accused her on an internet form. Nonetheless, the Danville Express has placed her indefensibly in a position open to anonymous public ridicule. My Mom would say "shame on you!"

The School Board has acted appropriately by investigating and I will await the results before forming my own opinion about this incident. What if this whole thing turns out to be a prank? How will you make it up to her?

I have always believed that journalistic responsibility goes beyond reporting the facts to discover and illuminate the truth. Nothing anybody has said about Becky Smith in this comments section is substantiated and few comments are signed by their nameless faceless authors, but here they are, appended to this provacative article. From my perspective the Danville Express has actively facilitated a character assassination. I agree with Mom.

I have always held your publication in high regard. But I think this forum has devolved journalism to the same level as an internet chat room. You can and you should strive to do better for the community of Danville, your advertisers and your readers.

The District's communication is too little, too late. Ms. Smith holds a public position and the district owed a timely statement to the parent's and students, even if details were omitted.

Like any official, a principal should be accountible to her stakeholders. The dissatisfaction with Ms. Smith has been well known for some time. This situation has been allowed to persist because the District and Board have not been accountible to the community.

Just think that if this article didn't appear, the incident would have been completely buried! We need a change, not only of the principal, but at the Board level, as well. Throw the bums out!

I'm surprised to see such harsh consequences. But if you're holding the children to the same level, then the adults should be as well, even the principal!
Everyone knows these toy guns shouldn't be at school and for the principle to be playing with it in an incorrect manner is poor judgment, even if it was jokingly

I also feel the young ladie involved needs to learn to zip her lip. Think about the old telephone game, each time people speak, the story changes! I have difficulty thinking that a great school like MVHS, with all of it's high test scores, and the high number of students that have been sucessful after they graduated, that they were not led by a good leader! Interesting that the people who complain that they never see Mrs. Smith and that she never attends games and events (which is untrue), are the same people that would complain if she were around too much! What none of us really knows are the facts of what happened. Until then Mrs. Smith is innocent until proven guilty. Remember, we live in a democracy. This verbal lynching by anonymous bloggers is shameful.

While I do not always support the principal and her policies, I have worked through some very difficult situations with her and I have always found her to be knowledgeable and respectful.

Monte Vista is a great school. San Ramon is a great school. Both schools have strengths and weaknesses. We are blessed to have these two wonderful high schools to choose from. How about sharing some best practices between the schools rather than sniping about who is better? Until we get past this ridiculous petty competition, we will not be able to address the important issues that face our students every day. I can just see the San Ramon parents jumping with glee at our sad event. That is a travesty.

Regardless of the outcome of this situation, Mrs. Smith has been the head of an extremely successful high school, not just with academics, but with athletics, speech & debate, robotics, culinary, amazing dance and music programs and some wonderful electives like intro to law, sports medicine and architectural drawing. While she does not deserve all the credit for the amazing accomplishments of our school, I am convinced she was a part of its success.

Let's let Steve Enoch do his job and determine the best solution in a timely manner. Right now we are in a pretty dire predicament with three brand new vice principals and an interim principal who has come out of retirement. I still love Monte Vista and I have only one thing left to say, "GO MUSTANGS!"

now that it has been said that she pointed a weapon at a student she most likely will not come back to the school, that is very extreme thing to say, if its true well then she'll get wats coming to her, if its not than we lost a principle that no one liked, but threw sum1 out unfairly, i dont like her, i hate her
but im a realist, i will b shocked if i look out the window of my first period in june and see any of her expensive cars parked out there

I know about some of these air gun. Some of them are made of metal and very realistic looking. I suspect that if someone looked up the laws about replicas or even look alike air guns we would discover that brandishing them is quite illegal.

Laurie, "I can just see the San Ramon parents jumping with glee at our sad event. That is a travesty."???? I've read all of the comments on this site since this article was posted and I have seen nothing that would justify this and your accusation of a petty competition. The real travesty is that you would actually waste your time writing such a ridiculous comment!

If the principal gets punished and she is fired, then what would be fair?? The student who started all this should be expelled. How about an eye for an eye.

The Chicago mobster, Al Capone did many illegal things. But it was tax evasion that finally allowed the Feds to arrest him and put him away.

