San Ramon police are investigating after a third-grade boy at Twin Creeks Elementary brought a firearm to school on Tuesday, according to police and school officials.
Police confirmed the 8-year-old student has been temporarily suspended from school. The weapon was never fired, brandished or used to threaten another student, according to officials.
The investigation began on Wednesday when San Ramon Valley school district officials contacted police immediately after receiving a report about a student seeing a peer with a gun at school the day before, officials said.
It was Tuesday evening when the Twin Creeks student told his parents that he saw a gun in a fellow student’s backpack earlier in the day on campus, according to San Ramon police Lt. Cary Goldberg. The boy had the gun in his backpack and showed it to the classmate, according to a letter sent out by school officials.
After the parents told school administrators and police were contacted, San Ramon police officers went to the San Ramon home of the third-grader in question and contacted him and his parents, Goldberg said.
In the boy’s backpack, they found a gun loaded with a magazine containing 9mm ammunition, Goldberg said.
Police did not reveal details about how the boy obtained the gun or why he brought it to school, but Goldberg noted that no other firearms were found in the home.
“The investigation is still ongoing and more details will be released at the conclusion of the investigation,” the lieutenant said, noting the boy was temporarily suspended but not revealing whether his parents will face charges because of their son accessing the gun.
School district spokeswoman Elizabeth Graswich, in a statement sent out to parents and staff Wednesday, lauded the quick reporting by the classmate and the parent.
“The student will face appropriate disciplinary action,” Graswich said. “Please know that the safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority.”
“Please take some time to remind your student that weapons, of any kind, are strictly prohibited on our campus,” she added. “Please help us share the message that ‘if you see something, or know something, say something.'”
Goldberg took the opportunity to remind all parents to speak with their children about gun safety and the need to report suspicious activities to authorities as soon as possible.
“Also, firearms safety applies to everybody,” Goldberg added. “Failing to properly store a firearm that is accessible to a child is a criminal offense.”

The Twin Creeks incident is one of several cases in recent days in which a Bay Area student reportedly brought a gun to school.
In Pleasanton, a Village High School student was arrested after police allegedly found them in possession of a loaded handgun on-campus Monday morning. And in Menlo Park, a 13-year-old student at Willow Oaks Elementary School (K-8) was arrested early Monday afternoon after police allegedly found him off-campus with an unloaded, concealed gun that he later admitted to having while on campus too.

The student will face appropriate disciplinary action? How about the parents? How in the world could a 3rd grader have access to a loaded gun? How in the world is a 3rd grader able to comprehend what a loaded gun can do?
I hope the parents are arrested and face child endangerment charges. While I don’t own a gun, I definitely believe in our 2nd amendment rights. But not locking up a weapon in a safe when a child is in the house, is criminal.
I’m not sure what the law is in a case like this but I hope these parents are never allowed to own another firearm. We’re once again reminded that idiots and guns don’t mix. This poor kid is being raised by completely irresponsible adults.
Let us not be too quick to condemn the parents. The child might have found the gun on the way to or from school and the parents did nothing wrong. If on the other hand this was a gun owned by the parents, they are in deep trouble. California law requires guns be locked in a gun safe or other locking container anytime a child under the age of 18 lives in the house. Let’s wait until all the facts are in before starting the lynching. Let us all be thankful the other student saw something he or she knew was wrong and reported it. It could have ended much worse without the student coming forward.

A very tempered and reasonable response… let’s see what is really going on. Fortunately no one was hurt, the situation could have been much worse and let’s not make it worse after the fact.
I think a reasonable law would be if you own guns and have minors in the house a gun safe is required. BUT, the NRA will have a Trump type tantrum, so won’t happen. Oh well.
Just a guess, but I’m thinking this kid didn’t have any real experience with that handgun….
Let’s say that the child obtained that handgun from his parent’s drawer in their room or gun storage. This is a bad situation for all involved, the kids, school, community and the parents. But this brings me to a point that I think all gun owners should practice.
There is a fantasy with firearms that exists with many children, they think it’s cool, powerful etc. etc, which brings me to my point. The fantasy of guns just didn’t exist with me back then, I didn’t have the need to show them off to friends, play around with them or handle them outside of actually using them with dad. Why you ask? At a very young age my father introduced me to firearms through hunting, sport shooting, gunsmithing and reloading. This had not only taught me the proper handling and use of firearms, but also did something that I didn’t realize was happening back then. My thought here is, if you’re a gun owner, keep your family involved and start them young. Keep those firearms that you’re not intending to use locked up and take reasonable steps to safeguard the one you intend to make available for your protection. Not everyone will agree with me on this, but you might let those people that frequent your home whom have kids know you are a gun owner and if possible invite them for the experience teach their kids about it as well. If not, then keep your mouth closed and keep your stuff LOCKED UP.
Teaching children the real power and responsibility of these tools is most valuable and may help avoid such situations like this in the future.

The Democrats have a super majority so from a state law standpoint the R party has no say in this at all. Now go back to your state employee union rally and demand more taxpayer money.
24 year Danville resident, putting 5 kids thru our great school system. There are very specific laws. And there are very specific behaviors ALL adults SHOULD be teaching their children, whether they own a firearm or not. Behaviors our District COULD have been teaching our children. Unfortunately, our school district would rather turn a blind eye to any issue involving firearms, than take responsible actions. I know, because I made such suggestions back when my kids were in school, and a similar situation occurred. The school district took extraordinary draconian actions, of course over reacting to the whole incident. Despite the general belief of the “public”, the NRA’s simple rules that could have easily been taught to our districts children could have “helped” prevent this occurrence. If the parents were negligent, they should face the appropriate actions. Lets find out what REALLY happened. But of course it’s probably Trump’s fault.

So the kid not only had access to the gun, but to the magazine as well. It seems to me that compounds the danger immensely. Whether it will compound the consequences remains to be seen.

In this case even if there WAS a federal law (ah, loon that would be Federal level, not state) to have a gun safe seems ‘this’ dad wouldn’t have had one anyway since he seems to have woes with the law already and kinda explains how a child had access to a loaded gun.
