California Highway Patrol (CHP) personnel are set to lead a class hoping to help young drivers start off on the right foot Tuesday evening at Dougherty Valley High School.
The “Start Smart” presentation, hosted by the San Ramon Valley Street Smarts program, is a two-hour driver safety education course for new and prospective teen drivers and their parents or guardians.
“Driving can be dangerous for teens,” Street Smarts coordinator Dolores Pita said in a statement. “Teen drivers are more likely to get into traffic collisions than any other age group. Even more troubling is the fact that motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for teens aged 15 to 19.”
During the “Start Smart” class, CHP officers will discuss key factors associated with crashes involving teen drivers, as well as provide tips for avoiding collisions and outline responsibilities for young drivers and their parents.
Organizers recommend parents and children attend the event together. They also point out that the presentation includes graphic crash images.
The class runs from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the performing arts center at Dougherty Valley High, 10550 Albion Road in San Ramon. Attendees can try a distracted-driver simulator beforehand, beginning at 6:15 p.m.

Every beginning teenage driver should be required to take this class. Most teenagers drive with their head up there #*#, on the cell phone, radio on….The more friends they have in the car, the worse it is.
