The Valero gas station site in downtown Danville may be receiving a major makeover in the future, after developers have requested that the town allow them to construct a two-story mixed-use building on the property, an issue the Danville Planning Commission is set to discuss during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

Located on the northwest corner of the Diablo Road and Front Street intersection, the new 10,600-square-foot building would include retail space on the ground floor and office space on the second, as well as two second-story residential units — a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom unit.

“It is noteworthy that removal of the existing service station use, which utilizes an extensive amount of the property frontage for project driveways, would lead to the creation of approximately five additional on-street public parking spaces along the Diablo Road frontage,” assistant planner Brianne Reyes pointed out in a staff report.

Reyes added that due to the project’s close proximity to “known tribal remain sites,” staff recommended a condition of approval for the project being the developer conduct a “Phase I Inventory of Cultural Resources,” which would need to be reviewed by the town’s planning division.

The Danville Planning Commission is scheduled to hold its regular meeting Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Meeting Hall, 201 Front St.

The Planning Commission is also set to consider allowing the conversion of a residential home in south Danville to operate as a preschool with a capacity for 48 children and accompanying staff.

Located several blocks west from Greenbrook Elementary School on 1896 Camino Ramon, according to town staff the proposed project would entail the removal of an existing garage to accommodate an office and kitchen; the addition of a children’s restroom; a 280-square-foot deck at the rear of the existing structure; 10 on-site parking spaces; and an outdoor play area in the rear yard area

The new preschool would also require extensive remodeling of the existing building to create four classroom areas.

In a staff report, Reyes said traffic conditions resulting from the protect are projected to “generate 196 total weekday trips, including 37 morning peak hour trips (20 inbound, 17 outbound), 38 school peak hour trips (19 inbound, 19 outbound), and 38 evening peak hour trips (18 inbound and 20 outbound).

The facility would operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

  1. I agree with JJ ~ Danville’s charm comes from its quaint small town feel ~ it’s a gradual slide into Walnut Creek city feel ~ please keep our town small safe and connected!

  2. More retail space!
Has anyone checked out how much empty retail space there is in Danville already.
I also agree “another 2 story building.
Aren’t there plans for a 2 story building across from Pete’s Car Wash restaurant?
