A potential danger was neutralized Monday morning when Dougherty Valley High School students alerted school staff that another student was in possession of a weapon at the San Ramon campus, leading to the arrest of a freshman student, according to authorities.

After school administrators notified police, the 14-year-old student — whose name was not released — was arrested and found to be in possession of both a knife and muriatic acid, a cleaning supply that when combined with other chemicals can be used to create an explosive detonation, according to San Ramon Valley Unified School District and San Ramon Police Department officials.

Police are currently investigating why the student was in possession of these items, but the freshman was arrested and booked into the Martinez juvenile hall for possession of a knife on school grounds and possession of concealed explosive components.

San Ramon police officials stressed that the incident has been contained and no danger currently exists for students or the school. They were also quick to praise the students who reported the illicit item.

“(The SRPD) would like to commend the students who reported the suspicious activity, as well as the school administrators who immediately notified us. We cannot emphasize enough that, ‘If you see something or know something, say something,’” Lt. Cary Goldberg said in a statement.

SRVUSD officials echoed similar sentiments.

“We cannot say enough that it is through the reporting of information that together we are able to keep our students safe,” SRVUSD spokesperson Elizabeth Graswich wrote in a statement. “We are grateful to the students who came forward and reported suspicious information to school administration.”

Each SRVUSD school has its own anonymous tip line link posted to their website that anyone can use to send information.

  1. I don’t know why he would do this. I think he thought ut was funny, I know him roughly, and he seems like a very cool guy. I don’t think he meant any harm.
