Groups of students at both San Ramon high schools rallied peacefully on Thursday afternoon in the wake of this week’s presidential election.

About 130 students participated in a walk-out at California High School, marching with signs and chants for a half-hour up to San Ramon City Hall, where they rallied against bigotry toward minority groups.

At crosstown Dougherty Valley High School, about 60 students gathered on the quad in separate groups expressing opposing views on President-elect Donald Trump during a lunch-period protest with signs and chanting, according to school district spokeswoman Elizabeth Graswich.

The two rallies, which each involved less than 5% of the respective school’s student population, ended peacefully and without incident, Graswich said. The Dougherty Valley students returned to class after the lunch bell rang, while the Cal High rally featured students walking off campus during class time.

“We prefer that our students stay in class, but we understand and respect their desire to make their voices heard in a peaceful manner,” Graswich said. “We teach the historic importance of political protest, critical thinking and advocacy, so it’s important that we also respect our students’ right to express themselves.”

The rallies at the San Ramon high schools came on the same day as large- and small-scale student protests occurring after the national election in other parts of the Bay Area, in cities like San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, Walnut Creek, Concord and Napa.

The group of Cal High students, which represented about 4.5% of the school’s student population, walked off campus around 1:20 p.m., shortly after the end-of-lunch bell rang.

The teens gathered outside the campus before beginning the 1.5-mile walk to City Hall, marching on the sidewalk up Broadmoor Drive, over onto Montevideo Drive and then along the Iron Horse Regional Trail before assembling outside City Hall on Bollinger Canyon Road.

As they walked, the students cheered and joined in chants such as “love trumps hate” and “ain’t no power like the power of the people because the power of the people won’t stop.”

San Ramon police officers, along with principal Sarah Cranford and a couple school administrators, followed the Cal High students to help ensure safety. Cranford declined to comment on the rally, deferring questions to district spokeswoman Graswich.

“Our top priority is to make sure our students are safe; and therefore staff and San Ramon Police monitored the protest,” Graswich said.

Student leaders who spoke when the Cal High group arrived at City Hall said their intent wasn’t to protest that the Republican Trump was elected president, but rather to speak out against their feeling that Trump’s candidacy has led to some white Americans feeling more comfortable with expressing hateful sentiments toward minority groups during and after the election.

They said they wanted the San Ramon community to know they think it’s unacceptable for people to express racist, homophobic, misogynistic, anti-Muslim or other discriminatory actions and remarks.

The group cheered and chanted at times while assembled at City Hall, also taking a moment to publicly thank their San Ramon police escorts.

Students also held a couple dozen signs with phrases such as “Students against bigotry,” “Hate prevents unity,” “Love trumps hate” and “Muslim lives matter.” There were also a couple anti-election posters such as “Trump is not my president” and “Dump Trump.”

Rallying at a visible spot along Bollinger Canyon Road, the students received some honks of support from cars driving by, and a handful of people walking by or across the street at The Marketplace shopping center stopped by the protest and snapped photographs.

San Ramon Mayor Bill Clarkson also stepped outside his City Hall office to observe the student rally.

“It’s America, which means people get to say what they want to say,” Clarkson said, pointing out that he took part in some civil rights rallies as a student in the late 1960s. “Whether you agree or disagree, the beauty is that people get to do this without fear of retribution.”

The scene at Dougherty Valley High was shorter and smaller.

The protest there, which featured about 2% of the student population, lasted only during the lunch period but did feature students for and against Trump, according to Graswich. “It was respectful, and students returned to class when the bell rang for lunch to be over,” she said.

  1. Get over it whiners, we won, the 25% of voters in CA that voted for Trump. The ultra liberals in CA that voted for Pelosi, Swalwell, Newsome & Gov. Moonbeam will just have to feel as bad as the 25% of CA voters the libs trample on at every election.

“It’s America, which means people get to say what they want to say,” Clarkson said. (Should be added here that Clarkson needs to clarify that if you, a concerned resident speaks in front of city council, you will be ignored.)

  2. While all you Clinton supporters were crying and wondering how to explain the election results to your children, I was celebrating and teaching my kids that this is how a democracy works.

  3. Clinton supporters keep saying Trump did this and he did that. Why don’t they talk about all of the things Clinton has done that have been questionable – accepting illegal money from certain countries through her foundation and not disclosing it, the many people who were set to testify against the Clintons and then they all died in one way or another before being able to testify. Trump may be rude and disrespectful, but at least he’s not criminal. Let people vote the way they want because that is what real democracy is all about. When Obama won his presidency, you didn’t see people go out and terrorize the City by burning and breaking things and disrupting traffic. Respect people’s property and choices and stop being a sore loser.

  4. Some students probably used this as an excuse to skip class and start their three day weekend early. I do give them props for doing it in a peaceful manner. But honestly, what will this accomplish? Nothing really. You might get a picture and article on local news sites, but nothing will change. America has voted, Trump is going to be president.