How this relates to Ms. Smith? Over her tenure, there are too many complaints about problems that were never addressed, or there was never enough evidence of any wrong doing. This is not saying she is a criminal or anything. But there have been efforts in the past to remove her that failed. Maybe a fake gun will finally force the Administration to change. The fake gun is to Ms. Smith as tax evasion was to Capone.

I do not believe Ms. Smith has ever done anything illegal. It’s her lack of doing that I fault her. She is a not criminal, or a bad person, just not a good Principal for Monte Vista. There are many great students at Monte Vista that would do just as good in any school or environment. Ms. Smith is fortunate to be at a community where the parents are as involved, and have the high expectations of their children. If she was at a school located at a less affluent area where the parents don’t have the time or resources, she would easily be exposed. The success at Monte Vista is primarily due to the rest of the school staff, the high achieving students, and the involved parents. Good school… just think about how much better it could be.

To the District: Take this opportunity to make a change. Help make a great school even better. Many of us parents remember High School to be more that Grades and Football. I want my child to be thankful he/she went to went to Monte Vista, not to be thankful he/she is out of Monte Vista.

These past 4 years have been painful for my child under the oppression of this tyrant! This school has no school spirit, caters to the AP & Honors students and kids that fall into the average range are considered stupid.I got news for you GPA snobs - the average kids get into college too. And as far as the way the MVHS parents were notified A WEEK LATER! The same thing happend last month with some perv on the trail, Becky didn't notify us until a week later! Uh, last time I checked my kid is still a minor and IT IS MY BUSINESS WHAT GOES ON AT SHCOOL OR NEAR IT! And oh yes, I expect to be notified THAT DAY! There is no excuse for not informing the parents to this. Smells like a cover up...........just one more to add to her list. The school district is getting really good at that. I did not particularly like the way the letter was written from the district when I finally got it a week later. I can just tell this will get swept under the rug like the monies thing. By the way did we the parent/tax payers ever get a definite resolution to the monies thing....that just kind of disapeared just like this will. Wait and see......I say recall them all!!!

For Heaven's Sake! Nobody even knows what happened, and they are convicting her. Doesn't it occur to anybody that some students might have gotten in trouble and retaliated by making the anonymous call? I am so sick and tired of parents in this community thinking that their little sweethearts can do no wrong.

All of the talk about the various Middle School and Elementary School Principals that would do a better job is humorous. The jobs are not even comparable.

As much as many of you may not like Rebecca Smith, she works hard. Very, very hard.

Please people. Wait for the facts before convicting her.

My own children have received excellent educations from Monte Vista. It is not up to the school's to parent the kids. That is up to the parents.

Hello Linda.... The initial complaint about what happened came from admin.who thought it should be repoted. Kids do screw up, but they also often tell the truth. I guess you think if they are a kid they are probably making it up! So old school. There will always be those who walk around with eyes closed, or would never dare open their mouth. Open them up there is clearly an issue by the response on this board.

I agree with you she is innocent until proven guilty BUT we are all 99% sure she has done this. Now for all of you saying we should punish the CHILDREN for "starting" this rumor. I'm sorry but you have no intelligent at all. Someone would not just go and start a rumor like this and if so then there wouldnt be this great law case. There are video cameras in the teachers offices too i believe (not positive.)

In addition the last administrators (who were recently fired, Mccarthy Hoadzic/Glimme, Brady-he was the only good administrator in my opinion) along with mrs. Smith have this opinion that "we are superior to all the children at this school." You know that the administrators DO NOT believe in innocent until proven guilty. If a teacher says you are cheating and are called in, you cant even plead your case they wont care. Whatever they say go. They have no respect at all for anyone. Along with that there has been some issues between me and Mrs. Smith where i was COMPLETELY innocent and she tried to expel me and stated things such as "You are so lucky to be here you brat, But you know what you will NEVER get into college and become homeless on the street. You think mommy and daddy will help you then?". Luckily for my 4.8 GPA average and my parents bringing in the District smith QUICKLY backed off. Point is, administrators yes you guys have authority but you cant act like this. Its not fair to the students. And honestly, after the "money scandal" and 5 out of 6 administrators got fired last year I though she would at least be grateful to have her job.

One more thing- Did you know half the people didnt even know she existed? She is NEVER out at lunch nor attends rallys. In the past when I had a principle or vice principle for the matter of the fact, they were ALWAYS involved with everything to get the kids to like them. Mrs. Smith never created that environment.

