A driver was killed after their SUV was rear-ended by a meat truck on Interstate 680 in Fremont, snarling the morning commute coming south from the Tri-Valley on Thursday, according to authorities.

The collision, which involved five vehicles in all, unfolded just after 7 a.m. Thursday (July 18) on southbound I-680 at Auto Mall Parkway, according to Officer Tyler Hahn of the California Highway Patrol.

A big-rig hauling a load of meat on the freeway hit the back of a Toyota Venza and then collided out-of-control with three other vehicles before going down the embankment on the right shoulder, according to Hahn.

The Toyota’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Hahn said. Two other people sustained minor injuries and were taken to Fremont-area hospitals for treatment.

The circumstances of the fatal crash remain under investigation. At this point, officers do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors, according to Hahn. Anyone who has information related to the collision can contact CHP’s Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