  5. What the @&$@ is wrong with you people? A peaceful respectful protest by thought provoked students. I’m proud of these young people because they seem to understand better than most of you commenters about the depth of bigotry that has been exposed because of Trump’s rally cries. Shame on you. Our Mayor is correct in his comments. Come on San Ramon adults. Be better role models to the future leaders.

  6. I fully support post all the above post! And I fully agree with them! Except the one this stated that Clinton had one wooden our kids be protesting…. The answer is no. Is the liberal-left and they’re ‘paid to protest people’ who like to go out on the streets an inconvenience others and vandalize properties to make their points. I voted for Trump and everyone is going to see a better greater country!

  7. PS: I apologize for the typos in my posting above. Unfortunately this is what happens when you use voice commands. Or at least it happens to me a lot.
REGARDING the comments that Trump and his supporters are all bigoted or racist are Lies.
People who say that have bought into the media lies where they only gave partial quotes of Trumps statements or speeches and extracted what they wanted… and all the dummies that took those quotes and made it their rally call.
The Clinton campaign floated on a lot of lies itself and then made lies about Donald Trump.YES, TRUMP 2017 ☆☆☆

  8. I will take these young idealists any day, especially over the pseudo-cynical hipster millennials who stayed home and handed candidate Trump his victory.

It is apparent that many of the protesters have given these issues some actual thought, in great contrast to their elders posting above — who espouse “control” of the kids to thereby squelch free expression and dissent. And serious thought.

Protest is among the best of true American traditions — authoritarian conformity, not so much.

  9. Republicans didn’t protest and make national news both times Obama won! We dealt with the loss in a civilized manner. Get over it, grow up, repect other people’s views and put your effort into seeing how to have your candidate win next time. What is this protesting accomplishing besides making you look bad?

  10. I couldn’t agree more with all these posts. The liberal left (school districts, etc.) don’t get their way and then they go crazy. The election was legitimate. We have a democracy and the silent majority has spoken. Let’s move on. The people will see that Trump will be the greatest President we have had in our lifetime.

  11. Republicans are the very queens of tossed-off false equivalence.

This was no ordinary choice, and if you don’t realize that or treated it as routine, your ignorance is doing our American way-of-life a very serious disservice. Your kids are learning what you’ve forgotten.

  12. My kids’ school has a framed picture of Obama right as you come in. It makes me vomit every time I see it.

Will they replace it with a picture of Trump?

    Poor pantsuit nation.

    This is going to hurt.

I am trying not to laugh.

    Out loud.

  13. While I didn’t vote for either of them let’s move on and give the guy a chance as governing is a lot different than sound bites.

Loved that the students protested “peacefully” as the ability to do this is what the USA is all about. Would take this over apathy any day of the week.

  14. Yes indeedy. Mr. Trump sure brings out the best in all of us, especially you few remaining republicans in California. Are there any rocks left with vermin still under them?

  15. We all knew that statistically there was a ~95% chance that a Republican would win. I, at the outset did not fathom it would be Trump, but the odds were huge it would be the Republican nominee. Anybody who would not take 90-95%+ odds is a fool.

When it comes to voting for President there is a huge behavioral bias. We all have behavioral biases. But Presidential elections bring them to the fore, particularly this election. Most of us, make most of our decisions, to support our established beliefs. This is why critical thinking skills are so difficult to master (speaking for myself here).

I love the play of hypocrisy and irony but not so much cynicism. Trump’s presidency will surprise you. Trump loves money and loves himself (I think he loves debt more). On the practical side, the only folks that can defeat him are Republicans. On the advantageous side, Republicans will not be able to blame the Bushs, Obamas or anybody else. The bar has been set low for him. He will do and say what it takes to be interpreted as successful. Think about it, if Romney would have won over Obama, based on current economic figures, Romney would have claimed economic triumph – an economic hero. All to say, even though it will all be on borrowed money, the near-term economy may surprise you. It will not be 4% as Trump says but a solid 2%+ is darn good. The positive and negative of Trump is who knows what he will do. But if we follow my rule of the 50% discount, discount half of what people say, then…read the above.

And hey, if you’re in the right bracket you are gonna get a heckava [borrowed] tax cut. Invest it! Inflation will increase (more approved mergers allowing pricing control), but will be historically tame. Regulation will go bye-bye (historically and statistically we know where that leads us: short term good – long term no good). The estate tax will be repealed (the prime mechanism for Trump to transfer his wealth to his children tax free and above board). The dollar will [hopefully] remain strong. If Trump tries the weak dollar thing again then all bets are off. The environment will take a dump. More Ammon Bundys will feel entitled so less public land (without a fight anyway) and less places to hunt (there’s some gun irony for ya).

    China will accelerate its ascendance.
    Europe will continue to dwindle.
    Russia will continue its desperation.
    Character does not count.
    Greed is good.
    Debt is good.
    Ethics are gone.
Pillars of truth are mounds of sand.
Put your name on it and paint it gold.

