Community chorus concert
The City of San Ramon’s community chorus is hosting their annual holiday concert this weekend.
“The San Ramon Community Chorus has been delighting the community with song for over 40 years,” organizers said in the event description. “Join them once more for a night of fun entertainment for the whole family as they perform their seasonal concert. They will sing familiar favorites across the decades for your listening pleasure.”
The free event is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 15) at the Dougherty Station Community Arts Center at 17011 Bollinger Canyon Road.
Planning Commission vacancy
The city of San Ramon is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the city’s planning commission following the departure of S. Ashar Ahmed who was appointed last year to carry out the remainder of former commissioner Rick Marks’ term through 2027.
Ahmed’s successor will carry out the remaining time of Marks’ term that Ahmed had initially been appointed to fill.
The Planning Commission serves as an advisory body to the City Council on land use, growth, development, and the implementation of the city’s General Plan. Regular meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month.

Solve for Tomorrow finalists
Three teachers and their student teams in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District have been named state finalists in Samsung’s national Solve for Tomorrow competition, which encourages students in sixth through 12th grades to develop STEM-based solutions to local community issues that they identify.
“What a remarkable achievement by these three teachers and their student teams,” SRVUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack said in announcement from the district on Tuesday. “I am incredibly proud of our educators for continually seeking opportunities that challenge students to think critically and apply their knowledge in ways that promote meaningful solutions.”
The three teams proceeding to the state finals are led by Cal High teacher Rae Anne Crandall and Dougherty Valley teachers Katherine Huang and Yin Lau. Their placement in the finals mean that all three teams have already secured $2,500 each in technology and classroom resources from Samsung.
“I hope that the students learn how to collaborate within a large, diverse team, learn to approach challenges with empathy, and discover how to apply current technologies in novel ways to address real-world problems,” Crandall said in the district’s announcement this week.
The teams that win the state finals are set to receive an additional $12,000 in products and resources from Samsung, with the winners set to be announced in late January.
A Holiday Soiree
Livermore-based SPARC Theater is presenting script-in-hand readings of stories of the season including “The Fir-Tree” by Hans Christian Andersen this weekend in its hometown and in San Ramon.
Part of its ongoing Get Out of the House reading series, the Holiday Soiree shows feature professional actors in costume and under the direction of Mary Ann Rodgers performing in a style “between a full show and story time”, organizers said. There will be a do-it-yourself hot cocoa bar, an assortment of sweet treats and a group sing-along.
Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. this Sunday at the SPARC Studio on Railroad Avenue in Livermore and at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Front Row Theater on Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon.

DUI checkpoints
Dublin police are conducting a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint next Friday night at an undisclosed location in the city, followed by an evening of increased patrols to catch impaired motorists next Saturday.
Funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the checkpoint and patrols will operate in areas of Dublin with a history of DUI-related collisions and arrests, according to Dublin Police Services Capt. Miguel Campos.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Campos said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
The DUI checkpoint is set for 7 p.m. next Friday (Dec. 20) until 3 a.m. the next morning. The extra DUI patrols will be out from 6 p.m. next Saturday (Dec. 21) until 2 a.m. the next morning.
