Although Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton), facing no opposition for the Democrat Party nomination for election to a third term in office, left town at 7 a.m. yesterday to return to Washington, it was quite a different story for the Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination.

For David Harmer. “it was a happy night,” an exuberant Harmer said.

It doesn’t hurt when election returns as of midnight showed Harmer with 35.2 percent of the vote compared to his closest competitor, San Joaquin County farmer and wine-grape grower Brad Goerhing, with 28.1 percent of the vote. Late Tuesday night, with 28 percent of all precincts counted, Harmer enjoyed a commanding nine-point lead over Goehring and two other GOP candidates running for the 11th Congressional District seat in the House of Representatives.

“The Harmer family will go to bed tonight feeling good,” Harmer, at his election night party at a private residence in Pleasanton, told his supporters and volunteers. Harmer added that he would not declare himself a winner until all of the votes were counted.

The mood at Harmer’s party was upbeat, with a tinge of victorious momentum and excitement emanating throughout the evening at the spacious home situated in the Pleasanton hills. More than 200 friends, supporters and volunteers were there to cheer on Harmer.

And the momentum for Harmer’s campaign has been there all along, said his father, John Harmer, the former lieutenant governor of California from 1974 to 1975 under then-Gov. Ronald Reagan.

“There is chemistry here with this campaign, and that chemistry is here tonight,” the senior Harmer said. “There is this great momentum that David has had from the beginning. It starts with the supporters and the volunteers, who have been instrumental in this campaign.

Among the four GOP candidates running for the 11th Congressional District seat, recent tracking polls showed the San Ramon attorney was leading his three Republican rivals, all of whom entered Election Day in a close race to see who will challenge two-term Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton. The 11th District encompasses Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Joaquin counties, spreading out in the configuration of an oddly elongated jigsaw puzzle piece that extends from Stockton all the way south to Gilroy, then covering the Tri-Valley area: Livermore, Dublin, parts of Pleasanton and most of San Ramon, excluding the city’s fast-growing, master-planned Dougherty Valley, where, ironically, is where Harmer resides with his wife, Elaine, and their four children.

“The Harmer family is going to be really happy whatever the outcome,” Harmer said. “If I end up winning the nomination, we’ll be grateful for the opportunity to carry the message and hopefully serve. If I don’t, we’ll be grateful for the opportunity to get back to normal life. There’s no downside. We’re going to be happy either way.”

If Harmer becomes the Republican nominee and beats McNerney in November, he wants to bring a “renewed spirit” to Washington, referring to “what’s really wrong in Washington” has to do with elected officials forgetting who they work for: their constituents back home.

“You don’t lose touch with the people who sent you there (to Washington),” Harmer explained. “You remember who sent you there, and why.”

“The government is fat and happy,” he said. “There’s something wrong with that”, referring to excessive Federal spending.

“If I’m sent to Washington, it’ll be because people have had enough of that. And they want to change it,” Harmer said.

Harmer said he is grateful for the “wonderful people who have worked so hard” for him throughout the campaign.

“The predominating emotion is gratitude,” he said. “I’m grateful for these wonderful people who have worked so hard, and trusted me with the opportunity to represent their views in the campaign.”

  1. The gang of four GOP lightweights slung all the mud they wanted at each other and at Congressman Jerry McNerney but at the end of the day we are going to elect Jerry McNerney. Harmer now the GOP candidate does not even live in our district. How can he even begin to be considered as our Representative. Jerry has been a fantastic Congressman and has done great and hard work for us all. His leadership in getting his two bills passed and signed into law to increase benefits and care for our soldiers, veterans and families is a huge benefit for us in District 11. We are proud to send Jerry back to Washington to keep up his good work. Thank you Jerry McNerney!!!

  2. Chet,

Is mcnerney your brother or a relative or do you owe him money? That or you must be the ultimate brown noser with some reward at the end of your progressive rainbow.

Like many liberals you must still suffer from all the dope you smoked in your hippie youth. Nice you changed your clothes when you moved to the area. jerry sucks, he has passed and will continue to pass laws that are not supported by the people of District 11. Healthcare alone is enough to end him. He is listening to his party not to the people. Chet once you become less delusional please realize that it is the Peoples Seat that jerry will be leaving in November.

  3. Ditto Chet! Jerry McNerney has been a wonderful representative for a very large and diverse district! And no, I’m not related to him, but we will do everything we can in the fall to re-elect him. Just ask our veterans what he has done for them lately…

And a sign of intelligence is the ability to express thoughtful ideas in coherent sentences, not name calling or mud slinging as stated below. Everyone has an opinion, no need to attack the messenger.