But most important, and the prime reason people voted for Clinton, Supreme Court appointments. Your civil rights, already significantly compromised, are gone (my get down with cynicism). For all the Liberty that Republicans espouse, I cannot understand their assault on the Constitution from these new originalists (many of whom would not have been allowed to vote at the start of this Republic).

    I’m done. Have fun!

  16. …a photo op for these “children” who are still wet behind their ears! OK, so you got your picture taken…now MOVE ON!

    Hurray for President-Elect Trump.

  17. As a senior citizen, l have the benefit of a lifetime of experiences. Yet, l am continually dismayed by the ignorance of those who speak first without understanding or knowledge of the subject. Why do young people, students, gravitate to the worse case senario? Maybe their parents (too busy) haven’t used life’s experiences to discuss the many permutions that effect social interactions? Perhaps the high school teachers are too interested in teaching what they interpret as good and bad, instead of right or wrong? This nation has just witnessed democracy in action. Adults have exercised their indivudual rights to vote, and the outcome has been accepted without a challenge…by anyone except many young people too young to vote. The system worked perfectly! Because you don’t appreciate the outcome is no reason to disrupt the ensuing democratic process. Perhaps you need to stay in class so that your teacher can completly explain “Democracy” in action. If they can’t, then march on the principal, not society, not government offices. Or sit your parents down and have a heart to heart…you may learn more about them and life than you know now. Most of all learn to “respect” before criticizing! God bless!

  18. I sure hope the civics teacher did not lead this group. We had a democratic election and results should be honored. You can’t tell me these kids didn’t just want to have fun getting out of class. Maybe we should question them on our country and ask them who is the Vice President , when was the civil war , etc, etc, . Bet they wouldn’t know but they should were protesting for an immoral candidate. People didn’t do this 8 years ago although we all wanted to do so. What are we teaching our young people. Teacher should be held yeponsible.

  19. Any Teacher or Principle supporting leaving school to participate in protesting should be fired!

We do have the right to protest, that I agree.

However if I walked off my job to go join the protest I would be fired and replaced.

Protesting has a place, but is to be done on their time.

I send my child (who by the way under law does not have a voice until they are 18 years old) to learn and get an education. It is up to the school to keep my child safe while in their care. If anything were to happen to my child I would be pressing charges! What would happen if they got hit by a car? The children are minors and need parents permission to leave school for any reason.

I hope the children are suspended not for protesting but for leaving school grounds with the proper authority.

Remember at the end of the day, under law, the school and parents are responsible for our children.

  20. Perfectly said Robert Shelton and I totally agree with Resident.

The question was asked above, if I would allow my children to protest if Clinton was elected, the answer is NO! Children need to be in school. Parents need to control their children and make sure they do the right things. Skipping school is wrong.

I have told my children, who are in high school and college, not to talk about politics because it is a dangerous world out there. After seeing the video where an innocent white older man was pulled out of his car by black people and beat up because they thought he voted for Trump is disgusting.

The difference between the right and left, is that the left get so angry, start protests, which turn into riots, that eventually destroy their cities. On the other hand, the right will figure out how to democratically change it or just forget about it because it’s not worth the fight. Example, there were no flights, protests, or riots when Obama was elected the first or second time.

Let’s all learn to live in peace, and teach our children that also.

  21. The following news announcement just in:

“Paul Ryan just announced that as part of repealing Obamacare he plans to phase out Medicare and replace it with private insurance for retirees.”

    Make America Great Again!!! Yes!!

  22. Don’t blame the children! Children pick up what is projected from adults and from their parents’ views at home. When parents are too busy to teach LOVE, children are led to follow their extended families viewpoints. Hate is a learned trait. It can be un-learned.
    eRACEism

  23. With all of the white and black extremist groups, how come none of the white, or right-wing groups, caused any trouble the last eight years, but we have certainly seen many riots by the black lives matters and other movements?

  24. Poor Glates and Christine and others who seem to suffer from an acute case of political amnesia. Do the rest of you remember the Tea Party protests, which were marked by open-carry of weapons, numerous instances of hanging or burning images and models of President Obama in effigy?

Funny how the right to protest becomes a one-way street for those on the right. There’s no shortage of hypocrisy among them.

Teaching our children how to exercise their First Amendment rights, including allowing them the opportunity to practice it themselves, is a worthy educational goal.

You know, the Republicans always love to complain that progressives favor a “nanny-state,” when all the while they are constantly looking for ways to limit or eliminate rights for others. Seems like more than a little paternalistic and hypocritical to me.

  25. A little thing happens and y’all go nuts. The HS closest to me it was like during lunch, big whopping deal. In both cases it was a sliver of total school population. Sometimes you just have to let things go, sheesh.

AND really everybody (least in calif) is freaking out; the dude ain’t Prez until Jan 20th and so far he hasn’t done anything….yet… Give the dude a small chance before going bananas.

And for those who feel the school is jail, just what could school staff do; tackle the kids leaving? Oh then you would really have a cow…….

