Danville: Demonstrators call for more action from officials following 'White Lives Matter' display

Original post made on May 27, 2022

Two prominent features of civic engagement in the pandemic era -- spirited public comment sessions at virtual meetings and rallies for social justice -- converged around the Danville Town Council's last regular meeting.

It’s wonderful that citizens are standing up for what’s right and standing against the ugly lies on the signs that were held up by men afraid to show their faces in Blackhawk. I fully support their call to action on the Tyrrell Wilson shooting. Sheriff Livingston has got to go and luckily we have that chance to get rid of them. Everyone should vote in the primary and support his opponent.

@Franette

Just out of curiosity, what are the “ugly lies” on the signs, as you so chirped? I’m not talking a side here, I’m just curious.

More importantly, do you declare that one side can fly a flag of their choosing, while the other side can’t?

Hmm, are we 100% sure the perpetrators are not part of an activism group? Fake "hate crimes" are a common tactic by certain groups. Social justice groups have often been caught (especially on college campuses) making up hoaxes in order to "bring attention to a problem". None of us should jump to conclusions until we catch the perpetrators. Think Jussie Smollett.

Agree with the above. What are the “ugly lies“ that were told? And since when can’t people cover their faces? People cover their faces all day every day on social media. It’s actually a crying shame that people feel like they have to cover their faces in order to express their viewpoint. Based on some of the commentary after their peaceful protest, it’s clear there is little tolerance in Danville for opinions that differ. Is Danville becoming Woke?

Kjgamble has it right. The Constitution guarantees "the freedom to speak freely about anything." Everyone can evaluate for themselves, what the demonstrators said and did, I am not making a value judgement on the specifics here. Personally, what I find objectionable is for our Mayor and Town Council having the temerity to think that they have the "right to speak for the Town." It's fine for each of them to express their personal opinions about anything, but it is patently wrong for any one of them to "speak for all the rest of us." Then again, we have re-elected this group, most of whom have been on the Council since Danville was incorporated, so we are the ones who are ultimately at fault. With the passage of time, they all get the idea that "it's their Town, not ours." Voting for someone else sends a message, but unfortunately our citizens are too self-absorbed to do that in most cases.

Hmm. Weird how the First Amendment Defense Squad only comes out in the comments when people are mad about racists.
