For its first show of the spring, Danville’s own acting troupe, the Role Players Ensemble, is bringing the penny dreadful-styled theatrical satire “The Mystery of Irma Vep” to downtown Danville — featuring an all-female cast.
“The Mystery of Irma Vep” by Charles Ludlam, features two actors playing 14 different roles — some living, some dead, some undead — and a mashup of all things that go bump in the night.
“What do Victorian melodramas, lurid dime store novels, ‘Wuthering Heights,’ Alfred Hitchcock and hysterically funny comedy have in common? Well, sprinkle in some vampires, werewolves and mummies and you have ‘The Mystery of Irma Vep,’” Role Players’ marketing director Martin J. Silverman wrote in a statement.
‘Irma Vep’ will occasionally make jokes that are adult in nature, but generally is suitable for audiences of all ages.
The Role Players’ first show of the spring stars Alicia von Kugelgen and Dana Lewenthal. It also features the talents of Jane Corich (costumes assistant), Lisa Danz (costumes and properties), Zanahary Vida Leila (sound designer) and Charles Woodson Parker (dialect coach).
“The Mystery of Irma Vep” opens 8 p.m. this Friday, at the Village Theatre, 233 Front St. in downtown Danville, and it is scheduled to run through April 28. Tickets range in price from $20-$35, and can be purchased online, via phone 314-3400, or in-person at the Danville Community Center, 420 Front St., one hour before the curtain goes up.