  26. You’re right Carol, there are a lot of parents that think they are above all and allow their children to leave school during school hours. Children need to get a doctor’s note to make it an excused absence, unless it is for an immediate family’s funeral. Are you allowing your children to break this rule?

The parents role is to teach their children how to respect all people and to respect our laws. Parents should teach children skipping school is wrong. Parents should teach their children to respect our democracy. How come the left keeps manipulating and exaggerating what is right and wrong?

  27. Wow more people commenting here supporting Guns and Hate. The biggest crime Trump committed here was kindling HATE. Know that there is something called Hate Crime. He did it in a massive way, and all his voters committed it as well in the name of democracy. Hate Crime against almost 50% of the US population is enormous than the crimes that may have been committed by the Clintons. What the kids did was freedom of expression and they are right in their own way. You could have protested 8 years ago as well when Obama was elected. Who stopped you ? And you all supported the biggest lie ‘WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION’ that drained billions of our dollars, killed and devastated millions of innocent lives abroad and also not to mention the loss of our own service men lives. And you all supported that President as well, and the driving force behind that was ‘Iraqis are enemies, and HATE them and kill them’. Your whole party’s philosophy is based on HATE. Note that the Republican party’s agenda is not about the common American like you and me, rather to help the top 1/10 % get their massive tax breaks and drain the economy – like Bernie mentioned. Historically we always had a recession whenever a Republican becomes president. Get out of that hate, you might have supported Johnson if you do not like the Clinton or liberals, but NOT the BUILD WALL BIGOT LIAR

  28. So right, Question!!! Let’s teach our children to follow our new leader’s examples on foul language, abuse of women, vengeance, and disrespect. Surely he could be a role model for them!!!

  29. Again there goes the left manipulating and exaggerating. The story is about children leaving school without permission.

To HelloGunsAndHate and Dave, it’s not worth debating with you if you thnk we had a better choice in Clinton.

  30. There is no need to exaggerate the numerous examples of Trump’s hate-speech. It is there on video from the campaign and before, plain for all to see.

  31. As a Senior Citizen and proud former protestor, I support and cheer for these students who will someday rule our country. Eleven of my many-times great grandfathers served in the Revolutionary War. One of them, who was Alexander Hamilton’s uncle was killed. One of my ancestors, Christopher Martin came on the Mayflower and two came to Jamestown on the ship that saved the others from starvation. I have grandkids in San Ramon Valley High Schools. I am teaching them the value of civil disobedience and the First Amendment.

If the founding fathers and mothers and many others had not protested and raised their voices we would still be ruled by England! I suggest that you ponder on what our country is all about, before ridiculing these students for doing something that many died for! Would you have hated on the Sons of Liberty or stopped the Tea Party, the real one!

  32. Hello Marie

You could have voted for Johnson or Jules Stein if you did not like Hillary. But I bet you did not – as you knowingly voted for the LIE the ‘BUILD the WALL’ – which symbolized hate

  33. The Principal of Milpitas High not only marched out of class with students during school but also used profanity while talking about Trump. Thank God he was suspended. The First Anendment has proper place and time requirements, and after school have a lawful and peaceful rally, I respect that. But having the actual Principal let students leave class and then Principal using profanity to rip Trump is indefensible & he should never be allowed to be in a position of authority over students again. If a Principal used profanity in ripping Obama he would be fired and face criminal hate crime charges and labeled a racist.

By the way 41% of California counties actually voted for Trump. The media won’t report this but it is true. You can go to the State of Ca Election results and look at each county results. Not bad for an alleged ” extremist” candidate. You won’t see people rioting or vandalizing property in those 41% of California counties, whether their candidate wins or lose. Respect for the law and our country and lawful elections is a great trait. Praying for peace, and end to violent riots, especially on Veterans Day.

  34. Kevin – Put your gun back in its holster, fool. Don’t be distorting the high school students’ peaceful protests with your fear-mongering.

  35. American: Dude, 61.5% of calif voted for Clinton that’s 5,589,936. About 2m+ more than Trump. AND Clinton won the popular nat’l vote.
However, it it makes you feel better that he won some counties in Calif, knock yourself out. Not for the electoral college we’d have a different Prez Elect.
Now if everybody could chill out until Jan 20th and at least give the new Prez a chance. So far, besides filling the swamp with his family and political insiders (which he said he wouldn’t do) he hasn’t done anything whacked…..yet….

  36. 2nd Posting. Folks there are many vicious comments. As a Veteran, I would like to suggest that we all remember that we are Americans first. Members of the greatest nation on this earth. We are brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, with a rich heritage hundreds of years old. We must not let what bothers us to effect what and who we are. Today is Veterans Day. Let’s give thanks to our military who serve us daily in various parts of the world. Let’s all remember their sacrifices and keep that in mind. What divides us is not as important as what binds us as Americans. We have a rich history…let’s keep it all in perpective. Be kind, understanding, and respectful 3toward each other. We need each other; brothers and sisters. We can and have weathered a Civil War and two World Wars plus other world conflicts, and we still are strong. Thank you fellow Vets for your service!