Last year, I attended Monte Vista High School. I had transferred as a junior from another high school outside of the area and, from setting foot on campus, I had warned repeatedly by a close friend who attended SRV that if I reported ANYTHING to the administration, nothing would be done. About half way into the first semester, I put that to the test when a sandwich was thrown at me. I reported to the main office that they had thrown food at me, I was offended, and it wasn't in a jokingly manner either. They claimed they would take care of it and they were sorry. They threw food at me again the following week and then, from that point on, I just took an alternate route to get to where I ate lunch. Why did it take a week for the administration to say something? And did they even say anything? I was too scared to go to the administration again and question them, so I didn't.

Forgive me if this may seem a little personal, I don't know all the facts. This is pure speculation. But, the entire school year at Monte Vista of last year, I seldom saw Becky Smith. I don't recall ever seeing her at a rally. If she was, she wasn't participating or involving herself. Within the first few weeks of school at San Ramon Valley High, I've gotten to know (and see walking around campus quite freqeuntly socializing with students) Mr. Ianora. He's a great man and he's directly involved in everything that goes on on-campus. No student (or teacher from what I've heard) should feel intimidated by the Principal and administration. They also shouldn't not know who he or she is. I know students who fear her, because she's verbally threatened them. I know students (who, like me) had NO idea who she was. I really didn't know her. The only things I heard were things that students said about her, which, let me tell you, weren't exactly positive. Whenever I did see Becky Smith, she was almost always on (what looked like) a luxury, high-speed golfcart. It's great to know that the money that's being put into that school is being used to buy administrators unnecessary golfcarts that should be solely used for janitorial purposes.

All last year, I applied for transfers to San Ramon Valley High School, but was rejected until I applied for the year of 2010 in January. My name was picked in a lottery.

I think what Rebecca Smith has done is completely inappropriate and from what I've read, she isn't the most responsible woman. Waving a gun (regardless WHATEVER kind of gun it is) in front of a student's face or using it in any way inappropriately shows that she is compeltely incapable of handling a leadership job like Principal of a High School. Think of the kind of example that she's setting for students by doing things like that.

I haven't gotten the chance to read all of the comments about this yet, but I'm a student at SRVHS and (I am unable to say names) I have heard teachers and others talking about how Becky Smith and the administration at Monte Vista is irresponsible and, as they put it, "the most disliked administration by the students and fellow teachers in the district."

I hope something is done about Rebecca Smith and a more favorable person is chosen.

Oh please, can we stop the hyperbole? The vice principals were not fired - 2 left the district on their own accord, and one is just at another school. That's not fired.

Mrs. Smith was at many events - maybe not all, but definitely has been to some - I've seen her. And so what? I don't personally know the mayor of my town, but that doesn't mean that person isn't doing a good job. So not every one of the well over 2000 students is going to know her.

Every person has some things they do well and some things that could be improved (and that includes our precious children!) Nobody could be in her position if they weren't doing some things well.

And no, we don't know EXACTLY what happened.

all i can say is get over it. this is blowing up into a MUCH bigger thing then necessary. most of the students and parents do not know mrs.smith and i do and she is a nice woman. as for drugs and what not it's an issue at all high schools no matter where your kids go so calm down. as of now you are all just tearing down the reputation of MVHS which is actually an incredible school not only academically but socially as well if you are willing to put yourself out there. as for MVHS PARENT 4TH YEAR the school does have school spirit and if your student doesn't that is entirely their fault because MVHS leadership does a ridiculous amount of things for MVHS to promote spirit but if kids don't want to participate that is their problem. i was involved in everything at MVHS from leadership to clubs to sports and i took AP/Honors classes and managed a nice social life and if your kids can't handle it that is their fault and problem so they can not blame anyone but themselves.

Principal Smith is stupid. Her administrative abilities were questionable. She took from the arts and sciences programs, the languages, the drama classes, and built a gym that was creaky, leaky, and broken.

2 million dollars towards a new football field, but not enough to fund the public speaking department? Elimination of the Chinese Language program? Highly qualified faculty forced out due to 'controversy?' Pink slips for the teachers before the semester ends? Hidden windfalls of cash?

