After analyzing the location of this home on the map, considering the time of the incident, the description of the incident, and the fact that there is no description of the suspects except having masks on, I am willing to bet that this was an insider job. It does not look like a random act at all. The robbers definitely had the information on the owner, his habits, the fact that no one else was in the house at that time, and also they knew he had valuables in the house. Chances are the owner knew at least one of them real well, and would recognize him if he did not have a mask on, or if taht robber talked.