  37. Couldn’t the kids have protested “after” school?

Encouraging/allowing them to protest “during” school sets a bad precedent.

What protests are now allowed during school hours without a penalty and what ones aren’t?

  38. S Hale,

I was referring to the Cal High students who, according to this article, walked off campus at 1:20PM and most likely never returned.

If there are no consequences regarding their action then precedence has been set regarding other marches. Slippery slope if you ask me.

Administration had better give out some sort of punishment.

Not taking a position on their reasons just say’n…………

  39. Robert Shelton, thanks for your compelling and reasoned perspective amidst all the noise. And thanks for you service to this still-great country.

  40. To you high school students waving Rainbow flags and yelling Trump is anti-gay, he appointed Peter Thiel, an openly gay CEO from Silicon Valley to his inner circle of transition team members who will have the most power and say with his cabinet and appointments. High school kids, this is a great learning moment, of learning not to listen to the biased and anti-Republican mainstream media that will not report actual facts that show Trump in a favorable manner, as they will ignore those facts and label him negatively no matter what he factually does. The fact is an openly gay man got one of the only seats on the powerful transition team Trump appointed. The news last night simply reported another white millionaire was appointed, with no mention he is openly gay.

To those high school kids with signs saying Trump is a Nazi, the fact is he appointed several Jewish people to his inner transition team, including his son in law Jared Kushner and his daughter Ivanka who both are Jewish. The media wont report this, but it is a fact. I do not think a Nazi would appoint Jewish people to his inner circle team. By the way, your liberal teacher may not have accurately taught you who Nazi’s were, and I suggest you read historical books and talk to survivors of Nazi concentration camps before you label someone a Nazi.

To those high school kids with signs saying Trump is anti-female, 25% of his appointed transition team is made up of females. That is a fact the media wont report. In fact, the Trump Organization and his businesses have a much higher percentage of female executives than most businesses, and numerous females who have worked for him for years have publicly stated how he treats females much better than other companies and there is no glass ceiling with him as females repeatedly move up at his companies.

Being a high school kid is great because you have so much passion and excitement for things, but it is important you learn as early as possible that the mainstream media is not fair and balanced, and will not report things that make Republicans look good, and will ignore reporting facts that make Democrats look bad. So please, get your news from multiple sources, and start looking for facts, not subjective opinions or catchy labels that are not associated with facts. If you want to protest something, and march out of school, protest how the mainstream media is lying to you, and not accurately giving you the real facts, and using you for their own political causes. Have the courage not to simply go along with the in crowd at school that says Trump is anti-gay, or a Nazi, or anti-female, and ask them for facts, and call them on facts.

I have faith in you, high school students, as you are the next generation, but I worry that the Peter Cronkite’s and Edward R. Murrows that use to simply report the news accurately and fairly are gone, and you are stuck with biased liberal news reporters that are not giving you the facts. Stay informed, keep pushing for the facts, and call your teachers out if they do not accurately report the facts and if they unfairly try to force you to agree with their political views.

  41. American …..time for your nap.

Who is “Peter” Cronkite?? Is that your new name for Walter Cronkite?

Ah, they use to call it “forgetfulness.” Then it was “senility.” Now it’s “Alzheimers.”

  42. To you high school students:

“Dave” comment above is what you can expect from liberals when they have no factual content to talk about, they will simply resort to mean spirited, hateful personal attacks. He can not contest the fact that Trump appointed to his inner circle of the transition team that will have the most power and influence, an openly gay man, 25% females, and many people of the Jewish faith. Those are the facts. The first move he made as President-Elect was to appoint a very diverse team of people to lead our nation, showing he is not anti-gay, a Nazi, or anti-female.

By the way, “Dave”, I have lost both family members and friends to Alzheimer’s disease, and there is nothing funny about this disease and the painful process of seeing loved one’s lose their memory and faculties. But the real sickness is people like you who think somehow it is cute or funny to joke about it. To you high school students, unlike “Dave”, keep looking for the facts, and pray for people like Dave and his liberal, mean-spirited allies. The fact that the Republican party now controls the Presidency, the Senate, the House, and the overwhelming amount of Governorships and State Houses of Congress shows you that the American people are tired of mean-spirited liberals like “Dave” that ignore the facts and have such hatred in their hearts that they would joke about Alzheimer’s disease.

  43. Dear hugh school students
keep learning about and expressing your support of inclusiveness and tolerance and your expectation that our leaders should do the same. Don’t listen to conspiracy theorists who think the “mainstream media” don’t report the news accurately. What we see on the news is, unfortunately, the reality of life, viewpoints and behaviors. Change happens one cause at a time.

  44. To all HS Students:

Keep an open mind. don’t let extremist cause you to move off what you feel is right. Liberal this, conservative that. All comes from folks jaded by life. and don’t IGNORE the media, but do check many sources. After all media is the ONLY way to know something you didn’t witness yourself first hand.
And please don’t use this section as your only source as you will not have an accurate view of anything beyond opinions from anonymous, unregistered posters, many of which would never, ever say things they post here in 3d reality.