Educational equity is at an all time low; and yet we have this mockery of an admin at MV. She would have NO chance to survive in tougher school districts. MVHS is like one of her hundred thousand dollar cars; rich, flush with the best minds of the county, and some of the best faculty in the East Bay. Imagine if she was at the helm of one of the charter schools in Oakland?

She backstabbed numerous faculty members in order to gain her position. Making promises and then breaking then. Our best and our finest instructors, Kamin, Roster, men and women who truly touched the lives of students by challenging them utilizing methods not found in the traditional scheme.

To some, this may be a dark day, To those who knew the reign of Mrs. Becky Smith, if it was to end, it would not have ended sooner. Her incompetence knew no boundaries.

We salute you, oh Captain, for throwing yourself off your own plank. May your fall to rock bottom be a happy one.

ON "THE INCIDENT"
Is this a storm in a teacup or what? I put out my hand and feel droplets of liquid but, without chemical analysis, cannot tell if it is really rain or just flecks of spittle from rabid lips. Presumably time and lab tests will tell, in the meantime I'm going to assume innocence until proven guilty.

ON MV v SRVHS - GO MUSTANGS (jk)
Yes, SRVHS is a great school and yes, it has a very visible principal, but I cannot say with any certainty how much of this is cause and effect. Monte Vista's principal may be invisible, by some accounts, but they are still very effective based on most academic and sporting metrics, and the principal should get some credit for that.

NO GLOATING
Lastly, I may be an (OK ex) SRVHS parent but you won't hear me gloating about this MV muck raking; IMO the student motivation gained from our schools' fierce but friendly cross town rivalry is one of our more significant assets. GO SRMVHS!!

To 09Student, who determines what exactly is beneficial anyway. Is it money given to the arts and sciences? Or is it funneled to the arms race that is High School Sports? Is it fair that languages had to be eliminated in the past?

It seems to me that you're a recent student. Do you have any idea about the administration of this school? Indeed, money used for 'beneficial' Beneficial can be another key word for --> embezzlement, encroachment. A 100,000$ car is beneficial. Money for the growth of the humanities and arts is essential.

Guessing that you're either a current student or a recent graduate, I'm saddened, and indeed, dismayed to see such a lack of commitment to civil service and knowledge about his or her own school. Take some pride in your school and learn about positive administrative procedure, instead of the divisive practices that Smith has practiced.

If you do not like J. Antoon, choose C. Lum, he is highly qualified with a JD, he will know how to get out of trouble, and then you do not have to pay attorney fees. He is young and highly motivated. And he is not a money stealer. He is also in the California BAR.

Can someone tell me where we can check the public record of this report?

Becky Smith has gotten away with so many things, why didn't she get away with this incident. How could an anonymous call, make someone go on administrative leave. Does she have a license to carry a fire arm in California, maybe she does, we don't know the whole enchilada.

It is important to note that Becky Smith not only rides on the coattails of a large high achieving asian population academically. She is punitive to students that work hard for grades by making it a rule that if you do not pass the star tests regardless of your grades you are not allowed on the honor roll. I dont buy the explanation that the students will take this as a joke if she doesn'
t impose serious repurcussions to not passing. Some kids are not good at test-taking and to me the idea of a student that may be in lower level classes and still has to take a grade level tests may not be able to pass is understandable. The stress and embarrassment these students encounter when they go to collect their honor roll certificate and find out they aren't getting one is sad.

Pointing a toy gun (or any weapon, simulated or real) at a student in your office is obvious grounds for suspension, no matter how much of a learning exercise it can be.

Imagine the moral implications if she has a firearms license. Oh no! Now if I have a firearms license, I can point toy guns at students in my office, I can call it okay. What if you have a firearms license do it? I can't certainly accuse of being guilty of threatening your children.

Oh wait: Carrying Firearms (loaded or unloaded) are ILLEGAL ON STATE PROPERTY.

Open carry of loaded firearms in public is generally prohibited except in unincorporated areas where the county has not made open carry illegal or where the discharge of firearms is not prohibited. Carrying of an unloaded, unconcealed firearm in plain sight is not prohibited except in areas otherwise prohibiting the carry of firearms under state or federal law, such as school zones, post offices, government buildings, state and national parks, "sterile" areas controlled by security screenings, etc.

I wonder what the Principal's Office at MVHS is?

