Two men arrested in San Ramon break-ins

San Ramon police arrested two men in connection with a pair of break-ins in the city Thursday morning, according to a police spokesman.

Derick A. Lewis, 26, of Livermore and 31-year-old Daniel McGlaughlin, a transient, were booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of burglary-related offenses, outstanding warrants and other charges, according to San Ramon police Lt. Terry Reeder.

Authorities are also investigating whether the duo had ties to other burglaries in the area, Reeder said.

Police nabbed Lewis and McGlaughlin after responding to a report of a car break-in just before 8 a.m. Thursday in the area of Marble Canyon Place near Golden View Elementary School and Crow Canyon Country Club, according to Reeder.

During the investigation, a resident told police she saw two suspicious strangers in her neighborhood, Reeder said. She then provided a description of the two men, whom she said had just ran from the area, the lieutenant added.

“It appeared the suspects had been startled by the resident and possibly left the vehicle they arrived in behind,” Reeder said.

An officer found an abandoned vehicle parked in front of a nearby residence and inside were items taken from the initial theft, according to Reader. Further investigation revealed the vehicle was recently stolen from Livermore but not yet reported to police, he said.

Reeder said more officers arrived on scene and soon located Lewis and McGlaughlin on Crow Canyon Road near Camino Ramon.

Police allege the two men possessed additional property from the initial break-in as well as items taken from a residential burglary earlier Thursday morning in San Ramon. Reeder said both men also had outstanding arrest warrants from Alameda County.

Lewis was booked on suspicion of possessing stolen property and methamphetamine as well as for an arrest warrant out of Berkeley for residential burglary, according to Reeder.

McGlaughlin was booked on suspicion of possessing stolen property and burglary tools, violating probation and having an Alameda County arrest warrant for vehicle theft and evading authorities, Reeder said.

The lieutenant credited the initial call to police and the eyewitness details provided during the investigation, saying, “Without the resident’s assistance, we would not have had the suspect information, which led to a quick arrest and property being returned to their owners.”