  45. Joshua – Watching the video moved me to tears. A 4 year old child forced to move out of his house by his evil mom since he voted for Trump in a fake election. Like most immigrants I was mostly Democrat but voted Trump in this election. The more of this weird stuff I watch, the more convinced I am that liberals are getting crazier day by day. Hope that mom spends a few years in jail. I wonder if many of these parents supporting their kids walking out from school would behave with their kids the same way if they ended up voting for Trump. Shameful.

  46. American – I was trying to be charitable and assume it was a medical reason, rather than just that you didn’t know Cronkite’s name.

Thiel is “openly gay” only because he was outed in a magazine article. I suspect that the gay community does not look to him as its representative. And his economic views are far from populist.

  47. Wow “Dave”, perhaps you don’t realize it but your lousy attitude is the prime example and the very reason that the liberal side took a big dump this election. Keep up the nasty remarks, it only solidifies the voting block that elected Trump. No one is ever swayed by insults and idiocy. And certainly not by you.

  48. So we had another free election like we do every four years for President. One side does not like the outcome so they now call half the country hateful racists.
So now they are protesting the fact that we actually are a republic and have a constitution. Wow! There can be no healing when you call half the country evil.
As a republican I have no voice in california and no representation but I do not protest and call the left hateful or mean. This is our system and I accept the results despite my disagreement at the state level.

  49. Yes, just out of the blue, those opposed to Trump are mentioning hateful comments and racism. Of course, Trump NEVER made any hateful comments or racist or sexist comments. NONE of this came out of his campaign. Right.

Do you Republicans seriously have such short memories or is it willful blindness?

I guarantee that if a Democrat had criticized Senator McCain’s war record, saying that they ” don’t really like someone who was captured,” or if they had attacked a Gold Star” family, we never would heard the end of outrage by Republicans. But, somehow Trump gets a free pass? Double standard, pure and simple. And a lack of principles.

    Not to mention very unpatriotic.

  50. To you High School students:

Your high school teachers may have “forgotten” to teach you certain facts about the Republican Party, and you certainly will not hear these facts from the mainstream media, especially from the Bay Area news channels, or from your college professors, but it is important that you know the facts about the Republican Party:

It was Republican President(Lincoln) that freed the slaves.

It was a Republican President(Teddy Roosevelt) who created the national parks organizations that allows us to enjoy hiking and the great outdoors and beautiful environment wonders in America.

It was a Republican President(Nixon) who signed the law allowing 18 year olds to vote in this country, instead of having to wait till they were 21. So when voting in your first election or elections, you can thank a Republican for allowing you that right.

It was a Republican President(Ford) who ended the Vietnam War.

It was a Republican President(Reagan) who appointed the first female ever to the United States Supreme Court.

It was a Republican President(Reagan)who succeeded in knocking down the Berlin Wall and creating freedom for millions of Germans and others in Europe.

It was a Republican President-Elect(Trump) who is the first President Elect ever in our nation’s history that had a woman in charge of running his successful campaign for President.

Those are facts about the Republican Party that you probably were not aware of, and probably surprise you, since you are growing up in the liberal Bay area and most public school teachers and media probably do not mention those facts.

So if your fellow students, or your teachers, are labeling Republicans as evil racist who are anti-female, anti-young people, anti-environment, and war mongers, who now have the facts to prove them wrong. If you choose to become a Republican, you are joining a party that has done so much good for our nation, and will continue to do so much good in the future. It is truly a Grand Old Party.

  51. To HS Students

When you when go to register (or online) in Calif ‘Decline To State’ is what you select if you think both ‘mainstream’ political parties hurl. Certainly both candidates for Prez this year are not poster quality, let’s clap our hands together.

also, when you are DTS you get to throw rocks at both parties……well, at least point out their mistakes. Neither is perfect. And don’ buy the ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ mumbo jumbo a few throw around. Middle of the road is a safe place to be…….

  52. @ Dave

Yes, Trump has said some things I disagree with for sure. HRC has done some things that are far worse in my opinion as so has her husband. If you want to label half of your fellow countrymen racist hateful people you are of course free to do so but I fail to see how this will promote a productive discussion.

Illegal immigration is a very legitamate concern and the DNC is tone deaf to most the country here and never mind we actually have a federal law on the books.

  53. I too am an immigrant and disapprove of the school protests. I am not sending my kids to school so the teachers can brainwash them into protests. As Asians, we suffer enough from the racist policies of the Dems in limiting Asians and Whites to college admissions.
It is inherently wrong that students with higher API get rejected from top California schools so Blacks and Latinos with lower grades can get in. This is RACIAL discrimination and done solely to get Black and Latino votes.

  54. Dave – are you a freeloading liberal litterbag? You seem to have too much time on your hands making crazy posts by intentionally misreading other posts.

  55. No, Kevin, I’m a one-percenter who has worked hard to get where I am, but also believes that equal rights and justice for all people is important in this country. In fact, it is the essence of this country. I’ll ignore your insult.