  4. I personally am very very happy that the open elections proposal passed. I found it to be a waste of my vote(and money for the elections) when the democratic party didn’t do me the courtesy of allowing for a choice on the candidate. I do not drink anyone’s kool aid and actually am not certain I do feel as positively about McNerney as those above do. His meeting in Danville was held at a time when anyone who actually works couldn’t attend, he does have phone in “meetings” which are kind of an interesting concept. I know that he was doing polls re his vote on health care bill the night before the vote (I got a call) and I am not certain that is a good thing, it does show a bit of last minute indecisiveness. I really do not know if he is a good leader for this area, and he hasn’t really said or done anything to convince me that he is. The veteran’s bill that has been listed as an accomplishment is targeted to a specific demographic, what has he done that has benefited the area he represents? I am asking for that information, not stating that he has not done anything…just that I am not aware of what he has done.

  5. Oh, Steve.
How could you fall for it……so hook, line, and sinker!?!

Please know, by now, that there are several dedicated liberals that regularly read the Danville Express and religiously insert their political statements.
And, Chet, is always one-of-the-first with his leftist “talking points.”

Yes, their propaganda is obvious, in-your-face and therefore slightly irritating.
But why fall for it. And then give them seeming credibility by your over-the-top character assignation.
You just turn other people off.

Please reflect truer Character and Values.
    People are watching….and learning.

  6. We’ve seen the real McNerney.
Outside of “looking-good” bills for veterans, he’s all about more Big Government/Big Spending and ruination of the Individualistic (personal responsibility)/Capitalistic (free enterprise) system.
Thank him for his help to Vets…..and then get rid of him before he collapses the entire economic system with his movements toward Socialism.

Unless we want more wasteful, unprincipaled government spending: bailouts of certain industries (usually heavily unionized), government take-overs of other industries (healthcare), over-regulation/red-tape/taxation.
Huge centralized Big Government that intrudes on everything, costs too much to afford, takes one-in-five-working people to operate, costs more than private industry to do the same work and gives worse customer service. Empire-building government departments.
More and more WASHINGTON government, with lack of individual-determined and state-defined freedoms and responsibilities.

Remember, the huge USSR is no more. It imploded from within due to economic problems with the Socialist versus Capitalist economic systems. It’s broken and gone. It didn’t take an invading force to conquer it. It’s gone by its own bankrupt policies.
Are we (and Europe) heading to a similar end?

  7. Hail to the Hippies!! May we all live long and prosper!
    Chet, well said.
    Steve, what is a hippie?
I’l give you my answer, as I was and still am proud “hippie” liberal. We were about loving your neighbor, no matter who they were.
We believe that there is a better solution than war. We believe in living in as close harmony to nature as possible. We live organically, without polluting the world with chemicals. We believe that the world can and will be restored and eventually we will live in peace.
We tried, and are still trying, to walk softly on the earth.
I cannot imagine anyone disagreeing with this philosophy.
As far as the drugs, yes, many people were led astray in the sixties.
They were lost souls then and are now on the other side, at peace. But don’t many of us have our own drugs of choice? Alcohol, prescription drugs, the TV, Video games, they all numb the mind. As my father always says, “Don’t judge a man until you walk a mile in his mocassins”.
Sorry I am rambling, this product of the sixties is now in his sixties!
Peace, love, joy to all, and may the force be with you.

  8. Extra, Extra, Read All About It, McNernry the Light Weight. Knocked Out In The First Round. Returns to His Wind Farm. 11th District has a New Champion! GOP Baby!

    Boxer is knocked out too!

  9. “All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for GOOD men to do NOTHING”.
    Edmund Burke

I HATE politics…but when I began to realize what the future held for my grandchildren, I became crazed and asked what I could do to make a difference…We MUST stop the madness and outrageous spending that McNerny has supported with his VOTES. Facts are facts. He also STOOD AND APPLAUDED when Mexico’s president slammed Arizona’s Immigration laws, which are NOTHING COMPARED TO MEXICO’S IMMIGRATION LAWS…(look it up for yourself)and Arizona was just enforcing immigration laws ALREADY in place but not being enforced. We need leaders who love our Country enough to PROTECT it and protect US…and who actually READ bills before passing judgement!

IF, you feel as I do, and want to eliminate a Pelosi Puppet Vote (check McNerney’s record for yourself) in Congress for ALL of us…read on…

This is such an important year…maybe the most important in our lifetime. Will our Country continue to “Fundamentally Transform” to Socialism, outrageous taxation and micro-management of our daily lives….OR remain, as intended by our Founders, …OUR government was designed to keep us safe and keep us free to choose our own destiny.

There has been shameful corruption on both sides of the aisle and it is time to clean house and get moral and honorable leaders in office. I know David Harmer personally…he is NOT a politician, but one of us…. an intelligent, articulate, moral man dedicated to keeping our Nation safe and secure for his children, and ALL of our children and grandchildren.

Two of my family members were ADAMENT about not supporting a Republican..After reluctantly meeting David Harmer, they now BOTH SUPPORT HIM, and they are Democrats.

