Contra Costa County Public Works has begun work on a new bikeway path on Blackhawk Road.
Construction, which began Monday, will consist of striping class 2 and 3 bicycle lanes for the approximately four miles along Blackhawk Road between Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard and Camino Tassajara. Work is expected to be completed by June 8, but commuters along the road should expect delays before then.
Public Works received the lowest bid from VSS International Inc., who have budgeted the project at $268,000.
Class 2 bicycle lanes, which provide a one-way striped lane exclusively for bikes, will stretch for 3.3 miles on Blackhawk Road between San Andreas Drive and Blackhawk Plaza Circle. The remainder of the route from Andreas Drive to Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard, and from Blackhawk Plaza Circle to Camino Tassajara, will consist of class 3 lanes that share the road with motor vehicle traffic.
Work will include surface preparation, tree trimming, striping removal, placement of new thermoplastic striping and pavement markings. Additionally, a slurry seal treatment will be applied between Blackhawk Drive and Camino Tassajara during the week of May 21, weather permitting.
The project is being funded by gas tax revenues provided by the SB1 Road Repair and Accountability Act, the California gas tax passed in 2017. SB1 may be repealed if voters choose to reject proposition 69 in the coming June primary.
That’s great. However, for the safety of all, it is essential that a safe bike path be installed between Green Valley and Mt. Diablo Scenic.
I totally agree with Arlene! Danville Town Council needs to step up and build safe bicycle lanes along narrow, substandard, winding Diablo Road between Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd. and Green Valley Road. Unless and until that happens, the Council must not approve the Magee Ranches 69+ home development, which will add nearly 1000 more cartrips to that dangerous corridor, and will make dangerous condition even more dangerous.