Today’s Republican Party bears no resemblance to the one that fought for civil rights years ago — not since the Dixiecrats took it over and Nixon exploited racist divisions to win in ’68 with his “Southern Strategy.”

Tom – President Obama has deported more undocumented immigrants than any other president. Let’s stay with the facts.

  56. I would invite all to read the sage words of Robert Sheldon on this post. Thank you Sir for your wisdom and wise comments in this time of transition.
I do not have the link for the interview however I suggest those interested google Poppy Harlow’s interview with Warren Buffet after the election. Let’s all get back to work as an unbeatable American team folks, at least that is my sentiment. Who is with me ?

  57. American: It is a also a Republican who just appointed Steve Bannon as his Chief Strategist.

Stephen Kevin “Steve” Bannon is an American businessman and media executive. He is the executive chairman of Breitbart News, a politically conservative American news, opinion and commentary website noted for its connection to the alt-right. Bannon will be Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor of the upcoming Trump Administration

Bannon is a proponent of Nationalism and the alt-right. Refer to following link:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt-right

How do you explain Bannon’s appointment?

  58. American –

The Republican party that Lincoln represented is not the party in the last 100 years or so. It was the trickle down economics theory of Hoover, Coolidge etc. that led to the Great Depression. Followed by Reagan who increased the deficit multifold, then followed by George Bush Sr. and George W Bush leading to almost the Great Recession in 2008. During Bill Clinton’s presidency he improved the economy and jobs while increasing the taxes on the rich. This is a living proof. Also note that Peter Thiel is being given prominence not because he is gay, rather he is a rich CEO who helped raise money from Trump’s campaign ( of course for some favor in return). Trump has clearly stated that his supreme court judge appointee will be somebody like Scalia, who was the most conservative anti gay judge etc.

Nixon stopped the Vietnam war as he had no choice and public pressure was mounting. What about Obama who captured the real enemy Osama bin Laden and also stopped the two recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq ?

Also it was President Johnson who enacted the Voting Rights Act in the 1960’s .

The kids learn all of these in the schools and they are intelligent enough to get the facts ( proof is the SRVUSD school ratings). They dont need your skewed and twisted pro Republican views

  59. Ram Akella

Democracy as established/envisioned by our forefathers is about the votes or people. In California there are more Latinos etc. and certainly a set of politicians are favoring them. I bet you are a Tech professional or some sort in the moderatly high income bracket and complaining about some state colleges/universities propsing to offer more seats to the other minorities whose average income is much less than your’s. You have two options. 1. Since your income is way too high you can send your kids to some private school. 2. You can move to a state like Misssissippi, to really get to know what RACISM means.

Would also like to point out that Bernie Sanders was campaigning for free college education for all. Did you like this liberal democrat or some body like Trump who scammed people with his Trump University? Think Broad my fellow Indian.

  60. WellSaidDottie –

    >and complaining about some state colleges/universities propsing to offer more seats to the other minorities whose average income is much less than your’s.

Sigh. Affirmative action is banned in California and was upheld by the Supreme Court. Still, California schools have quotes based on races. Lower income simply means you have better changes of getting financial aid. But, school admissions still limit students based on their race (read it again, based on RACE). This means a poor Asian or white student with higher grades than a much richer black or Latino student would still be rejected in favor of the black or Latino student. This is RACISM, whichever way you look at it.

    >You have two options. 1. Since your income is way too high you can send your kids to
    >some private school. 2. You can move to a state like Misssissippi, to really get to >know what RACISM means.
Wrong. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because there is RACISM in Mississippi does’nt mean there has to be reverse RACISM in California. Your problem is you refuse to see that racism exists in the other direction as well and it is happening right in front of your eyes.

Are you even aware of SCA5, the racist bill that Dems tried to pass in 2014? This would have made affirmative action legal again in California.
It got rejected because Asians (mostly Chinese) along with Indians and whites threatened lawmakers they would vote Republican if the bill passed. It is the threat of votes that made the Dem lawmakers reject that bill. Being better educated about local issues would really help you.

  61. @ Dave.

Mr. Obama supports sanctuary cities. Mr. Obama supports dreamers. We have a large population of Illegal immigrants. The D party does not think we should be allowed to even use the term.