Tuesday night David quoted Reagan. When Carter was running against Reagan, Carter said, “Trust me”…..Reagan gave this some thought and said, “Don’t trust me, trust yourself to HOLD ME ACCOUNTABLE”. David Harmer asks us to “Trust ourselves to hold HIM accountable”.We NEED someone representing the people, not special interests. Wake up good people before IT IS TOO LATE for future generations…

  10. Eh. Appears to be just another Bible Thumper. Both sides of the spectrum (Jesus haters & Jesus freaks) are annoying. They both need to leave governing to rational, intelligent people who don’t feel the need to impose their love or dislike of Jesus on the rest of us.

  11. It is funny though that Harmer quotes Reagan all the time and at the same time says he believes in the “family”. Let’s not forget who gave our country the concept of no-fault divorce – good ole’ Ronnie signed it into law in 1969. You think gay marriage flies in the face of reason? How about the concept of no-fault divorce? When you destroy a family by getting divorced (which is what happens – a family is ended) – somebody is at fault. Jeez. Another politician with inconsistent beliefs.

  12. Help us All, when a family gets to the point of divorce, dragging everyone through the mud to PROVE WHO IS AT FAULT, would only add salt to the wound. No fault is a more compassionate way to deal with the tragic event…especially where there are children involved. Reagan’s wisdom still holds today. Our Country is in terrible trouble and our children are inheriting unsustainable debt. Our quality of life is being diminished. We will be working years beyond our planned retirement age as our retirement funds are way down. Our borders are not safe or secure and McNerney sees no reason to secure OUR borders at a level higher then Mexico secures hers. To immigrate to Mexico you have to already have a job ad be an UPSTANDING citizen! ILLEGAL immigrants in America have more rights then hard working Americans and Vets who are paying taxes. By the way, it is time to read the definition of ILLEGAL folks. Unemployment is high and going higher. Terrorist activities are up. How is that “Hope and Change ” working out for you so far?
We NEED honorable leaders. David Harmer is an honorable man who can help reverse this tide. He holds Town Hall Phone meetings for as many as 2,000 people at a time where “we the people” can actually ask questions and get honest answers. He LISTENS to us.
It is time for change, friends. What McNerney has been supporting is HURTING us and our future generations. It is time to do the right thing and Harmer has the intelligence, experience and integrity for this. Time to wake up before it is too late for our children. Pay attention to those running for office who vocalize that they actually CARE about the future of our children!

  13. Patriotic – Ronnie’s logic was a way to justify his own immoral behavior of divorcing, leaving a family destroyed. No fault divorce has helped destroy the fabric of our society and is a blight upon our country. I fail to understand why anyone, who truly cares about the family, would idolize a man who couldn’t adhere to his marriage vows. Divorce is not a tragic event. Losing your home in an earthquake is a tragedy because it was beyond your control. Divorce is not beyond your control. It’s a choice that Reagan helped make palatable by saying nobody is to blame.

Reading Harmer’s website simply confirms that he’s another Bible thumping dude who wants to rule your bedroom. Democrats want to put their hand in your wallet and Republicans want to plant themselves in your bed. With these two parties – it’s no wonder our country is going to hell in a hand basket. Either way – we are doomed. Time to start learning Chinese.

  14. Help us All, Divorce IS Tragic where children are involved. Loosing a family unit, for children is a bigger tragedy then loosing a house….just ask any child who has been through it. The carnage of a “divorce earthquake” of a family is far more painful then a “house earthquake” alone. People matter more then things.
You are right, those who do not love our Country and the God given Freedom that goes with it…the very Freedom that made us the most generous and compassionate Country in the world… they are better off going to a Country more to their liking. On this we can agree!
David Harmer loves God, Country and Family…Even those who do not embrace God, have benefited from the Judeo-Christian Foundation of our Nation. I have traveled the world, and seen how Countries that do not embrace Freedom treat their people….what little control they have over their own destiny. I choose Freedom. I endorse candidates who do the same. We have never seen boat loads of people fleeing America for a better life. David Harmer is needed in Congress for all those who love our Country, as the Founding Fathers created it.

  15. Ha, Mr. Doom and Gloom studding Chinese…. You better pray to God we don’t have China governing us.
My son lives there. Do you know that you have to get a license to get married, no, not the kind you get here, the government has to approve that you can to marry. Do you know you have to get permission to have a baby and you can only have one! I asked the neighbor if she wanted more, she said she would, but she would loose her job if she had another child. She is a professor at the University. My son’s house keeper got pregnant before she “got permission”. She had to flee to the countryside as she heard the “Abortion Police” were coming to take her to the hospital for an abortion. I had to register with the government when I was there, even though it was only for a month. Everyone is registered and if your found in another city without permission, you may go to jail. It is not equal there, the top 5% own BMW’s, Mercedes, Bentley’s and buy $2500 purses, while my sons houser husband works 7 days a week for $1 an hour. You better hope Harmer gets back to Washington to fight for smaller government, STOP the spending and give choices back to the people …or my grandchildren will live as the Chinese do.. IN FEAR.
