Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton has announced that she is seeking re-election to a second full term as the county’s top prosecutor.
First elected in 2018 after serving as interim DA for a year, Becton said during her tenure that she has set an agenda that prioritizes transparency and accountability among law officers throughout the county.
“While the past year has been tumultuous for so many of us, the work to reform and strengthen the justice system does not stop. We need a criminal justice system that can respond to the challenges of our time and remain a strong foundation of democracy for the future,” Becton said in a re-election campaign statement.
“This is the work you elected me to do. Over the coming weeks, I hope to share more with you about that work. I have made changes in how my office approaches youth justice, victim services, nonviolent crimes and so much more. It is not always easy or as fast as I would like, but important work is getting done. You deserve to know about all of it,” she added.
In addition to being the first woman and the first African-American person elected as district attorney in the history of Contra Costa County, Becton served as a Contra Costa County Superior Court judge before the Board of Supervisors appointed her as interim DA to fill a vacancy.
Prioritizing policies that support the county’s more vulnerable residents, Becton said she has overseen the establishment of the office’s first Human Trafficking Unit, initiatives that eliminated the county’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits, created the first stand-alone Conviction Integrity Unit and dismissed thousands of old marijuana convictions.
Becton also made county history by bringing charges against Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Hall for the fatal shooting of a man in 2018 — the first time in county history that the DA’s office has filed criminal charges against a police officer for their actions during an on-duty shooting.
Prior to being sworn in as Contra Costa County’s 24th district attorney, Becton was in retirement after having served for 22 years as a county judge, where she was also selected to serve as presiding judge.
“First and foremost, my job is to keep our community safe. This requires focusing the resources of the District Attorney’s Office on prosecuting serious crimes. It requires exploring opportunities with the potential to reduce future crime by helping individuals become healthy and productive members of our community. It requires an unwavering commitment to the integrity of our work to provide justice for victims of crime,” Becton said.
“Change is hard, but it is necessary to serve and protect our community,” she added.
As of Friday, no challenger has announced their intention to campaign against Becton.
Please literally anybody run against this incredibly incompetent DA! She never worked in law enforcement or practiced criminal law, and while a Judge she was routinely challenged via 170.6 for her extreme bias. She was caught and admitted plagiarizing her application for DA, and since becoming DA has been sued by four longtime prosecutors for sexual discrimination against females in the office. She is using this important office for her own political gain, and has a vote of no confidence from law enforcement officers as she is soft on crime, anti-crime victims, and pro-criminal. She has no business being DA, and her policies are causing big increases in crime in our county, and will only get worse if she is re-elected. Please elect literally anyone else, before she turns our neighborhoods into crime infested parts of Oakland and San Francisco.
How about no? Bozo the Clown is better qualified. She never should have been elected. She is an embarrassment and an utter failure.
Soft on crime. She has an overall agenda that seems to be a better fit in Alameda County. Its not a good fit for Contra Costa. She totally lacks integrity and the qualifications for the job.
Soft on crime is to the detriment of society. She coddles criminals, and she needs to go.
As reported by Bloomberglaw.com, on May 21, 2021, Federal Judge Spero ruled in favor of 5 female District Attorneys who work for Becton, that their lawsuit may continue against Becton, who is accused of systemically demoting and failing to promote and discriminating against older female attorneys in her office. Becton is not only soft on crime, anti-crime victims, but also is accused of discriminating against older female attorneys who work for her.
How can anyone vote for Becton, who was caught plagiarizing her application for DA, is now being sued for discrimination against older female attorneys in her office, and is soft on crime, and anti-crime victims, and has a vote of no confidence from law enforcement?
After the oust of DA Peterson, I was very interested in the candidates, so I went to the public interview by the Board of Supervisors about the appointment of a new DA. There were four candidates and after the comments I ranked her in a tie with another candidate as to who gave the worst interview. I was in total shock when she was appointed. ADA Paul Graves gave by far the best interview. Becton demoted him as soon as she took office.
The entire Contra Costa District Attorneys office needs to go. They do nothing for victims of domestic violence, including doing anything to stop someone from repeatedly breaking restraining orders. We need a clean sweep! Goes for the judges too who are soft on domestic violence.