  62. To the post-election protesters: Your civil rights have not been violated because your candidate did not win. This process happens every 4 years, after which there is a peaceful transition of power. While you have a Constitutional right to free speech, these protests have far exceeded what qualifies as free speech…destruction, death threats, beatings, etc.
Discounting the paid agitators, your crowd looks like a mix of adults and “students”…a dark representation of the circle of life. The 1960’s counterculture became the adult culture became the culture became the 1960’s counterculture on steroids. The Bill Ayers’ and the Bernadette Dorns are back.
Oh, wait, they’ve been here all along, friends of the current administration
and advocating the same Marxist ideology.
For those of you who are proudly seen carrying around the Communist flag, while burning ours, Communism is neither exciting nor glamorous. Your ignorance of what real life Communism means is deeply troubling. This system has been tried time and again, and has never achieved the utopia it espouses. Please be challenged to educate yourselves on the realities of life under such a governmental system. Find out what the Communist poster boys like Mao and Stalin and Lenin actually did to their people. They have killed millions of their own citizens in the name of Communism. To be more current, maybe you should take a field trip to North Korea.
But you probably won’t take the time or effort to do any research, because it’s much easier to have a temper tantrum and whine about your “bleak future”. You claim President-elect Trump is going to destroy America, while you actually go out and try to destroy America.
If you are so intransigent that you cannot accept the results of this election, feel free to leave this country to the people who respect and love it. Maybe you can go with all those people who said they would move to Canada. But you better go soon if you are going on foot because winter is almost here. Take lots of cash because the Canadian immigration process is long and expensive and if you get through it you may not find work. Meanwhile, you will not be allowed to vote if you are not a citizen and will have no immunity if you commit a felony. And FYI,rumor has it the Canadians don’t want you and are considering building a wall on their southern border. Oh, well there’s always North Korea.

  63. Mo – Trying to label protesters as un-American is an old trick. They are more patriotic than you because they actually care about the fate of the Republic.

  64. I think it is ignorant to be saying “not my president”. If you don’t want him to be your president, then leave the country. It has been reported that the majority of protesters throughout the country didn’t even vote. As mentioned above, the right never protested Obama because we never wanted to infringe on other people’s rights and because we respect our democratic process. Stopping traffic, yelling, cursing, beating people up, vandalizing, rioting, are characteristics of the left and/or liberals.

  65. Don’t you all love the vague “it has been reported” language by Danville Mom. What she means is on Breitbart. She’s just too embarrassed to tell you that it wasn’t a reputable news source. Or she is trying to mislead you.

And even then, what they reported was that a majority of the few vandals who were arrested in one city (Portland) supposedly did not vote — not a majority of all of the thousands of protesters.

Welcome to the post-fact world of the right wing.

  66. Dave: nice to know you think you know better, but I don’t know what Breitbart is; I’ve heard of it, but don’t know if it is a TV show, radio show, or some other media. I get my news from many different sources; and a few of them said the majority of protesters did not vote. I am not trying to mislead anyone. My point was that rioting, beating people up, vandalizing, yelling at people and cursing, stopping traffic is something we do not see from the Republican Party.

  67. So much about Trump’s temper. If the article below is true, Hillary
    is downright crazy.

    http://www.northcrane.com/2016/11/15/cnn-reporter-states-hillary-became-physically-violent-towards-john-podesta-at-midnight-had-to-be-restrained/

    Article posted below.

On election night, Hillary was straight up “Hitler-in-the-bunker”.
The few honest MSM reporters have been reduced to leaking info to new media people because their corporate bosses won’t let them report it.A friend at CNN says Clintonland reports Hillary was in a “psychotic, drunken rage” election night; needed hardcore meds to speak Wednesday.CNN reporter tells me Hillary became physically violent towards Robby Mook and John Podesta around midnight; had to be briefly restrained. Hillary on election night was straight-up Hitler-in-the-bunker shit. It even included psychotic screaming about “the Russians.” The doctor helped restrain Hillary when she violently attacked Mook and Podesta at midnight. Gave sedatives, then amphetamines next morning. CNN reporter says Hillary needed so many amphetamines Wed morning she had unexpected nosebleeds all day. Fear was she’d bleed at concession.

In the waning days of the presidential campaign, Bill and Hillary Clinton had a knock-down, drag-out fight about her effort to blame FBI Director James Comey for her slump in the polls and looming danger of defeat.
‘I was with Bill in Little Rock when he had this shouting match with Hillary on the phone and she accused Comey for reviving the investigation into her use of a private email server and reversing her campaign’s momentum,’ said one of Bill Clinton’s closest advisers.
‘Bill didn’t buy the excuse that Comey would cost Hillary the election,’ said the source. ‘As far as he was concerned, all the blame belonged to [campaign manager Robby] Mook, [campaign chairman John] Podesta and Hillary because they displayed a tone-deaf attitude about the feeble economy and its impact on millions and millions of working-class voters.

‘Bill was so red in the face during his conversation with Hillary that I worried he was going to have a heart attack. He got so angry that he threw his phone off the roof of his penthouse apartment and toward the Arkansas River.’
Bill has a luxurious penthouse apartment with an outdoor garden at the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock.

  68. High school kids, many of non voting age, having been taught by parents and teachers to respect one another, are outraged that their next President will be someone who denigrates women and minorities, and a Vice President who believes in gay conversion therapy.

They exercise their first amendment right to peacefully protest.

Grown adults from the winning side, hiding behind their computer screens, attack and insult them for exercising their constitutional rights, re-litigate campaign soundbites and engage in strawman arguments.

Scientists recently discovered it takes until the age of 25 for the human brain to completely mature. The kids have an excuse. You don’t.