So, how about this anonymous caller? Surely you've visited the school before and know the definite layout of the administrative building. To enter the Principal's office, you have to pass through several insular layers of secretaries, working staff, and other vice-principals. As a result --> any person, be they student, teacher on break, administrative assistant making photocopies, could clearly see Mrs. Smith point the offending weapon at the student. And those with any moral turpitude whatsoever would call her out on it. There are most likely witnesses, and that Smith is just trying to bully them from testifying. The retributive property is at work, and we hope for the safety of the brave witness.

My child had a hard time with the indecent behavior by adults that filtered down. He decided to change schools and is a senor doing very well with a lot of choices. The difference that a good leader brings to teachers and students is crazy. By son would have burnt, instead he is ready for colllege and has many choices. Becky Smith made a speech for paents at Los Cerros Middle School while our present seniors were in the 8th grade. This waa a most disappointing speech. She explained that if you do not get what you want,"
"Find The Back Door" If your childs teacher doesn't respond qkuickly enough, "cc her and that will wake the teacher up"
. Also, she only gets the best teachers and if the Front door doesn'
t work, there is always a backdoor. My favorite was when she said she does everything to provide "gamesmanship". WTH, I may have made that up. I have since then had a very strange feeling about her. There were other more time consuming and wordier concerns I decided to spare you.

Our children only follow the adults in authority!! Why is everything so exclusive? The most successful program in all of MVHS is Speech and Debate which is avialable to the whole student body. It is the only thing in the whole school that anybody can participate in. I am curious if the administration or in particular Becky Smith ever noticed this. Being Inclusive instead of exclusive will benifit the whole school.

As far as the completely harsh comments I think that Rebecah Smith did a good job helping me through schooling. I think she has alot on her plate ESPECIALLY with handling violence and gun use....taking that a student that was going to MV...well KILLED someone. Although the whole situation didn't need to occur in the way it did, maybe that girl NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON. Without her as a principal while i was attending MV, i would have had a terrible 4 years. The money spending...all MV invests money into is GOLF CARTS and new ARCHES to the stadium.

Do you really really think you are entitled to know personnel matters before they are even investigated? You watch too much tabloid TV. Cover up? What would be the point? Do you think the school system wants things like this within its structure? Tax dollars? We all pay them. The annual amount for measure C is less than you all pay in one month to your landscaper, housekeeper, country club or HOA. Or probably any of your bills. Divide that amount by number of schools. Then by number of employees. Then by number of school days. You are getting a very good deal. You've probably used up what you've paid out a hundred times over. Do you get details of every investigation of every employee in stockholder reports? Be real. It's being investigated. What more can you expect at this point? Do you know what drugs your kids are selling? You should pay more attention to that.

I'm a parent of a senior at MVHS and a Danville resident for 14 years. It amazes me how supposedly "highly educated" people describe the principal as a tyrant or dictator rather then comment on her work. We can assess her work to be incompetent, ineffective, or inefficient but let's not judge her as a peron.

There are more pressing issues with which, we parents must concern ourselves. If you don't know what drugs your kids could be taking from your medicine cabinet, if you spoil your kids rotten with the most expensive flashy cars and handbags, if you spend less than 1 hour at the dinner table with your high schooler each night, deal with your issues first and let the district deal with Mrs. Smith.

(1)Congrats to the Danville Weekly for scooping all the other so-called real newspapers by two days, for being the first to publicize this story about the MV Principal. I will now consult the Danville Weekly as my primary source of local news.
(2) Mike Cannon, the VP at Los Cerros, would make a fantasic principal at MV. Have seen him interact with students, parents, teachers, and he has the respect of all he deals with. I have also heard many other parents say the same thing about him. I urge the School Board to start listening to the parents, and consider Mike Cannon for the principal at MV.

Come on people lets wait until the facts are in before pasing judgement. Otherwise we run the risk of being a lynch mob!

The school district made a mistake when they did no notify the parents as soon as the Ms Smith was suspended. The lack of transparency creates an environment that screams cover-up. This is a public school, the district has a primary responsibility to the public, not to their own organization. For those who are scornfully saying that the parents have no need to worry their pretty little heads about this, the adults/professionals will take care of it, how dare you! This is not a spoiled rich kid response. In my old district, San Leandro, I can assure you that this situation would have cause an outpouring of parental concern. My old elementary school removed a principal for significantly less due to parental pressure. That was in a district that was very diverse and not very rich. Parents have to keep watch on the schools. That is part and parcel of being a parent and a citizen. Citizens/parents should not simply be included by the schools when they want more money.

