The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s Board of Education is set to consider proposed changes to its board policies and administrative regulations in order to conform with a new state law requiring ethnic studies courses in public high schools.

The proposed revisions are set to switch the existing semester-long world geography and culture course required in 9th through 12th grades with an introduction to ethnic studies course starting in the 2025-26 academic year.

The shift in classes and requirements as proposed would not impact incoming students in the current school year set to begin this week, with the world geography and cultures class continuing to be required for students graduating next year. For students graduating through 2028, the current class would continue to fulfill graduation requirements.

“The decision to replace World Geography with Ethnic Studies was made with input from both the Board and the community,” Christine Huajardo, assistant superintendent of educational services wrote in a staff report prepared for the upcoming meeting.

This included a “comprehensive board workshop” on Nov. 6, 2023, she added.

“The workshop provided a platform for in-depth discussions and evaluations,” Huajardo wrote. “Following the workshop, we actively sought and received feedback from the community, ensuring that their perspectives and concerns were integral to the decision-making process.”

The board is set to vote on the proposed changes at their next regular meeting on Tuesday (August 13) at 6 p.m. The agenda is available here.
