Swalwell bill aims to prevent U.S. president, family from profiting off foreign powers

Original post made on Jul 24, 2018

The Tri-Valley's U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Dublin), one of Congress's more vocal critics of President Donald Trump and many of the administration's international policies, has introduced a new bill to toughen federal regulations that aim to curb any U.S. president or vice president from receiving financial benefits from foreign powers.

Hey Eric Swalwell, if you are truly concerned with foreign countries being financially involved with U.S. President's, why not pass a bill where President's can not shortly after being out of office make millions of dollars giving "speeches" to foreign countries? President Clinton and the Clinton Foundation, and President Obama, have both made millions of dollars giving speeches to foreign countries shortly after leaving office. As we learned during the last election, both of these ex Presidents passed numerous pieces of legislation that were favorable to the countries these President's later made millions from in giving speeches.

We all know Swalwell has no interest in my suggestion, as he really does not care about foreign nations having financial involvement with US Presidents and the influence factor, but rather only cares about being Nancy Pelosi's lapdog and trying to stick it to Trump.

The Clintons, per Hillary, left the whitehouse "broke", but thanks to their "foundation" that made millions of dollars giving speeches to foreign nations, had no problem buying their daughter a $10 million dollar penthouse in NY City. Obama was a "community organizer", and never made over $75,000 a year until he became a U.S. Senator and then President, but recently he mentioned he has enough money(from giving speeches to foreign nations) that he is considering being part owner of a professional sports team.

President Trump, unlike the Clintons and Obama, was a billionaire before he became President, and actually donates his salary to charity.

So Swalwal, who is more likely to be influenced by foreign nations, financially, the "broke" Clintons, the community organizers Obama family, or the already billionaire President Trump?

Sounds like another case of Trump derangement syndrome. Swalwell came to my door during his first campaign and told me he would continue to vote his conscience and not just be another lock step Democrat. We can see how that worked out. He wants more and more power. I guess it's time time to look for another rep for congress.

Pouty Eric is just another low-IQ Leftist puking up the party line without regard to facts or evidence. He needs to take his psych meds - the TDS is strong in that one.

I am happy to see how many conservatives are still in this area! Let's get President Trump the powerful team elected that he needs this November to wipe out these criminal liberals. Has anyone noticed that all liberal run cities are the filthiest, most drug & crime ridden, and full of trashy, low class people? We are tired of "victims" who demand a handout from us hard working, responsible, intelligent conservative, family oriented Patriots! VOTE CONSERVATIVE!

Eric should focus on the local issues, which there seem to be enough and he pledged he would, than his future political path by jumping on the Dems bandwagon of demeaning the current administration.

The local conservatives in town should all run for some type of office. This is the only way "we the people" will actually control the government. You don't need any experience. Actually, Trump had none and kicked everyone to the curb! Any one of us can run for an office and take control away from they lying, mentally ill, greedy & dysfunctional liberals. I encourage all of my Patriot brothers and sisters to take on this mission for the sake of our children, our communities and our country!

If Swalwell was still seated on the Dublin city council.
Dublin would be A sanctuary city.

This is actually in the Constitution. Federal government officials should not be able to accept money or other things of value from foreign governments that are seeking to influence U.S. policy. Those official do not own their government positions. They hold them in trust for the People. Laws that implement this Constitutional prohibition should be stringent and should be enforced.

The legislative intent of the Constitution on this issue is to prohibit Federal Government employees from financially profiting from foreign nations that influence their policy. It makes no difference if the employee received the financial profit while still in office or shortly after they leave office, as the concern is the policy was implemented to help the foreign nation that financially compensated the employee. Thus, when the Clintons implemented numerous policies that benefited foreign nations and shortly after leaving office received millions from those same foreign nations for giving "speeches", it is a violation of the Constitution and the legislative intent of the law. Thus, I agree with you, that the Clintons broke the law and it should be enforced.

Oh, wait, you are one of those liberals that only likes to enforce laws when it benefits your party. You are not worthy of using a great name like Lincoln, a true Republican.

@American -- I didn't say anything about any particular government official. I just said that the law needs to be stringent and be enforced. Feeling a little sensitive about Trump's grifting? I'm sensing some "whataboutism" on your part.

If you have particular examples of violations by either of the Clintons, it would be more credible to state them, rather than deal in vague generalities. However, I believe that your interpretation of the Emoluments Clause is incorrect, unless the government official was promised the financial benefit while still in office.

@American -- BTW, I would not question your use of the moniker "American." Absent proof otherwise, I am perfectly happy to assume that you are indeed an American. Likewise, I am fully entitled to use the name "Lincoln," because it is my name.
