In an effort to make San Ramon a safer and more bike-friendly city, city officials have begun installing new dashed green bicycle safety lanes to highlight “conflict areas” where motorists and cyclists often share use of the road.

Work has already begun with green lanes set to be installed along San Ramon Valley Boulevard, from Crow Canyon Road to Bollinger Canyon Road, and along Norris Canyon Road.

“These bicycle safety lanes are the next step in moving forward with the city’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure for cyclists, following the adoption of the Bicycle Master Plan,” San Ramon’s transportation division manager, Lisa Bobadilla, said in a statement. “These lanes provide a safety enhancement for motorists and cyclists alike.”

Unlike solid green bike lanes and dashed zones (which are portions of the roadway dedicated for cyclists), dashed green lanes will be used to identify area where bicycles and vehicles often cross paths — the goal being to bring greater visibility to places where the road is shared.

City officials say the new infrastructure is a part of San Ramon’s first Citywide Bicycle Master Plan, which was adopted by the city in April 2018 in order to promote bicycle safety and access, as well as to encourage residents to bicycle throughout the city.

More information on San Ramon’s new bicycle safety infrastructure and the Citywide Bicycle Master Plan can be found on the city’s website www.sanramon.ca.gov.

  1. If city officials want to see how proper green bike markings should be installed look at what Dublin and Danville did. The San Ramon raised green markings are bumpy and can lead a cyclist to lose control with the raised abruptness. San Ramon continues to be way behind in bicycle safety compared to every other town in the tri-Valley. Please consider soliciting advice from bicyclists and please consider spending the money to do the job correctly.. Sidewalk sharing is NOT a safe and viable bicycle pathway.
