Cue the kittens.
Several darling little felines looking for homes through the East Bay SPCA were chosen to star in a video recently, a tweaked version of Adele’s song, “Hello,” presented as “Meow.”
“This is our second parody at the East Bay SPCA,” digital marketing manager Jessica Perrin said. “The first one was dog-related, a parody of Bruno Mars and his ‘Uptown Funk’ that featured more of an Oakland location.”
That fetching film, titled “Oak Town Pup,” also had a spay and neuter message. It has gone viral in the last year with more than 1.8 million hits, Perrin said. She is hoping for the same success for the kittens.
East Bay SPCA partnered with production company Meme Tics for both parodies.
“They came out with the camera crew and helped us with the lyrics and all the legalese,” Perrin said. “They helped us launch it as well.”
“Meow” features a young girl, a woman and an older gentleman who visit the shelter, which starts the kittens daydreaming about what their lives would be like if they took them home. In the song, the kittens promise the potential adopters that they will do whatever it takes to be the best pets ever.
The shoot took about a day and a half, Perrin said, at the East Bay SPCA and at a home.
“We had a fun time doing it,” she recalled. “We chose kittens because they are easier to move around. Older cats are harder to work with.”
The older gentleman is an actor, but the others were volunteers. The kittens were from the shelter but have now found their forever homes.
The “Meow” video will be shown at the East Bay SPCA’s fundraiser May 15, “Growl, Meow and Wine.” For more information on the fundraiser, go to www.growlmeowandwine.org.
The East Bay SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has adoption centers in Dublin and Oakland. It also has spay and neuter clinics.
The video was posted on YouTube on April 6, and it has 160,352 hits as of Sunday night. It can be found at www.youtube.com with a search for East Bay SPCA.
“So far we’ve had very good feedback,” Perrin said. “Some people are like, ‘It made me cry.’ Everyone loved it and thought it was so cute.”
The goal is to let people know that rescued animals make wonderful pets, and Perrin is thrilled that her tweets of the video have been retweeted again and again.
“I have seen it tweeted in French and in Spanish,” she said.
She is hoping a celebrity or two will retweet it to their vast audiences. Hello, Adele.