I am amazed. In what is supposed to be a highly educated community, no one seems to understand what the job is of a High School Administrator. How many Presidents of these big Corporations in this area, have lunch with their employees? Not many. They are usually in their office running a company. Why do most people not see Becky Smith all over campus? Because she is working.

Educate yourselves before passing judgment and appearing to be ignorant!

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Teachers and Administrators have lost nearly all ability to discipline and teach these students to be good people. I am not for a moment saying that it would be OK for anybody to point a gun at a student, but let's get the facts before jumping on this bandwagon of ignorance.

I think this discussion board can be essentially broken into two parts.
Those who believe the school/district is an internal organization which should be allowed to operated without any input from parents/the community except when they want money.

The second group which believes the school/district as a PUBLIC entity is accountable to the public.

I don't actually care if any one likes or dislikes Ms Smith. What bothers me about this situation is that it was not reported in a timely fashion. This allowed the situation to fester, which is not good. Secondly, the behavior noted by Ms Smith would have any employee walked out the door by security, if not arrested, in any company I have worked for.

im a junior at monte vista, smith is a minor flaw in the monte vista faculty, the teachers (except a couple) are all dedicated, nice, and feel some emotions toward the admins. To enlighten those that dont know the truth, it wasnt even a airsoft gun, it was an inflatable pistol, thats all im saying. Smith illegally using student funds to pay for her golf cart so she doesnt have to waddle her way across campus is just pathetic. I think its time for a replace ment, last week i wasnt even allowed to go to my own homecoming, because id bought my ticket off a friend, wheres the justice in that? fyi it was a completely legitimate ticket. i dont understand where all these propositions of mr cannon are coming from? he already has a good job, you like him, so keep him.

Agree 100% with Becky Jean...Glad you part of our Danville community...Our gain is San Leandro's loss. You have great common sense, and have accurately broken down this issue to it's core.

Linda

You are mistaken if you think CEOs just sit in their offices running thier corporation's business. The best are very close to thier executives and thier employees. I have worked for two Fortune 50 companies and saw my CEO with employees (yes, even in the cafeteria) on a regular basis. That aside this is not a corporation. It is an institute of learning. Connectivity to your teachers and the student population is critical to ensure thier needs are being understood. Assumption and arrogance are two traits that will not only destroy a leader but also the business or in this case school they run.

As boring as I remember Danville, it is pretty entertaining, that it seems the entire neighborhood has gathered around a central incident, in regards to the High school! A school that in its original conception was supposed to be temporary. Somehow this temporary school became permanent, successful, a leader in sports, in education, and overall “bubble” experience (a good thing in my opinion), has a wonderful community that cares. This is one great thing about Danville. As for Judging Becky Smith, whether or not she is responsible for pointing an air soft gun at a student. I think it is hilarious if she had the balls to do that, and I would bet the little shit deserved the whole thing if she did or it was no big deal and meant as a joke of sorts, the question regardless of opinion however remains the same, did she do it, and if so does it justify her being discharged? A person that has seen a school through some epic times, and brought about years of the finest education California as a state at the public school level has to offer, we must give credit where credit is due. Should she be let go? No. I think she should be reprimanded, punished, if it is true, but a person that has done more to benefit the community than upset the harmony, should be kept to continue the good. It makes sense to allow something that works well in a time when most everything else is struggling to survive, to live out the rest of it’s productive relationship would be wise. However this in turn could be that perfect moment that the school board, and the community have been waiting for, to put out some fresh blood, to take the beating from the Danville parents, and the low shots constantly evident and brought upon by the smart yet rambunctious youth. Good luck whoever gets the job, everyone should know there is no way in hell I envy that position.

"Teachers and Administrators have lost nearly all ability to discipline and teach these students to be good people."

That is a very unfair blanket statement about the teachers in this district. Do not use the alleged mistake of an administrator to judge every person in this district who has dedicated their careers to the success and education of the next generation. You clearly have NO perspective about the great students in this district. Go live and work in Oakland, LA, SF, or Concord for a year then come back and tell me how awful the students of the Diablo Valley really are.

Back off!
