Cancel any restaurant reservations you may have or postpone your weekly movie night because the 22nd annual National Night Out has been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 2.
National Night Out is a campaign to involve residents, law enforcement agencies, businesses, civic groups, neighborhood organizations and local agencies in an attempt to create better awareness for crime and drug prevention. Also on the agenda is participation in local anti-crime programs. National Night Out strengthens the bond between the community and the Police Department as well as generates positive neighborhood spirit.
This unique crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. National Night Out sends a message to criminals and potential delinquents letting them know that neighborhoods in their area are organized and fighting back against crime and drugs.
The National Night Out campaign was a huge success in 2004. Over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide joined together at block parties, cookouts, flashlight walks, parades, exhibits and youth programs. More than 34 million people participated in the National Night Out campaign last year.
In 2005, Danville police officers will visit registered National Night Out events. Officers will answer questions, distribute crime prevention information, and hand out treats to the kids.
If gathering with neighborhood friends for a block party Tuesday to prevent crime sounds like a fun way to spend the evening, visit www.nationalnightout.org to register your event and receive your Organizational Kit. If your block party would not be complete without a visit from a police officer, contact Claudia Ray of the Danville Police Department at 314-3322.
